As I recall, the closest we ever got to "fun" was when there was an actual party and all the games had to have some sort of Bible theme to make them justifiable.

Fun family study? Tolerable?
by Gopher inwas there ever such at thing in jw families, or is this phrase oxymoronic?.
sometimes the meetings encouraged "variety" in family studies, assigning certain research projects to different family members, or setting up a bible reading as though it were a play.. none of that happened in my family.
it was just dry question-and-answer.

Although you may not practise any religion anymore do you......
by JH inalthough you may not practise any religion anymore do you still defend what the bible says to your best, when someone of another faith says something you know is completely false...

I have no interest in "correcting" anyone's personal beliefs anymore, but I'll still point out factual errors if they come up. I don't really care that much anymore, it's like correcting someone who says Mr Spock came from planet Krypton.

REALLY Think about it before you post
by avidbiblereader inthere is a lot of threads going back and forth both ways, almost like a battle line has been drawn between believers and atheists.
however, let's just say for the sake of argument, that all religions including the witnesses, are wrong but the bible in itself is right.. everything that it has foretold is going to happen and just as god told noah, in 7 more days i am going to make it rain, but this time he now speaks to all of us and says in just 7 more days i will wipe the earth clean of all those who have or are revolting/disagree against me.. how would you react then?
how would you live your next 7 days?

You know how much the elderly like to talk about the good ol' days?
Or the war. That could take a while... how many has he been in now?
"Lord, tell us the one about Jericho again!"

Try to filibuster my way out of it. "You're going to destroy all who disagree with you? Well that's great... but can you just explain once and for all exactly WHAT we're meant to be agreeing with? We've heard a million conflicting versions of what you supposedly require, so perhaps you could just set the record straight BEFORE you annihilate us?"

Are Jw's trained to be just plain mean spirited?
by AK - Jeff innot long ago, i would have defended them slightly with opinions about those 'under mind control' etc.
but the further i get from jw think, the more i believe that jw's are just plain mean and hateful asses!
two situations that i relate in my life.. 1- an elder i know works in a grocery store.

It's nothing peculiar to JWs. Do a Google search for the "Milgram Experiment". It turns out MOST people will obediently do hurtful things to others when someone in a position of apparent authority tells them to.

Latest Watchtower Changes
by Serg inthe following are some changes the wts plans to initiate starting 2008. in hearing about this i asked my wife why she thought they were doing these sudden and subtle changes, she had no answer and seemed clueless.
she still fully believes in the borg as opposed to me.
you can more than likely imagine why they are implimenting these changes.. 1. starting jan2008 there will be one watchtower mag.

Would be interesting for an explanation from a JW as to why the public talk now will only be a 1/2 hr.
The brothers have been struggling to stretch two minutes' worth of information into three quarters of an hour, so they are hoping this will make it a little easier on them.

Are YOU Being Brainwashed ? Public Talk MP3
by AlphaOmega inare you being brainwashed ?.
that was the title of a "public talk" given by brian steinblock of brooklyn bethel(monroe cong) it is a post-2000 talk.
this talk was e-mailed to me by a jw, and can be downloaded from here:.

I listened to every word of that talk, and I'm just amazed. I really don't know where to begin with this one. They've taken each brainwashing concept and literally turned it on its head so it's all from the viewpoint of the captor. I guess the only way to reason with them on this one would be to ask if the same principles apply to other religions. For example:
If a member of some OTHER religion is required to associate exclusively with that group but chooses not to, is the world "isolating" them from the group; or was it the group that was doing the isolating?
If a member of some OTHER religion is supposed to read only the group's own literature but chooses not to, is the world starving them with a "lean diet"; or was it the group that was doing the starving?

A Brief look at the "question box" September 2007 KM
by AK - Jeff inhere is the text of the box.
could someone please confirm that it is correct, as i garnered this cut and paste from a non-witness locale, and have no way to confirm that it has not been altered.. question box.
* does "the faithful and discreet slave" endorse independent groups of witnesses who meet together to engage in scriptural research or debate?matt.

I love it. "Does the faithful and discreet slave endorse ... ? No, it does not. AND YET..." In other words, unless we first approve something it should not happen. It's bad by default until we say otherwise.

Shepherding Calls
by R.F. inone thing that i really enjoyed taking part in was shepherding the flock.
i saw this as the perfect opportunity to really encourage others and help play a part in strengthening them.. however...... i started to despise giving shepherding calls.
the elders that i went with seemed to suck out any possible joy that both parties could receive from the visits.
-

On the receiving end... I only once received a visit from a couple of elders who said it was a "shepherding call". I dont't recall being particularly encouraged by it, I got the impression they were there just to size me up ("Do we keep bothering with this clown or not?" sort of thing)
