  Birthday celebrations and customs - Are they for Christians?

  i sent my birthday document (http://thebentinel.com/jw-birthdays.html) to a poster here that is at the very least a jw-sympathizer, if not a full-blown jw.

  the response i got back indicated that my reasoning on it was seriously flawed and essentially any idiot with a passing knowledge of scripture and history can tell that birthdays are not something christians should celebrate.. of course, if you're not a bible-believer or a god-believer, you couldn't care less about pagan origins and all that.

  but let's keep this conversation on the 'appropriate for christians' vein.

  i just got a major shock.

  i can't believe the new levels of cruelty possible within families who are jws.. a friend on this board who i've known since i was a baby practically has managed to get me a picture of my little sister who i haven't seen for 8 years - the one who i've mentioned my dad said was working on the bethel quick build team.

  the one who i've described my fears that she and my younger sister are staying single until armageddon.

But LOOK! almost a week later you take your MEAN jab at me. This is exactly why I dont respond to you 99% of the time and why I call you mean.   GRACE (undeserved kindness)

  this has been bothering me for some time now and i'm hoping that some here will shed some light on the subject.. paul goes to great lengths to tell us that we can't earn god's grace (undeserved kindness).. the wts also says that.. but, the bible does give us some do's and don'ts.

  the bible does tell us about individuals who would be bad association.

  it also tells us about some sins that would cause the sinner to be ineligible for the new kingdom.. so do we in fact have to earn the undeserved kindness?

  my understanding of the "big snooze" is that the essay maintains that jws have misrepresented quotes from secular sources.

  is this message board not an obvious misrepresentation?

  it claims to represent jehovahs witnesses (in its title)yet the vast majority of posters are anti jw and many have been expelled.

  JWs and the holidays at work

  i had lunch this week with some business colleagues and one of them complained that at her office there is now a "no merry christmas" policy which includes not saying merry christmas, not decorating the office for christmas, no christmas party, no secret santa games or exchanging of gifts.

  i asked why all the rules and she said that there is one woman (out of nearly 150 employees) who is a jw and office management has decided the best way to handle the situation without excluding this woman or offending her in any way is to eliminate all reference to the holidays.

  as you can imagine the other employees are in an uproar.

  I dont agree with ANYONE haveing to change plans for us. We are the ones who do not celebrate the holidays. That is one thing that does upset me with some. They feel that people need to accommadate them because of our beliefs, which is not right. At my work I just dont attend. No biggie, life goes on. Even if they CHANGE the name of the party I still wouldnt go and believe me I have went through that. Not because they wanted me there, but so that they could entrap me and have something on me. Its funny. Also, I just heard that some stores if not all who sell christmas tress are not calling them that anymore. Why? Not because of JWS but because of ALL the people who do not Celebrate xmas and are offended by it. Strange!

  No. Of cousre i dont feel I did anything wrong. I was freely speaking like everyone else was. The mods didnt see it that way. That is water under the bridge now. Besides I think they allow me to be much freer here and I appreciate that. I have gotten too comfortable and need to tone it down a bit I admit, before I am disfellowshipped again.
