I don't think you're a coward Gumby, I think you were faced with a "Fight or Flight" reaction in a very tough situation. If this incident still bothers you I would suggest taking an ETT or First Aid course through the Red Cross or a local fire station. You might then feel empowed to help the next time something like that happens. I was an EMT in a former life.... there were many time bystanders actually hurt the victim more in their desire to help (not that I think people shouldnt help when someone is in need), so it does me good to think that a bystander would have a little background knowledge when they are rushing in to help.

Accidents and shock
by LittleToe ina few minutes ago i was visiting my local grocery store (co-op) and heard a crash and a thud, to my left.
there i saw a guy sprawled out on the floor, having taken some of the contents of the shelves with him.. i approached quickly, and tried to guage a response, given that he was lying flat (not far off the recovery position) with his eye's fixed and blood trickling out of his nose.. after what seemed like eternity, but was likely only a couple of seconds, he groaned and started answering my questions.
he sounded drunk (could have just been dazed, or worse) but didn't smell of alcohol.. after a few more seconds one of the shop-stewards was at his side and taking over and insisting he lay still, with another one having hightailed it to call an ambulance.

Do you feel that "all" Christian denomnations should be "abolished"?
by booker-t ini ask this question because my "atheist" friend the other day told me that he is much mentally free now since he left christianity.
he told me that "all" christians that he comes into contact with or knows from his religious lifetime are "miserable" and that the govt should abolish all christian groups for the sake of perserving the mental health of the people.
christians never are satisfied with their lives because they are trying to measure up to "jesus" and the apostles and will never measure up which causes many nervous breakdowns among religious people of all christian groups not just jw or mormons but many born-agains have mental breakdown as well.

Since leaving the witnesses I have been to quite a few churches (mostly because of moving around alot) and I have to say that those statements seem to be grossly generalized. I gravitate towards non-denominational churches, usually "worship centers" or the like. Believe me, I never knew church could be FUN, but I always have the greatest time at church. The music is exciting, the people are happy and enthused and seem to take the messages to heart in their daily lives. This Sunday I had to chuckle to myself, as I noticed that the drum player was wearing a Harley Davidson T-shirt. Most others in the church were causually dressed also. In the church I had attended in my last town, it wasnt unusual to see Metallica or AC/DC shirts. Although there have been notable exceptions the people I have come to know in these churches were kind and helpful always, and led exemplary lives. No ones perfect, but the attitude and atmosphere was always something I valued, especially after growing up in the organization. And I never felt that I HAD to contribute, although when I could, I did. But then, everyones entitled to their opinions as far as Christianity and Church are concerned.

I am so sorry for your loss. I think you have come a great place to vent your frustrations and recieve wonderful advice. It has been my observation that by and far those who post here have the most helpful and insightful advice you could recieve. In an environment that you would think would be impersonal and sterile, these wonderful people have shown compassion and heart. I would offer my advice that you spend your time now with those in your life that show the same things, and lift you up, rather than beat you down and override your most heartfelt decisions.

Why Do People Become/Stay As Jehovah's Witnesses???
by minimus inwhat makes a person leave their religion and join the witnesses?
what makes a doubter or better yet a jw that knows this isn't really the truth, remain a witness?
i believe most stay on because being a witness is like being a member of a club.

Getting out...terminating Bible study
by PClark in.
i have been visited by a local jw woman weekly for almost 4 years and started weekly study about 1 year ago.
friday things took a more serious turn and i am very uncomfortable.. i need advise on how to stop the meetings (without being offensive) and still get away from this madness before it gets out of control.

It would be highly likely that they would send someone more considered more "mature" or eloquent to visit you to see if they might change your mind on the matter. Hence everyones concern that you leave no doubt in their minds that you will not tolerate any further contact from ANYONE in the congregation and to get yourself put on the "Do Not Call" list. I don't know if this means anything to you... but it will to them.

Congratulations! What an awesome opportunity, it gives me warm fuzzies to think that by your efforts and speaking even one child might be spared the horrible experience of growing up JW! I've always been drawn to the "Letter to JW Parents" that I believe is now in the "Best of..." section. I cried when I read it because it expressed so well all the things I felt growing up as a Witness. Its a lengthy read, but may be worth your time to formulate some ideas to present as to the dangers to the family unit that religion presents. Heres the link if youre interested in that- http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/59590/1.ashx I had my husband (who has never had any exposure to the witnesses, and has never met most of my family) read that letter and it opened his eyes to why I felt so strongly against JWs.

This isn't going to be an easy thing to do in my opinion, so you need to go into this situation resolved and with firm reasoning. Witnesses are trained to overcome any objection and are very good at it. I wouldn't be suprised to find someone in your situation who wants to make a clean break from it all to still be studing/attending meetings a year from now and not quite know what happened. They can be very overwhelming in overcoming your protests, and they LOOOOVE guilt, which can be a strong thing to argue against. So my advice would be to be firmly resolved, have your reasoning in line and absolutley refuse to have further contact with these people, even if they say it's to "Just see how you're doing". In my experience this was a tactic used to try to worm into a persons confidence again. Other than that, good luck! I really hope it works out for you, and I think you made a great decision.
