Reply on some good things in the organisation...
by Do I Stand Alone? inmy motivation was not to "recruit" for the watchtower society.
i thought i made it clear when i stated that i am no longer one of jehovah's witnesses anymore and that i am on your side.
however, the impression i am getting is that no one is really understanding what i am getting at.

A Challenge For FunkyDerek... My Experiences With The Afterlife
by FMZ inhey mate, don't mean to pick on you, but i know you are a good sport.
;) to all other non-believers, this thread is also for you..
it seems you always want proof and evidence of some kind of afterlife, but always have a "reasonable explanation" for any evidence put forth.

FMZ....
As far as your's or Sirona's experiences nothing anyone here says will change your minds. From all the posts here do you even slightly question the experience now? I imagine your answer is no...you believe. The power of belief is very strong. In the medical world we have the placebo effect. It's a very strong factor. Simply thinking you are taking meds to make you better is power enough for many. Both deju vu and jamais vu and many other mental tricks the mind plays can be affected with certain meds and brain disorders. Once upon a time these had mystical explanations. Without fully vetting Sirona's experience with a list of questions and postulations I cannot really comment. Of course at the end of the day she will still believe her experience and I will doubt her experience. Neither really benefits either one of us. I'll think she's a looney tune, and she'll think I'm a closed minded arsehole. ( Just kidding ) But you get my drift. It's like the creation / evolution argument....it's not going to get you anywhere and usually only makes people become more entrenched in their positions. -

long time sister told me yesterday that end would be here within 7 years!!
by PaNiCAtTaCk ini went to the meeting yesterday because the out of town speaker and his wife are good friends of my wife and i. after the meeting we got invited to someones house who was feeding the speaker because they know that we are friends and because ive missed lots of meetings in the last two months and my wife and i need a good love bombing!
well during our lunch i was complaining about my having braces at 30 and how stupid i looked with them and the 83 year old sisters house we were at told me that i wasted my money on them because the end would be here with 7 years anyway.
i asked her "do you really think so?

Katie....I was thinking the same thing myself. None of us would be so self absorbed to force the truth about "the truth" down this old timer's throat. But if she was Catholic the Borg would expose the Catholic church in a heartbeat saying...well it'd be best for her to know the truth before dying. A little common respect and compassion go a long way. I guess it just shows you us "wily poztates" have more compassion for our fellow human beings.

Tetra....afterlife is like afterbirth. It's the nasty, slimy remains of our lives after we kick the bucket. LOL

I guess the funny / sad thing is how many shows, magazines, and websites are dedicated to what these people do OFF STAGE. Obviously someone's buying / watching all these People, Entertainment Weekly, ET, Enquirer, Star, etc.... or they wouldn't publish them. We treat them like mini god's. And to the person that said to "accept the Emmy and get off the stage"...why are you watching that? You know what it's going to be.

Other Types of Abuse...
by RichieRich inanyone who regularly reads this site is well aware of the sexual abuse scandals amongst jw congregations worldwide.
(for those not familiar, visit www.silentlambs.org).
not to make light of those who were sexually abused, but i think there is an epedimic of other types of abuse in the org.. how many here have been, or know of, someone who was "spanked" regularly and excessively?

My friend's father would beat all the kids before they got into the car for a long car ride. He'd say "This is for what you are going to do". Of course he was an "new elder" too and held up as an "ideal" parent. I always thought he was a jackarse.

light skin: so much for intelligent design...
by googlemagoogle in... and evolution, by the way.
if we were designed by an intelligent creator, why the heck do we light-skinned people get burnt to death when the sun is shining?
not very intelligent design... .

Leslie Marmon Silko And it's a great book by the way. Good choice RR.
Also, I am married to a bi-racial Korean Irish boy. He's amazingly good looking. Bi-racial folks tend to get the best features from both races. -

What....I too thought your first comment was rather racist. Your second one cleared it up, but I still disagree with your assertion. I'm hoping that in another 50 years (maybe 75) that no thought will be given to what color someone is or is not. Two people fall in love and it doesn't matter if they are yellow, brown, pink, white, red, or black. They will simply be two people in love....how beautiful. ( I also am hoping this applies to sexuality. )

Philosophy - is it worth the bother?
by Abaddon ini fully admit to only having dabbled in the waters of philosophy up to now.
i kept on being put off by the smell... .
having said that, is there anyone more clued up than me about the subject who can tell me anything that might make me change my mind?.

Abaddon....
For me philosophy was my first "free thinking" excercise ever. In high school when I took an honors (college level) class it made me think outside of the box for the VERY first time. I knew what I believed and what I had been taught. My JW background made life black and white. Right and wrong. But having to understand the philosopher's point of view and write papers based on them made me challenge my belief system.
I'm not saying you need that now, as your debates and beliefs seem to be open for review. But that's why I still like it to this day.
Rene Decartes - Man in a Cave (or something like that) made me realize we are all victims of our surroundings and upbringing. This was the first "self aware" moment on my way to throwing off the yoke of the WTBS.
Besides I always enjoyed debating folks with one viewpoint vs. the other. It helped me formulate thoughts and ideas to convey via debate. And at the end of the day, it's unprovable and not "world ending". So you can debate calmly and decently without acrimony because it really doesn't matter. -

Funky..great post.
**Now, how about how many of you had a tall grandfather on your mother's side, in the military, who would be proud of you right now for becoming a father figure, who would be pissed at you for trying to pull someone away from what they loved, and who had two large dogs for which he was well known?
That could have been my grandfather. Or one of my uncles. Or great grandfather.
You WANT to believe therefore you are going to convince yourself.
