JWF - I don't think most of the friends who "helped" the overseers saw it as a bribe either - but I wonder how harsh a CO would be on a brother who just handed him a fat envelope? When I saw CO's they were all driving new society cars, wearing nice suits, shoes, etc. and I never for a minute thought that they were lacking financially. Call that the blindness of youth. As I got older, I learned better. Also, as I got older and tried to be "one of the sisters in the congregation" - no longer in the bloom of youth myself - I was subjected to the miserable woes of the women around me - including the COs wives. Just wondered if you all saw what I saw - I guess you did.

It was right about then that I saw a sister slip her an envelope of money!!! Boy was I shocked! In all my years, I never knew that went on. Boy was I naive!

What planted the seed of doubt that lead you to leave or think of leaving?
by NanaR ini've been thinking of this a lot lately.
the following experience ties my first doubt in with my present life.
as a backdrop to this, you should know that i was a 5th generation "raised in the truth" jw through my mother (her great-grandfather got "the truth" from pastor russell).

Years ago I remember studying with a young girl and encouraging her NOT to go to college because the generation that was to die before the end of the system was in their early 70s. (Fortunately, she didn't listen - went on to college and I think never joined the congregation.) Fast forward a few years and my family and I are sitting at an assembly and the brother (my PO) is giving a talk - explaining how our understanding of the generations is no longer the same! Everyone around me broke out in applause as I sat there in shock!!! I couldn't stop thinking, "How many people have I told this to?" "How many people do I owe apologies to?" And then I waited for the society's apology - I paid rapt attention to that talk - waiting for him to say something about how sorry THEY were! NOTHING! I remember getting in the car, turning to my husband and asking, "Did you hear what I heard?" I couldn't understand how the masses didn't get out of that what I had. It was pretty hard to ignore my previous doubts after it.

Patriotism...The American Flag...Pledge of Allegience...Are they Wrong???
by LuciousJ ini'm confused about the whole 'patriotic' do's & don'ts.
what is the real take on it....is it wrong to have anything patriotic?
is it wrong to say the 'pledge of allegiance'?

I live in America and I feel blessed to do so. I've always felt that way and I'm happy to be here. Having said that, there was always the need in me to be respectful to the flag as a symbol of the country.
But two years ago my father passed away. When he died, he had absolutely nothing. No money in the house, no savings, no insurance - nothing. It was a bad time all the way around for me as well. My husband had lost his job following 9-11 and we were struggling financially. Struggling like I had to borrow money to get to his state and try to make his arrangements. Anyway, I didn't know his situation until I got there and I'm sure you can imagine my surprise when the reality hit me. I had no money to bury him, etc. In the middle of my panic, I discovered that as a Vet, he had burial rights. The government stepped in and handled everything ! He had a beautiful ceremony, at a national cementary, complete with a 21 gun salute! I will NEVER forget that and whatever ambivilence I felt towards the goverment dissolved with their treatment of my father.
They folded his flag and placed it in my hands and I plan to display that flag (in a a commemorative box) in my living room forever.
