  What films and TV shows couldn't you watch?

  what films and tv shows couldn't you watch when you were a witness kid?.

  i remmember being banded from watching scooby doo, ghostbusters ,e.t., (some british ones)count duckula, rent a ghost, well basicly anything with ghosts in it.. my parents wouldn't watch any films with much swearing in them, especially the f-word.. which is fair enought.but i don't notice swearing so sometimes i recommend a film without realising its got lots of naughty words.. sometimes a very sensitive brother from the hall would come round to visit, and he would be visably shocked if there was any sex or swearing in a tv programme which often made it embarassing when watching tv when he was round.. once when we had some friends round and we got waynes world out on video, a couple of the brothers walked out as they thought it too worldly.

  In our rural MN congregation, everything rated R was out. We even were looked down upon for watching PG and PG-13 movies. I remember alot of older bro's and sis's getting after us because there was sarcasm. I guess that was too much for them.

  All soap operas were off limits, as well as and cartoons that hinted of magic or ghosts or any sort of violence. Our presiding overseer got after us for watching "The Little Mermaid"! His daughters got away with watching Aladdin, but could not watch Little Mermaid?????? Something dont click there!

  We were always encouraged to watch the societies videos when they came out in the early 90's.

  Now that I am out of the org, I do not hold myself to those silly rules anymore, although I do have personal preferences that I go by.

  Did any of you ever hear of the JW rating system?

  G = Garbage
  PG = Pure Garbage
  R = Reproachful

  We had a brother who was always telling us those "ratings" from the platform. He was one of those brothers who would get all tearful and start sobbing from the stage if something hit him as particularly emotional. He also forbid us to use the word WEIRD because he said it had demonic meaning.

  Mother, wife, myself, DA'ing ourselves

  well, i've finally had it.

  i'm da'ing myself, along with a piece of my fam.

  the unbaptised ones are refusing to go with my father now, and even my still devout father is leaning towards our opinion on things.. there wasn't even any screaming when i called the jw's the great hypocrisy last nite.. i just can allow myself to be associated with them in any way.

  Congrats on a very brave move.

  The going will not be easy. Keep your head straight, keep positive, and put your needs first. You will find leaving to be the best thing you ever did.

  As each year goes by, I am more and more greatful that I left. I feel so free and happy. I know you and your family will too.

  Suggestions for pamphlet

  i would like to put together a 1 sheet pamphlet explaining about jw's for people who are curious about them.

  in it, i would like information to be simple, true, logical, and non-fanatical.

  i am open to any suggestions as to what to print in it, as i am not good at phrasing things on paper!.

  I do like the idea of bringing out that JW's will be more loyal to the congregation/elders than complying with laws on privacy.

  Yes, I would like to bring out the cases of child molestation too. The public definatly needs to know that the current system for JW's dealing with molesters is flawed.

  No, unfortunaly my name has nothing to do with corvettes! Just my internet name is all!

  I am writing up a first draft, I will post it when it is finshed. I encourage all feedback.

  Hello!

  I would like the general gist of it to be:

  "What Jehovah's Witnesses do not tell you"

  or

  "Things you should know about Jehovah's Witnesses"

  Again, I want the emphasis to be on simple truth about them, nothing hateful or fanatical. The aim of it would be to make sure people are really informed about them in all ways.

  Someone suggested that these could maybe be inserted into WT and Awakes we find at Laundermats, etc.

  if yes, did u do ample research and think carefully but still believe in it?

  if u don't think that the story should be taken as literal, what is your reading of it and do u still believe in the bible as the inspired word of god?...thanks in advance..

  I also think it is important to look at the track record of famous witnesses as most of them did not continue being witnesses. The Jacksons come to my mind. I know there have been a few "witnesses" who have played in the NFL, but they did not remain witnesses in good standing. Same with a few film stars that claimed to be witnesses, but they either quit their film career, or just quit being witnesses. It has been so long since I have read about it, so I can't recall specific names right now.

  for me, the word was "loving".. great "loving" kindness.. great undeserved "loving" kindness!.

  disfellowshipping is a "loving" provision.. when the wtbts want their accolytes to swallow another bitter pill, another restriction, another rebuke, another demand on time, the buzz word is "loving".. the "loving" word, is, to the average jw, the same as the mccabe nod is to the salesman.

  the mccabe nod is used by salesman all the time to get the prospective customer to agree to something that he doesn't care for too much.

  What I always hated was being admonished to refer to a congregation dividing as FORMING A NEW CONGREGATION, instead of the common terms SPLITTING or DIVIDING. The reason told was that the word divide or split would make it look unfavorable, like there were problems.

  I always disliked the terms WORLDLY and SHEEP-LIKE-ONES. Both always denoted superiority.

  something has puzzeled me for a long time since i came to this board.

  first i would like to say i'm not judging any in what i'm about to say as we all are at different places in our lives and i respect that.. here it is: at what point in your life did you no longer believe in god or believe the bible?.

  how many came to this conclution after coming to this db?.

  I was agnostic before I started lurking on the board earlier this year.

  I classify myself as "independently spiritual", believing in my own ideas and thoughts. :-)
  What a change from being "collectively religious". What a change and what a relief!
