i finally put a couple of pieces together that have boggled me for years.. i would take my family to the conventions and assemblies and for some reason, my wife would always be upset or start an argument in the car on the way home, or in the week that follows.
i realize now that her frustration is that i am not the guy in the demonstrations.
you know, the guy who has the bestfriend/elder who always says the perfect thing and the guy is so humble and does this little talks-to-himself thing where he reveals his deep spirituality and applies the ever-so-wise words of his friend and after that life is just great again!.

Let's see. Growing up in the JWs I didn't have any friends since there were no kids my age in the KH.
I wasn't able to date girls I liked because they were worldy. I had to break up with the one whom you could say was my high school sweetheart because I didn't want to be destroyed in armageddon.
No sports or music.
Family activities was only limited to "field service" and meetings.
I was discouraged of applying to college.

I kind of made up for that time in my early twenties when I made new friends and a couple of great relationships. Although most of my friends have married and moved on I thank them for being a part of my life when I needed them.
I still have a great family that went through the same things and we support each other. I have a great job and have more time and money to do the things I've wanted to do. And there's a lot of things I still want to do.

When I was a kid, no joke, I used to pray before I took an exam. I prayed I would get an A.
And I did! That was proof that there must've been a GOD! Oh silly me.
i stopped being a jw altogether when i went into college and took philosophy classes and started thinking for myself.
i understand a lot of you former jw's are still theists, in fact it seems probably the majority of you are.
i am agnostic, meaning i don't feel there is enough evidence for against either cause to subscribe my lifestyle to one belief.. .

i don't know if this strange phenomenon is unique to my family but it seems that those who have left the truth have little to no interest in reaching out to those family members who have also left the religion.. it seems topsy turvy to me.
surely, there would be common ground and mutual support for those leaving/have left but this does not seem to be the case.. does anyone else have this problem?.
Leavingwt is so right. I still have a family member that I hang out with but if I say something about the Watchtower he gets so defensive. Even though he is inactive and didn't go to the past convention. But at least he still talks to me.
for me i know it was because i was a reader.. i began reading books at the age of 13, this was in the 1950's.
because there were some serious family problems i had two escapes i could count on reading and associating with my friends at the kingdom hall.. as i devoured steinbeck, hemingway, wolf etc.
my world view expanded....it had to.

The more I read about other philosophies, the more I saw the JW philosophy as weak. And I remember thinking to myself that you could take very good things from all points of views. It would anger me when I would the magazine used to put down other philosophies, specially the one's that I've read. I wish I could remember exact quotes.
i read an article on this 5 years ago or so and came upon this topic again in reviewing a book on amazon.
