  Witnessing to witnesses tips

  i've just registered on this site.

  i'd like to kick off by asking this wealth of experience what your most successful witnessing to witnesses tips are.

  so if you're a non-and-has-never-been-a-jw, what stops them in their tracks?

  Hello!

  One of the best articles I have ever read about talking (or trying to talk) with JW's was written by Timothy Campbell of Beyond JW's. I tried to look up the particular article, but it must be in the process of being revised because I could not locate it. I found a related one here by the same author.

  I highly recommend reading it.

  Basically, the article I wanted to share was about how it is probably not going to do much good to try to witness to JW's. They are pre-programmed so much that it is very hard. Not impossible, but extremely hard. Most JW's that leave already have doubts, and it is usually some circumstance that befalls them that triggers the leaving process. Once I locate the article, I will definatly share it.

  What org rules were stupid to you?

  when i was in the truth i thought that the most ludicrous and petty ruling they ever introduced and still practiced is that congregation book study conductors were and are responsible for collecting every group members report.

  surely every member ought to be responsible for his/her own actions.

  at the beginning of the following month and certainly before the 5th i would always receive the stupid telephone call from the secretary are you aware that 3 publishers havent reported?

  Counting and reporting your field service time was a totally stupid rule. No where did I ever find a scripture that justified it. Isn't your time devoted to serving God supposed to be personal? Doesn't the WT get that?

  Going door to door was also stupid. Very few people converted to the JW's from straight door to door work. It seems to me the JW's like to use old pre-1900 ways of doing things. Door to door is from an era of a long time ago. Few people today trust or appreciate those that go door to door. Face it, in todays world, our home is our castle. One reason we have a home is to be at peace, and to be away from the hustle and bustle of today. The last thing most people want is someone coming un-invited to your door. I was told that time after time after time when I pioneered. I gave the cover statement "that a lot of people appreciate our calls" to save face, knowing full well that most people DID NOT appreciate our calls.

  I also thought the rule of not wearing skirts that were any length above the knee was dumb. This may have been a regional rule, I do not know for sure if all of Watchtowerdom practiced this one. Hey, I understand modesty, but short skirts/dresses are not going to make the world come to an end.

  I agree that the no facial hair on men rule is stupid as well. Does not the Bible they believe in tell them that Jesus, the apostles, and pretty much every man in the Bible had facial hair? Facial hair is a natural thing. I am surprised they dont have restrictions on if you can or cannot shave your hair on other regions of the body. Imagine inforcing that! It is just stupid. Many business professionals have facial hair. They keep it neat so it does not look bad.

  I think the rule about not standing up when the flag comes by at a parade or event is dumb. I honestly don't understand the harm in showing respect. Standing up is not showing worship, it is just showing good respect.

  Six degrees of bad association...

  i had the pleasure of adding jesika to my list last night and after the haze of the sake bombs parted, i had good thoughts of all the apostates/people from this board i have met.

  if i left some of you off, feel free to rebuke me at any time and please remind me if we have met and i just couldn't remember.....i'm wondering if we have six degrees of bad association...if any of you lovely folks have met any of the folks on my list then lets play a game and see how many names we can come up with and add your own list too.

  What's your dirtiest habit??

  i don't have any but i am going to tell on my lady boss, who is a 26 yr old lawyer of the hoity toity breed who was incidently born with golden slippers.

  this morning as i walked into the ladies room we passed each other as she was on her way out.

  we smiled and said hi, then next thing i see her pass her hand under a drip from the tap...and then hastily wipe her hand on the towel before rushing out.

  I always hated my mom's habit of licking her hand and then wiping our face with it. Any one else have a mom that did that?

  Speaking of bad habits. I deal cards in a casino. I ALWAYS wash my hands when I go on break after handling the chips. We had one customer one time (maybe more than once, who knows!) take his chips to the bathroom with him. A fellow dealer observed him urinating in the urinal. He was still trying to hold onto his chips, but they all fell right into the urinal while he was still going. He did not wash his hands or the soiled chips! Yuck!

  Hmmm, bad habits that I have. Here is a gross one when I was young. I used to like to eat the butter-flavored crisco out of the can. I get disgusted remembering it now. I did it because I liked how it felt in my mouth. Grossssss! Some things should not be remembered!

  It is possible that Ruth has gotton married since then, thus she has had a name change so that is why it is hard to find information on her.

  puts plugs in his ears from the start.. now, it don't seem to be my imagination, but many ladies for some inexplicable reason seem a tad unreasonable at least once a month where anything i do seems to be wrong in their eyes.

  most ruddy irksome it is from a guys point of view i can tell ee.

  here we are, quite happy in our own right, say something to this here balmpot, and wowwwwww irritable utterances just tumble forth with such degrees of unreasonableness tis almost funny to observe, but dare i laugh in their presence whilst she be in this most unpredictable of states?

  were you ashamed of being a witness?.

  how did you feel about identifing yourself as a jehovahs witness to others?.

  i often used to hide it because of the stigma attacthed to it.. was anyone actually proud to be one?

  Yes, I was ashamed to be the only witness in school for years. I hated being the only one not saying the pledge of allegience. The other children would always tease. They always made fun that I could not participate in pep-rallies, birthdays, and holiday activities. I think most of my classmates got a sour attitude towards Jw's from seeing what we were forbidden to do.
  Some of the experiences here reminded me of very same experiences I had too. Praying at Hardees or McDonalds was totally embarrasing! I would always try to have the excuse of going to the restroom once everyone got thier food and was ready to pray. The worst was saying prayer out loud in a small but packed cafe! Seems to me the other patrons felt that we were showing ourseles superior by praying before eating our donuts and cookies. I hated doing business territory and having to say my presentation before a lot of people at one time...especially when I could hear the negative comments of customers in the place of business. We tried street work in our small town. It was a failure! We kept running into the same people, very very embarrasing. The final straw was being made to stand on the entrance to the post office, holding up the WT and Awake. I think the brother in charge of that arrangement wanted to bring back what it was like to witness in old times. No one ever attempted street witnessing again.
  When I moved to a bigger city and congo, witnessing in the college dorms was quite an experience. We would encounter party hardy kids who had smoked and drank wayyyyy too much. They would be loud and boistrous and try to do things to make fun of us when we called. They would ask stupid questions and laugh and would follow us and make trouble.

  When we were witnessing in one small town, all the young teens came on alert to our precence and proceeded to follow us and harass us until we would leave. I always hoped that my classmates woud NEVER see me. Sure enough, when one did, it was broadcast through the entire class and I recieved teasing. I look back and am reminded of how important is was to be accepted by one's classmates and that contributed at least to me a major self-esteem problem since I was not accepted. Now as an adult, I know better, but as a child, it was a very horrifying ordeal to be subjected to. In my freshmen year of highschool, I had the record for being absent due to "sickness", I did just about everything and used every excuse to get out of going to school. No wonder I jumped on the homeschool bandwagon so quickly. It was relief from constantly sticking out like a sore thumb and frequent teasing and singling out.

  I run into former classmates of mine from time to time and all of them so far are happy that I left the JW's. They have grown up as well and admit that a lot of the teasing was very immature. It still amazes me how important my peer's views were back then. They mean very little to me now. I wish I could have known back then what I know now as the old saying goes.

  i read a comment by belbab on hillary's post this morning...he remarked that he had asked a question after the 09/11 attack, that no one answered.

  well, i didn't even remember reading it, so i did a simple search.

  I generally browse any catagory that catches my interest. I may or may not post a response, depending on my mood and if the contribution is relevant.

  Flame and attack threads do not interest me as I know that responding, no matter how good of point one makes, only satisfies the flamer because of attention. I enjoy reading all the personal experience threads, which helps you to get to know how each one of us got here and why.
  I don't bother with fluff threads as I have more than enough fluff in my real life to enjoy. :-)

  My favorites would have to be the intellectual discussions on evolution and Bible interpretation.

  I like some funny threads and have been known to literally roll on the floor laughing in tears!
