Welcome Checkie,
Like you, I'm more curious in regards to what's been going on since the year I left and this is a great place to do so! Finding out more stuff I was never aware of, its amazing how ignorant I was.

this is the second installment in my new series on short, understandable, powerful evidences for evolution.
the first installment is here:.
installment 1: endogenous retroviral sequences.
SNG,
Again, thanks for all the hard work in presenting this material. Looking forward to next week's installment. I just came across some AlanF's posts on the "creation book" yesterday in regards to the misquote issue-unbelievable (well, sadly it is too believable of the org.)! I'm embarassed that I "placed" a couple of those back when it came out in the eighties.
Presently, I think the "super Aliens" (a la Stanley Kubrick's 2001 Space Odyssey) theory holds as much water as any of the others (no, I'm not a Trekkie!).

Have a great weekend anyways!

for years, the watchtower drilled into us that we are just specs of unimportant dust.
personal pride was touted as being something wrong and a trait of the devil.
that mentality stifles creativity and initiative, which i suppose is what they want.
The biggest accomplishment was getting my education (after high school I was totally without any carewer direction other than the option of "pioneering or going to Bethel) . I wasn't keen on a business degree but it was the only one attainable while I worked at two jobs to make ends meet (no financial help from folks) and I still had to bugger myself financially. The funny thing is that my "goal" was just to prove to myself what I could have accomplished (during my fadaway period) if I'd gotten a "regular start out of the gate".
My lack of personal ambition is one of my behavioural "challenges" from my upbringing (I don't have a woman applying any shoe polish to my backside).

Sorry, just one more thought,
Can Business and State be separated in the U.S. anymore?
Those annoying environmental and child labour laws are damned hindrances though I must agree!

Robert,
Fair enough. (the "implosion" forecast is based on models run at Midwestern's finance faculty). Will check out Austrian economics though!

one reason is that you don't have to go to boring meetings 5 times per week and field service where you knock on doors knowing no one will answer.
I don't have to accept as "gospel" the pronouncements of a bunch of old men in New York who tell me they "know" what God thinks!

Sorry Robbie...no sale.
That's the theory, (yes, I have studied developmental economics) but not the practice. American corporate industries "play dirty" (I realize agriculture is a sensitive, semi-strategic issue for most governments). Remember, our entire capital market structure ( valuation with almost no no relation to profits/cash flow) is supposed to "implode" in about fifty years.
The current business fad of "super-sizing" corporate entities is due to a "highjacking" of shareholder/owner interests to that of their agents (a study of agency cost theory can leave you depressed!).
Management Science is really a "hodgepog" of related disciplines which is neither "complete" nor "comprehensive" and Mr. Smith exemplifies many of those deficiencies. Free markets do have an expansive capability but the costs to each society are rarely acknowledged (industrial farming and the degradation of the local water tables, etc...). Smith has his place in the pantheon of "business gods" (particularly for engineering students) but will hopefully his work will fade away.

two of the elders on my appeal committee called me yesterday to let me know they are upholding the decision to df me.
of course, there was no question that they would do that, i even told the guy last time he called that i only appealed to buy some time before the announcement to visit with my jw family.. the interesting thing is how long this has drug on.
my original committee decided to df me towards the end of january, i appealed at the beginning of february, and now i'll finally be announced near the end of march.
Perhaps indignation? (I forget what your heinous "sin" was).

i just dont get how people can stay in a religion that constantly changes the "truth".
never mind the scandals, that is a seperate issue.
but the foundation of a religion is its doctrine, how can you believe an organiztion that constantly changes it.
It's unfortunate but many people would be happy to let somebody else do their heavy thinking for them. For the older generation like my folks, it boils down to "escalation of commitment" IMO and social control/programming for the younger (but this is no longer as effective with resources like the internet).
By "providing all the answers" (no admissions ever from GB such as -"well, we're not really sure..."), the org. provides individuals with an opportunity to abrogate their personal responsibility in moral decisions. An attractive package for many.
