This promises to be a touchy subject with the Korean government given the desired American Army reductions in the South Korean Peninsula.

this is an interesting article i found.
i guess if you were to ask anyone on a street anywhere in the world what they think is the leading developed country in the world, they'd probably say the us.
so with that in mind, here's some interesting statistics.... .
The U.S. does seem to be declining in many critical areas while Europe has been forced to start addressing them (advanced education, environmental policy, power generation, urban policy, etc...).
The unprecedented growthof the American republic is very unique and largely due to the one-time opportunity for unbridled continental rapine. Expansive economics certainly "worked" (if you forget about the aboriginals and other players forced out over the last 500 years) giving rise to the current level of national faith in "free" capitalism. It's evident (to me) that this "free for all" period is over, the resources are getting scarcer, arable land is shrinking and industrial farming techiques are exibihiting huge hidden costs, the manufacturing base is shrinking, etc...). American workers are now being squeezed as a result (hey, profits gotta come from somewhere!)
At the turn of the previous century, most Britons didn't want to hear those economists and observers who were trying to warn them of Britain's economic decline. China is benefitting from a long-term plan of strategic economic development by dangling market access and will surpass the U.S. economy this century. How they do "societally" remains to be seen (development of intellectual and creative communities, etc...).
This is just the natural state of things though. All societies decline.

the season finali (sp?
) of one of the greatest shows ever to hit the tv.
and i don't say that lightly.
For Space Opera, its the best thing on the tube right now. Up in Canada we're just getting the first season now (still waiting for some good violence!). Some little annoyances but not bad overall.

my local upn station keeps moving enterprise around.
sometimes it's on friday, sometimes it's on wednesdays, sometimes it's not on at all.
so as a result i haven't watched more than a couple of espisodes this season.
I'd rather watch an old Dr. Who episode any day over any of the Trek offerings (horrible space opera-Blah!!!).
Robert, I remember that juror, "the Commander" (did you see the movie "Trekkies"?)

i had heard of accounts of young baptisms, but i figured it was the exception rather than the rule.
now i wonder, after viewing the models of youth paraded at the last assembly.
i took note of the ages and age of baptism of the five young men (no girls this time) who were interviewed as models of jw youth at this last week's assembly.
Been there, got the T-shirt, still trying to recover!
I was fifteen (one of the youngest in my Hall) but it seems to me that even JW kids used to wait until 17/18 years in the '60's /'70's.. Can any senior members comment on whether this is a new trend?

so i was out working in my yard the other day.
i've met a lot of my neighbors that i didn't know recently, because as i'm working in the yard, they stop by to chat as they're walking the dog, etc.
i'm really getting to know the neighborhood.
Its amazing to be contantly finding out that most of our neighbors are nice humans worth interacting with. I try to be more active on my "street" and really enjoyed my first Toronto neighborhood which was southern Italian (yes, evil Catholics). Many witnesses are so caught up their "make busy" work (courtesy of the org.) to even realize how negatively they're viewed by others because of their "attitude"in really being part of a community.
who of you on the jwd grew up in a small town?
take us back to one small event in your childhood that you remember.......this may just be a tactile sensation, like the smell of hay or pines or may be something as simple as the feeling of hot, dry dust underfoot........
for me, i remember the hardness of the soil in upstate new york.
I grew up in a small industrial (in the great white north) and what I miss the most is the church bell organ of the main church in town (they used to play everyday). Still miss that sound (never mentionned it to my folks though!). I also miss the accents of the people there.

my favourite band for a long time now is called marillion...not big in usa...bigger in uk and bigger still in europe...i'm sure that the songwriter had been through something similar to myself as many of the songs reflect the exact same feelings and frustrations as me..and many a night i would put on a cd and cry myself to sleep....one of my all time favourite lines in a song..which i wish id written is- when you list all the qualities that you despise..and you realise..you're describing yourself.... anyway on an album called-holidays in eden-(sic)..there is a song called-100 nights- and one verse reads this way:-.
they invite me to their gatherings.
in the finer parts or town.
Sounds like a typical rock gig to me! I forgot all about Marillion (they were a pretty cool group now that I remember them).

i was born into the "truth", so it is pretty much to only life i have known.
i have been studying the bible seriously since my teens, about 15+ years.
then it hit me about 6 months ago, i?m not really studying the bible, but rather the wt publications.
Hey Jula,
Welcome to the forum and the real "world". Thinking isn't a crime here.

i finally figured out why i'm so socially retarded...it just hit me.. here i was sitting and wondering why i have such a hard time meeting new people, making friends, thinking of relevent things to say, and so on.
it really is painful and scary for me.
i was told who i could talk to, who i couldn't talk to, what i could say, what i couldn't say.
Merry and Crumpet,
You guys aren't really that weird (well just a little!).
It took a lot of years of work for me in regards to friendship building department of life. My folks were hardcore and there was no "clean" association in our hall (even the elders' kids in my age group) while school associations were not on! Our parents now admit that it negatively impacted on all the kids' social development to varying degrees. I still feel a little "strange" sometimes trying to explain the way I am to "worldy" friends.
That said, it is something one has to work on constantly. I actually ended up with a couple of good friends from a cooking class I joined a couple of years ago! Ya gotta be "out there" and we were trained to be too passive when it came to personal fulfillment (hobbies, personal interest education, etc...) and its hard to shake those behaviours. (I still have some of the "God's only people"arrogance left!).
This is a very common "challenge" for most of us I think.
