By urban legends do you mean the ones that they love to use at conventions?
You know, the ones describing how dubs in third world countries swim across crocodile infested waters, hack their way through a jungle and climb a mountain all to get to their meeting?
I used to hate these stories. Not because I don't believe there is a grain of truth to them (there might well be). But because they leave out a very important fact which separates us in the western world from a third world country. TIME! We are much more enslaved here with regard to our jobs, etc. For example, somebody in third world country might have a little garden they grow their vegetables on and they have their cattle - but they probably don't have to be at a 9 to 5 job! So, therefore, if they want to travel three days on foot to get to their convention they can do so - and take three days to get back, etc.
While I do appreciate their sacrifice and love I feel there is no comparison to somebody living in the western world.

A jw snopes type web site?
by Check_Your_Premises inany who have checked out snopes.com, know that it is a very effective baloney detection device.
it is amazing how many phoney stories end up coming some so many credible sources.
for the dubs, the urban legend serves an important function of protecting and bolstering their faith.

The JW new world system scum
by greendawn inwe now know that the new system of things as imagined by the jws is a myth, a poison that's meant to seduce the unaware into the org so that they can then be controlled, abused, and exploited.
but during the time when you were taken in by the myth what sort of things were you imagining about this delightful new world and your participation in it?
or perhaps deep down you never really believed it and ignored it.

I don't know if I thought I would make it or not. I used to have a fantasy, though, that I would meet all my ancestors. I would get to shake the hand of every one. Oh well.
But with regard to how it would happen and the cleanup, I think most dubs were unrealistic about it all. First of all, if everything was destroyed, we would be scrounging around like people after an earthquake. We would be starving and miserable amidst the death and destruction!
And as far as cleaning up the earth, some had the view that god would use some kind of non-poisonous atomic (I know this sounds stupid) way of disintegrating bodies, etc. Whatever.
It was a nice mental exercise. -

Did society go against Jehovah's will?
by TweetieBird infor decades it was always stressed (especially in one of the pubs that came out in the 70's, i think the one about the thousand years) that one of the signs of the beginning of the great tribulation would be when they started taxing religion.
in another thread we were directed to http://www.bibletopics.com/biblestudy/84a.htm about the society going to court to support jimmy swaggert.
it seems to me that maybe the society was running ahead of jehovah by doing so, and the organization started on a downward spiral since then, ultimately slapping jehovah in the face by going to bed with the un.

Years ago, before I became disillusioned a sister secretly said to me that she thought they spoke presumptuously. I guess that would be going against his will.

New light in everyday life.
by zagor inmy sister had to borrow some money, around $500 from this brother which she was going to return of course.
but she was getting married, and dub said "well you dont have to return that money it is your wedding gift.
" needless to say she was really happy and drilled my mind about jw being good people.

It is precisely for this same reason they now tell people to "get things in writing" when having somebody do some kind of work for you.
What you have experienced is typical when dealing with them. They are very unreliable and experience "amnesia" when something doesn't go their way. Not to mention the fact that they change like night and day. Even though you can have this sort of "misunderstanding" with any friend, even "worldly", it is more likely to happen with dubs. -

"This Generation" change -- fallout evidence?
by reagan_oconnor ini was reading the recent posts on 2034 and was wondering... .
the 1975 debacle left the fds scrambling for explanations for the mass exodus of r&f who were disillusioned by their bs.
the pat answer has always been, "those people didn't keep pace with god's chariot" and they weren't "strong in the truth" and allowed something so "minor" to "stumble" them.

The generation change teaching in 1995 had a delayed reaction.
Initially, some people were probably stunned. Then they tried to rationalize things. Then the disgust set in later. Over a period of time people left a little at a time.
Ten years later you see halls with half the people there and they didn't all die or move away. -

Exploitation of brothers & sisters
by LouBelle inin the past i visited bethel and got to 'tour' around.
here men & women worked their asses off every single day - a full 8 & 1/2 hours a day.
they had to make sure they were up at the crack of dawn to attend the reading of the day text.
-
LongHairGal
Yes. They are heavy duty into exploiting people, all the while making you feel you should be grateful for being exploited.
I always used to hear them say from the platform about how we should show hospitality. In other words, invite the freeloaders over your house. But what got me was that there were elders who NEVER showed hospitality.
I am convinced they had no use for anybody who didn't allow themselves to be used and abused. -

What was your breaking point?
by soundbox_guy inokay, i'm new as you all probably know, so my question may have been discussed several times in the past.
i'm just curious as to when some of you came to the conclusion that enough was enough and that you didn't want to attend the meetings anymore or not be a jw.
was it in field service, at home, at the hall?

Oh, there were so many things. And it happened gradually.
First rude awakening: being counseled about having a slit in my skirt. I then realized they were hung up on women's modesty and appearance.
Second rude awakening: realising that there was a feeling that I "owed somebody something" because I had a job. They used to parrot the stupid phrase about "supporting the pioneers" wtf?? Yeah, get the hell off the pioneer list and get a J-O-B. I don't owe ya nothin'!
Third rude awakening: realising that you couldn't ask questions and if you persisted you were viewed in a bad light.
Fourth rude awakening: realizing that certain people begrudged me my self-respect as an intelligent human being. They don't like you to feel good about yourself.
Fifth rude awakening: hearing stupid things from the platform and reading stupid and shocking things (the change in the generation teaching).
Sixth rude awakening: having so-called dub friends betray or turn their back. That was the second to last straw, realizing the friends were conditional. -

Is it morally OK to try to free people from the WTS and how?
by DannyBloem ini have some serious questions here.
i am still a jw but fading away slowly.
still have some privileges etc, but that will not be too long i suppose.
-
LongHairGal
I feel uneasy about this unless the person is somebody who is practically out anyway and they need moral support.
There are some persons who would go into a deep depression if you snatch away their belief system so I would be very careful. We all know what an emotional roller-coaster it was for us. So can you imagine if you talk to a person who is not well-grounded mentally?
I would never want to be responsible for somebody becoming despondent or suicidal! -

Should Men Moisturise?
by Englishman inso does rod stewart.
i like clarins the best.
it moisturises beautifully and leaves my skin as soft as a baby's bottom.
-
LongHairGal
Should they use soap, deodorant? Of course. A moisturizer is just a lotion for your face. It doesn't
have a gender. I don't even think it is bad if a man uses tinted acne cover-up. Some might consider
this makeup but I don't. Why shouldn't men use products that make their bodies feel better?

Just Because You "Feel" Something Is True Doesn't Make It So
by minimus init's interesting how some people "feel" and "know" whatever their gut tells them.
some are making the outcry that michael jackson is clearly a child molester.
whether he was acquitted or not makes no difference to them.
-
LongHairGal
There is one instance in which you should never ignore your gut feeling:
When you sense danger NEVER ignore it, even if you think you will look stupid. Better to look stupid!!
