I’m sorry your mom’s in bad shape. It’s a distressing thing to watch a parent go through dementia. So, she’s the reason they are coming over! Just make sure none of your other relatives are making a similar mistake.

Depending on how far gone she is mentally, you could change her phone number. I know I would DO this immediately to solve the problem of unwanted people of any sort trying to contact a vulnerable individual.. But, if she’s not at that point yet, you will have to manage the problem carefully and tolerate the intruders.

If it were me, I would privately tell off these people because I wouldn’t want JWs in my house and would be bothered they were there. I wouldn’t be able to relax.. If they are going to be nervy and take advantage of a situation where they know they are not wanted, I would make them feel very uncomfortable.

Again, I’m glad you say you are managing the purse strings in view of all the obvious requests for money. 👎

Another congregation closed

15 years ago there were 5 congregations now there is only one and it is still struggling.

congregations closing their doors doesn’t mean business is good.

it looks like this last one to fold had no young witnesses, they either left the religion or moved.

There’s No way I would have driven over an hour to another kingdom hall.. My hall was under ten minutes away and I missed meetings now and then. Of course, I worked full time but still..

As for the JWs who do this long drive to the new hall, I assume they aren’t elderly and this isn’t at night in the winter with ice on the roads! ..Maybe for people like this they might make a sunny Sunday meeting in milder weather - but maybe not every week with gas prices.

Nah, the religion is delusional if they think they can yet keep selling off halls and that people will drive even further to the next one. At some point, there will be people who just won’t go anymore.

Just as well I’ve been out for ages. I would never have done this.

Sorry, but it sounds to me that they are inadvertently being encouraged to keep coming back because SOMEBODY is greeting them and exchanging pleasant conversation.. It might be small talk but it’s just enough to give them ‘hope’. Somebody is making a mistake at your end, I believe.

Regarding your mother and them trying to use her ‘to get everybody in line’ 🙄: I believe you mentioned in another thread that your mother is failing mentally and that she’s not handling her own affairs. I remember when our Dad was failing mentally. (We weren’t Witnesses, but it’s applicable to anybody.) But, he was fast losing it and I remember getting on the other phone extension and telling off a very aggressive girl trying to sell him a car warranty. I told her to Never call again!

While your family’s life is their business.. I could not tolerate nervy behavior on the part of anybody (no matter what company, religion, organization, etc.) who has been repeatedly told Not to call. In my opinion, and if it were MY business: an employee would be instructed to go and open the door and say we’re not interested. No other conversation.

If it were my home: if I saw through the window who it was, I would NOT answer the door nor would I exchange ANY words through the crack. There would be dead silence. Maybe this needs to happen a few times before they realize it’s a lost cause. But, I will repeat: ANY conversation or greeting no matter how short is an encouragement for them to keep calling back!! Any phone calls would also be blocked. No communication.

It seems your well-off family will always be on the Witnesses’ radar and they will never stop calling on them.

I wouldn’t tolerate this and would tell them point blank that I will call the police and file a formal complaint if they persist.

The nerve of them to imagine that people they criticized for getting an education and careers are going to give them money! They are just shameful, in my opinion.

I would have a ruined life now (like many older JWs) if I followed bad advice and caved in to intimidation to quit a decent job years ago!. (These idiots thought I should take up housecleaning and do favors like some mindless moron for Users and affluent old ladies in the congregation.)

Words cannot describe that there is No forgiveness on my part. I’m glad I’m Out many years and don’t want to know these people.

Probably that is already happening!

I am sure the people in the congregations are already being hit up for money for every conceivable reason including for every Tom, Dick and Jane who never worked!

No doubt, the elders have their list of every ‘responsible’ person and anybody who is employed. (Wouldn’t even matter if the working person is criticized for their job like I was.) ..They will then sneakily make their way over to corner these individuals privately with an envelope and a sob story to contribute, etc.. Probably the only people not approached are those who are definitely known to be ‘needy’ or with ‘serious issues’. Everybody else is fair game.

I have been Out of the JW religion for over 21 years. I am also retired several years. Thankfully, I held onto that job they all hated me for.

If I were still in the religion, I could count on these hypocrites with their selective memory loss making their way over to me asking for money. This would not be tolerated. In fact, I would never go anywhere I’d be a target for panhandlers!

That’s just it. The religion itself is NOT able to deliver these promises and never has been. They were promising everybody that somebody else, namely God, is going to do these things.

Of course, they made it sound like they had a direct pipeline to God. Then in recent years they finally admitted they are not inspired.

So, now what you have are many older JWs who sacrificed (unnecessarily) for many years and are tired of waiting. But, the religion cannot make this ‘paradise’ happen. They just whet everybody’s appetite with tantalizing artwork and speculation, in my opinion.

No, it is not your imagination especially lately. There are some angry older JWs because the pandemic wasn’t the End they’d hoped for. Now they have to carry on in spite of age and inadequate (or no) preparation for retirement. They were supposed to be in the promised ‘New System’ by now.

An acquaintance was sounding like the wicked witch saying ‘they were warned’! In truth, though, if it were a Real warning work they’d be using the media and billboards, etc.

In general, I believe a few teachings of the JWs leads people to believe they can do and be forgiven for just about anything: the Adamic death thing which supposedly wipes the slate clean; the forgive your ‘brother’ and not sue; some pioneers imagining people are supposed to tolerate them; and the few very old timers who imagine because they knew some ‘important’ people in the old days it gives them a ‘pass’.. These beliefs and mindsets are responsible for some of the arrogant attitudes I remember seeing and partly why I wanted no dealings with people there.

ironic justice is the best revenge.” the inventor of the brazen bull, one if the most heinous torture devices in history was tricked to go inside of it and died of the torture he created.. probably one of the greatest movies ever made features revenge as its theme: once upon a time in the west.

sadly in this movie the main character doesn’t rely on ironic justice happening by god or chance.

I am assuming this thread is about angry people’s attitudes towards the religion.

I am Out many years. Since I wasn’t raised a JW, it was easier for me to transition back into normal life. I also hung onto my secular job until retirement. Other people had and are having a worse time - especially older people who heeded bad advice to not get a career or bother planning for retirement.. What a predicament.

I imagine there must be countless needy people wishing for justice for time wasted in ‘full time ministry’ decades ago when they were young that could have been better spent in a career that paid for their then future (which is here now)!

hundreds of times the wt has used the term honest-hearted in their literature.

it sounds biblical, if for no other reason because we hear it so often in jw circles.

the former elder who was being interviewed mentioned a couple of things i noted.

i would like to know what your reactions were at the time you learned what i am going to relate if you had the same or kindred experience.

I tend to agree with you there. Their advice was almost never for the benefit of the person seeking it.

What I had noticed in the years prior to my ‘Fade’ (and which annoyed me) was that the religion seemed to be ‘elevating’ the perception they wanted the rank & file to have of the elders.
