You know how you felt when you studied really hard on a test and you looked across the room and caught your friend cheating. She wasn't caught and got an A and you hated her for it? I think this analogy works with dubs. They have been working so hard for some elusive prize of happiness because they've been told that's the way it has to be done. Then they see their sister get the prize of happiness and enjoyment of life after they leave and the dub feels cheated. What do they do with their jealousy? They turn it into a self-righteous shunning crusade.

THE REAL REASON FAMILY MEMBERS SHUN.........................
by vitty ini think the real reason family members shun their "loved ones" is not because they love you and think it will bring you back, or that they are being obedient to god, but that you have totally embarrassed them, brought the family name into disrepute and it now brings into question how spiritual they are.. if they shun you, in their minds, they think the elders, and dubs will not think less of them.
its all about what the "neighbours " think not what the bible teaches.. its about pride not love.. what do you think?.
oh and it gives them brownie points to be used at armageddon.......................just in case.. .

Oh, I am so glad it's my weekend to take the girls to my church (instead of dh and kh). We are having a Fall Education kick-off in my church, 10-ft waterslide and snowcones. The contrast is striking. Guilt vs. Fun. Ya know what I hate most about this? They reference a thirteen year old girl talking about her baptism in reference to not being too young. THIRTEEN is too young for any life-altering decisions. I don't care if it is baptism, sex, etc. You can not make an informed mature decision at age 13 and that is all there is to know! Of course, 13 yr olds wouldn't agree, but the fact that they are pressuring these very impressionable young ones to make this HUGE choice is terrible! HS

Are Faders Making It Too Easy For The WT?
by ThomasCovenant ini've always tried to teach my kids to follow aesop's fable of the 'sun and the wind', i.e.
try the gentle persuasion method for achieving your goals rather than head on aggression.
however as with most things in life there is a time and place for both.

I may be a fader, but that doesn't mean I have been passive. I definitely am not vindictive though. By being vindictive the WT would still be controlling my emotions, and I will never give them control of my life again. I feel that living a full life is the best testament to the evils of the WT. Instead of tearing the WT down, I choose to take positive steps in helping victims rebuild their lives.
I am a big advocate for the little victims of abuse. My goal is to to bring dignity and equal rights to children. If I decided to go up to a person on the street and slap them across the face or butt, I could be arrested. Why is this tolerated toward non-adults?
I remember the WT would attack "apostates" as never having any good to offer, only to tear down. Well, I am proof that isn't the case. I teach through my behavior tolerance, love, and respect for all life.

I've been going to the Unitarian Universalist church. Their philosophy is one of tolerance, they embrace the good in all religions (non-Christian as well). They teach that we are on a path and that there is no right or wrong answer. That sits well with me. I enjoy the thought-provoking elements in the sermons and "talk-backs" and always leave considering all the ways to look at a topic. There are atheists and agnostics in the group and I enjoy their perspective as well.

One of the most irritating things you can say to a Witness?
by free2beme inmy relatives that are still witnesses, always hate it when i say one thing to them, more then any others ... .

"were you at church?".

"You want me to read religious material designed to change my mind, but, hypocritically refuse to do the same--what's THAT all about?"
Love this Terry and this is one of the few listed in this thread that would have made me really think all day as a full-time dub.
Or:
"You preach about the dangers of propaganda because it is one-sided, yet your governing body discourages "independent thinking." Why is that?"

Would I really want to be in the "new world" anyway...
by hartstrings inthis morning in the shower i was thinking about why it is that jw's preaching (like i used to do) about a paradise with no wickedness really bothers me.
if jw's are right and god is going to destroy the majority of people so that just those who happened to live at the right time, in the right place, etc.
can live forever with a couple of men telling me, a woman what to do, no thanks.

This morning in the shower I was thinking about why it is that JW's preaching (like I used to do) about a paradise with no wickedness really bothers me. I DON'T WANT TO BE THERE. If JW's are right and God is going to destroy the majority of people so that just those who happened to live at the right time, in the right place, etc. can live forever with a couple of men telling me, a woman what to do, no thanks. I don't want to serve a God who would give humans the ability to think and then tell them not think. I don't want to worship a God who gives me self-autonomy and expects me to quash it. It boils down to the fact that I could not live forever with a God who teased me with all these "gifts" and then didn't allow me to use them. Not to mention, that any God who will destroy most of his creation just because they won't join a church that most think are crazy, well that's just...crazy. No thanks.
It reminds me of a poem from the early 20th century by Countee Cullen
Yet Do I Marvel
I doubt not God is good, well-meaning, kind,
And did He stoop to quibble could tell why
The little buried mole continues blind,
Why flesh that mirrors Him must some day die,
Make plain the reason tortured Tantalus
Is baited by the fickle fruit, declare
If merely brute caprice dooms Sisyphus
to struggle up a never-ending stair.
Inscrutable His ways are, and immune
To catechism by a mind too strewn
With petty cares to slightly understand
What awful brain compels His awful hand.
Yet do I marvel at this curious thing;
To make a poet black, and bid him sing!

Why do the majority of "newbies" disappear ???
by kid-A ini have noticed that, in general, there is a "core" of regular posters on jwd that have been members for several years.. however, it seems the vast majority of "newbies" disappear after a couple posts, days or perhaps a week.
how many "welcome" or "introduction" .
threads have we had here where the new member disappears within a day or so, never to post again?

When I first joined, I introduced myself, but was very scared and paranoid about posting. Paranoia is part of being a JW. It takes a long time to break that. Anyway, I'm sure they are lurking and that is okay. I think that maybe some day when they have gone through the various grieving stages, they will be back.

Barbara and Kimberlee, Thanks for the info on the court date (or lack thereof). So it is the judge's responsiblity to set the date and it has yet to be set? I'm assuming that since this is a civil trial that things so slower? Could it be another year, more?
