Crisis With Singles and Single Parents Looming?

likely we've all noticed that on the two major jw discussion forums the most active forums are the "singles or dating" forums.. it would appear that there is an increasingly large number of single parents appearing in the congregations these days for whatever reason.. i admire these ones for the effort they put forth to bring their children up taking on the role of both parents.

from many of their comments in the "singles " forums, it appears many find being a single parent an extreme liability in "the truth" as far as finding a mate goes.

i wonder if jw culture has something to do with how these ones are viewed as prospective marriage mates vs. the mentality in the "world".. as far the single people go, there appears to be almost a certain desperation to get married, further scaring off potential mates.

These people were on the fringes of the congregation like I was and I would chat with them.. Maybe a single brother who was a parent might be viewed a little more sympathetically - especially if he had something going for him.. But, a single sister (parent or not) had hardly anybody be friendly or sociable.. I doubt if this has changed.

I just saw a post on the first page of Reddit saying that somebody leaked those two shunning videos to another ex-JW site.

I was thinking that even if the religion were to ever soften or change its stand on shunning - what does that do for people who have been shunned for decades? People are not a light switch that can just be flicked on and off. Damage has been done and people have moved on.. Even if somebody forgave people who shunned them doesn’t mean they are going to have a relationship with them!

When I was studying with the JWs, I was assured everybody was ‘equal’. That’s what attracted me. Guess that was another lie too along with the one: ‘we have no clergy class’.🙄

If anybody tries to claim clergy/penitent privilege in a court of law, they are admitting and expecting to be treated like clergy. But, you won’t call a spade a spade and instead offer a lame analogy of employers and employees.

At NO time did I ever see myself as an employee of theirs when I was in the Jehovah’s Witness religion. I saw myself as a guest/sometime volunteer. Some might have seen me as only a seat warmer because I worked full-time at a secular job and didn’t pioneer.🤣 But that’s okay because I’m retired now.. The only accurate thing you pointed out is that JWs (pioneers) don’t get paid.. That’s a shame for people who busted their a$$ for decades in the religion’s ministry when they should have been holding down a decent job.

It’s not even so much as a ‘trust’ issue in perception for a small business. Nor do I think you are necessarily ‘old fashioned’ as some might say.

I think there is a reliability and sturdiness to landlines that’s not going to be there with something else. Oh, people will get used to anything if they have to. But, nobody even had to think twice or worry about their landline. People that are much younger don’t realize this. Listen, we have no choice but to deal with the new situation with the new technology.. But, it’s sad to have to say goodbye to landlines.

To All Those Keen To Tell Us About Their Beliefs

we seem to have had an influx of religiots - the people who want to tell us all about how we / the wts / whoever are wrong, wrong, wrong about everything and how right they are.

they obviously have special insight, or voices (probably voices, right?

) telling them the real truth.. as proof, there is inevitably a wall of random scripture references and quotes.. sorry, but we're not here for that.

Sorry to hurt any particular poster’s feelings but I agree with you about these overly long posts.. I don’t know how much work went into producing them, but, I also doubt anybody reads them!

Somebody’s overly long ‘cut n paste’ type of post isn’t the same as a person posting a long intro post or personal story.. Those are ‘readable’ if you’re in the mood.. But, those other ones? 🙄 Please..

I have been on the forum for a long time and I have seen posters who have come and gone post these extremely long posts that I doubt anybody attempted to read.

I would say, Yes, they do, but it’s an unpaid and plainclothes type.

I was raised Roman Catholic and when I ‘studied’ with the JWs they assured me ‘we don’t have a clergy class’ and I believed them.. But, it would appear they either lied through their teeth or else they didn’t understand what their religion was about. Maybe they thought if somebody wasn’t wearing purple robes they couldn’t possibly be clergy(?)

To me it seems the religion wants the luxury of having it both ways.

Curtailing zoom

look for the elders to implement changes.. also people at the door are so receptive and glad to see us.

I saw a post on Reddit in the past few days saying they are doing away with Zoom in a particular country which I can’t remember.

If this is true, I really do think it’s a possibility that this may happen here in the States in some fashion. If so, I know a couple of JWs who would be very upset if it does. They’ve gotten to the point that Zoom is it for them for several reasons: health and problematic personalities in the hall. They want no more drama in their lives and are tired of the garbage. After what they described, I’m Glad I’m Out because I’d never tolerate it.

SIMON:

I understand the copper wire technology is expensive to keep up with and is just about obsolete with fiber optics around.

But, landlines are liked by small businesses and some seniors and others who want things simple or have physical limitations and can’t handle a smart phone.. While I don’t have a landline now and it’s been gone for years, I do remember the reliability of it with no worries if the power went out.

What I do hope is that somebody will offer something at some point that can plug into a wall outlet (with a battery pack, etc.) so that people who don’t have computers can have the feel of their ‘landline’ (maybe something like this already exists (?)

had to take a break to get my chores caught up; last section: strengthen your love.

this implies that any jw had "real" love or knew what it was outside the wts definition.

many jws just perpetuate the type of love they were show in their congregation.

That was my quote about the sister who said ‘if JWs weren’t friendly now when it’s favorable season, what makes you think they’d be friendly or helpful during the GT?’

Both of us were working women who dealt with the unfriendliness and we both agreed that that we’d be out of luck if the Great Trib hit. We were on our own and we knew it. However, she tried harder than I did to ‘reach out’.. She got zero for her efforts. I knew it was a lost cause. Well, we are both retired now and I’m thankful I worked and didn’t care what critics said.. Don’t know if she’s in or not. But, I’m Glad I’m Out.

Advice to reduce hours earn less and spend more time on the ministry

the advice to reduce work and earn less to spend more time preaching has not aged well.. the cost of living crisis means many have more going out on necessities than they have coming in.. so many asked their employer to reduce their hours and refused promotion only to see their colleagues go up the ladder when they stayed lowly position with rubbish jobs thinking the end will be here soon.

next week midweek meeting is all about preparing for an economic crisis.. they say have a go bag and new advice for all jws to store food and water at home and grow a vegetable garden, i kid you not.

this is the new direction..

Thanks. Your post touched on everything.

I cannot believe the religion is still at this late date telling people they shouldn’t work, etc. The congregations are filled with needy people. The few remaining responsible people (most of whom are older) are going to pass away at some point. What then? A sea of needy grasping people - and a religion who promoted the faulty teachings with No social programs whatsoever??

The question is: who would choose to be around any of this dysfunction and desperation?.. I ran ages ago.
