Yes, it makes perfect sense.
Somebody who is cooped up in an ivory tower year after year, who is fed and clothed, given an assignment, and believes misleading information about the outside world and who finds themselves flung into it would suffer shock, no?
I guess it would be like being plunged into ice-cold water.

(coming out of retirement for interesting topics)
I agree with you about how people thought Bethelites got "pick of the litter".But I found them unappealing, unmasculine and a little crazy.
As far as I was concerned they could never measure up to a guy who deals with the real world. They seemed androidish to me.

What Happens When A Bethelite Questions the Governing Body
by VM44 ini found this personal experience at the freeminds website.
it shows that if a bethel worker asks too many questions they will be asked to leave!.
so if anyone here is currently working at bethel and wants to leave before their time is up, just start asking questions!

VM 44:
That was a very good letter in your second post. The writer was very sincere. But, I am sure it had no effect and fell on deaf ears because, as you stated in your later post, the organization is seeking to keep itself going. So, this brother got bounced out for being smart enough to realize the wrong and daring to bring it to their attention. They are not interested in righting any wrongs and clearly have no regard for anybody's rights or hurts or whatever. They literally are of the opinion that you can drop dead.
This is just like secular governments. What was originally put in place to benefit the people ends up having the reverse effect. It ends up being an end for its own purposes. This is an evil of human nature that keeps going on and on. The only difference between secular governments and the "Organization" is that secular governments have armies (not just to fight wars but to intimidate their population). They can extract taxation and service from people's hides. Whereas, the "Organization" cannot do this (and for this we can be grateful). How many of us have seen a cowboy attitude or overstepping of boundaries by the "brothers" in many instances? It would be horrible to imagine what could happen. They might even prove to be worse than the "Caesar" they always talk about.
I can almost detect that they are chomping at the bit and wishing they could exercise a right of eminent domain over everybody.

JW's asking for money
by sinis inmy wife was telling my jw friend who is visiting that for the past few meetings the brothers have been telling the cong that no one is donating and that they need money.
i told her it sounded like the end was coming.
she looked at me puzzled, as my friend did, and i explained what charley had originally said about when the money dried up it meant the jehovah no longer needed them.

My favorite topic!
This has been covered well in several other threads but I will comment again.
While I do not believe they have NO money, there is probably less and less coming in from contributions. This is their own fault. Their own stupid policies of discouraging higher education and secular work have come back to bite them. They have caused terrible, terrible problems for those gullible "faithful" ones who listened to this foolishness. While it is true that most christian religions speak against being materialistic the JWs are unique in that they actively persecute or gossip about ones who attend college or who make a good living. They are very biased against anybody who is a professional or highly educated. Whether jealousy enters into this picture is highly probable. I will mention, however, that some had their own business and were affluent and somehow avoided poverty but that was "okay" if they had the right personality or were generous.
Let's not forget the economy is bad. The old hard-liners who gave the most and were actually able to retire comfortably are dying off. The younger ones and those in mid-life are struggling to make ends meet. People who didn't save for retirement are trying desperately to catch up and a lot of these people are angry, I might add. The saddest ones of all, I think, are single women in their 40s who can't even afford their own apartment - let alone have a house! Some of them passed up good jobs or careers so they could pioneer. During the best years of their life they were doing housecleaning when they could have been making decent money somewhere. Now, they are eking out an existence! Is the society going to help them in their old age for which they are not prepared - HELL NO!
I could go on and on.

WTS Running Out of Money? Letter to all congregations...
by drew sagan ina few days ago my wife commented on a letter sent out to all congregations (in the u.s.a.?
) regarding donations.
se said it was long and boaring, but in the end there where a few points she remembered.

Further to my above comment:
It is painfully obvious (to me anyway) that all religions end up becoming like this. They may start out with noble beginnings and sincere people and they end up the same way - with the few trying to lord it over the many. Presumptuous claims and nothing to back it up except arrogance. As far as I am concerned, religions are just trying to mimic the monarchies of the world. It is no wonder they are so hated!
Here we are, students of history. All this is history repeating itself.

[This topic seems related to the layoffs] Sadly, they are morphing into a paid clergy class like Christendom - which I have NO intention of supporting. I never signed on for this. Many people became JWs because they had no use for a clergy class. Well, here it is - all dressed up with another name but with the same story. The bottom line is they want to be supported - and by people who they all criticised for working!! I can NEVER forgive or forget how they always discouraged college and secular work and caused terrible trouble for thousands who were foolish enough to follow this ridiculous advice. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that somebody with no college and a pitiful secular job would have next to no money to contribute even if they were inclined to do so. These POs and DOs are guilty for promoting this ridiculous stand and I have no use for them! Also, "wicked men and impostors will advance from bad to worse" in the congregations. Any here who are active better watch out for the slick-talkers in the halls who will try to separate you from your hard-earned money with talks designed to "guilt trip" you into giving or loaning money. Beware of schemes! You better put your fingers in your ears and run! My advice to these overseers and the "special pioneers" is GET A JOB!! LHG

PO said automation and declining contributions reason for Bethel layoffs
by truthseeker inlast week at the meeting, the po, who has very close connections to bethel, said that he never thought he would see the day that bethelites were being sent home.
he said that the biggest two reasons he thought bethel were cutting back, was automation and a massive decline in contributions.
looks like you're right metatron about the contribution aspect being their achilles heel.

[See excellent thread about DO put to pasture with no $$] Anitar: You are right, they are giving "hints" about the older people and insulting our intelligence. Yeah, hints about a problem THEY created. At some point they won't be hints anymore. The congregations will be hotbeds of trouble with desperate people looking for handouts. This, in and of itself, may push more people out the door! Anybody who is still active will be constantly assailed for requests for money until they can no longer stand being there! A scripture comes to mind: "Shrewd is the one who has seen the calamity and proceeded to conceal himself." LHG

In addition to my above comment:
Can you imagine the trouble in store for the congregations where these ex-Bethelites are being sent? I see big trouble on the horizon!!
The novelty of their presence will wear off in about five minutes. Just picture the endless requests for money to already strapped people - and the resentfulness of those who, being put on the spot, are extending charity. This cannot go on indefinitely. Believe me, people will soon tire of that! (This already adds insult to the injury of certain other deadbeat types who are already there and trying everybody's patience.) Any who are lurking here who expects to be a congregation mascot or supported clergy type person with their hand out is going to meet with a bad attitude. And, god forbid, one of these people has a haughty attitude and expects to extract "homage" from everybody! I can see them getting told off!!
Sadly, I even see a problem for people who employ them. Because they never dealt with the "world" they may imagine they are still in Bethel or in the Hall. They may expect to be cut "slack" and be given favors. They may prove to be a liability rather than an asset.
And if I hear the sickening phrase about how we should not forget how "faithful" they were one more time, I am going to get ill. What does that have to do with me or anybody else?? Bethel is the one who forgot them. They created the calamity.

[Even though I "retired" from the board I have to reply to this thread because it is my greatest issue.]It is a tragedy that an elderly person has been turned out into the cold. (I don't know all the details - did any of these people get a severance package?) I just can't believe they got nothing! While I would never rejoice over anybody's misfortune I am sure many of them were smug about the fact that they didn't have to be on the front lines like the rest of us. Well, now they have to.
I wonder, however, if the brother who made the callous remark about brothers who died on 9/11 is one of the ones who was let go. (In case nobody here heard, there was rumored to be somebody who made a remark about how "that's what they get for being at work and not out preaching...." or some words to that effect.) Really!
The problem with this situation is that they will try to pass the problem of these people onto the congregations. I am not active but I am angry nonetheless! Are they kidding?? People are lucky they can take care of themselves! The idea that they would be looking to persons like myself who work and were criticized for doing so is unforgivable and cannot be tolerated!
Do you know what the sick irony of this situation is? Even if I were active in the congregation, if I were ever to lose my job I would be the LAST person to get help! Why? Because I am not a pioneer. Only they deserve help, don't you know? This is the sick freakin' joke of it all. I am perceived as a "golden girl" because I have a job! People don't help someone they are jealous of.
Where the hell do they get off even imagining that somebody like me owes anybody anything? They shouldn't even be looking in my direction.
It is not that I have no compassion but I hope Jehovah finds these people a job.

remember apostates holding signs outside the convention?
by in a new york bethel minute ini remember there was one that used to go to my hall.
he would say hi to my dad and my dad would ignore him.
i know now that my father feels bad for that, but at the same time he had no choice.

I remember them years ago outside of the stadium and I was curious and asked around what it was all about. The answer I was given was that they were "apostates who were trying to make a name for themselves" or words to that effect, and that we shouldn't be curious because we wouldn't want anything to deprive us of our hope, etc.
The overall impression I got was that they were like somebody who got fired from a job like a disgruntled employee and was trying to get back at the boss.
Of course, I know better now.
