How about the demonic connotation the having an "open mind" has? I told my mother in law recently that I thought of myself as being open minded and I thought the poor woman was going to have a stroke!!! If witnesses carried holy water, I would have been covered in it. She was completely freaked out!

Is the need to be in a religion a personality trait....................
by BLISSISIGNORANCE inlike the idea that alcoholics have a particular gene, certain mannerisms we inherit from parents or grand-parents, red hair is a recessive gene etc.
is religion inherited as a life style or emotional dependency?????????????????
is it low self-esteem and the need for others to decide what is right and wrong, how to live and even die???????.

I have to agree with most of what Rebellious said but, I do think that people generally fall into two categories: 1) Loners 2) Joiners. While most "Loners" can deal socially but, prefer to be alone or with a limited number, "Joiners "don't do very well unless surrounded by a crowd. These are the same people who before ending one relationship, are jumping into another. I think they are confusing being alone with being lonely.

Refusing magazines/books from JW relatives
by JustTickledPink inrecently my mother dropped in on us and in front of other people, very nicely handed me some trinkets aka dust collectors for my house and some wts magazines.
the way she handed everything to me at once i just held out my hands and took it all.. i threw the magazines away immediately, i consider them trash and don't even want them around... but then decided exactly what i was going to do.
i am going to buy a yard sale cross or virgin mary statue and give it to my mom.. i specifically told her i don't want any publications and she slipped them in anyways.... so, on that note, she hates any religious icons, i am going to give her something that she doesn't want.

Having a hard time leaving? Here's what worked for me:
by marked inmoving.. move away from the situation, if at all possible.
have a job offer in another state/province/country?
need to go to school elsewhere?
-

Moving absolutely does help but, if you have JW family all of your best efforts won't keep the local cong. at bay. We moved and my brother in law phoned the local congregation and sent them to my house!!!! Because of that phone call we also discovered that the neighbors across the street were JWs. Goodbye anonymity!!!!!

I'm from Spokane originally but moved to the Everett area. I'm not a bitter exJW but, I do have some issues that will most likely haunt me for the rest of my life. I can't describe the sense of peace that I've gained simply by not attending meetings! About half of my family is still associated with the JWs and I've made it clear to them that I think sincere love and concern is missing from the org. How can they argue with that? At first they all wanted to say that someone must have stumbled me------I find that concept soooooo offensive. It implies weakness and it takes the opposite of that to leave the only thing you've ever known. Anyway, I love life and am having a blast and looking forward to making some new friends here!!

Are you easy to influence?
by JH inare you the type that's easily influenced by the opinion of others?
i'm easy to influence, but once i'm back alone, i do what i wanted to do originally.

I think that how easily influenced a person is depends alot on who's doing the influencing.

Hiding the xmas tree!
by curlygirl inhas anyone else had to hide their xmas tree because their jw relatives can't pick up a phone?

I'm telling ya--this tree was seven feet tall and loaded!!!!! You know when you pull a branch back and the balls slingshot across the room?!!! Not only did I have to shove it in the closet--------I then had to vacuum up all of the broken glass!!!!!!!! Can you imagine what they were thinking? I'd have to say that my hubby deserves an Oscar for his performance though! It's insane the hoops we jump through to NOT make waves!
Oh! and Funkyderek, I broke out in a cold sweat at just the thought of 20 marijuana plants! You are too funny!!
