  What do you know about philosophy?

  what do you know about philosophy and philosophers?

  i know many philosphers who were inspired by the bible in their writings, but .

  i'm more curious about the "secular" philosophers.

  I'm more curious about the "secular" philosophers. The old Greeks for instance Philosophied about morals. They were able to rationally

  derive morals without "devine" inspiration. This to me proves that morals are a product of humanity itself and not given to us by some

  divinity in the sky. Important Greek philosophers are; Socrates, Plato and Aristotle.

  Another thing about the old Greek philosphers is that they laid the groundwork for "real science". In fact they had the hypothesis

  of everything consisting of atoms before Christ was born, and almost 2000 years before this hypothesis was proven by

  phycisist/chemists/mathematicians. I'll see if I can dig up some more great accomplishments of philosopy, until then please leave your

  thoughts/knowledge on the topic

  Science and Philosophy have always have always been my "religion". I find it far more reliable yet less "black and white" than any religion. Though I'm aware of people who find peace in Christ and all that, I could never, being too rational a person.

  Is our society changing ........... becoming more religiously polarized?

  i realize that it's entirely possible that i'm seeing things from my own perspective only but i've noticed a increasingly powerful voice speaking for religious thoughts in world politics.

  are we seeing a return to a victorian age?

  am i just paranoid?

  Yeah, Fox-news is notorious even here in Europe for being very rightwing. I watch alot of CNN international though that I find pretty good. Though I don't know if it's diffrent from the CNN's in America itself. Is it? Do you have CNN international?

  So my concern about the state of US society is justified. That's what I think after reading this thread. It's rather alarming to an (european)outsider to see this happening to the most powerful country on earth...Though I'm really glad i can read American "dissident" opinions on this forum. All is not lost yet.

  I heard/saw on tellie the same NY scientist claiming that. Thought he was in California though. Anyway, I don't think this "Global dimming" is that significant that it will have a big impact in the future. I think it's still a controversial theory unlike global warming; Global warming is here to stay.

  Well, Robert, of course we will think of something but I think we'll have to have a sort of Great Depression first before things really start moving. Besides, the problems we have created over the last couple of generations or so are quite diffrent from any problem we as humanity have ever encountered. For the first time in History we are exceeding the natural carrying capacity of the entire planet. I don't think there's an easy way out of this. (or we should master nuclear fusion and all have foodreplicators or something)
