It was more fun watching Emmitt and Cheryl. Mario and Karina definitely were more "polished," but that's not all it takes. Although I did feel bad for them - they were genuinely stunned when they didn't win!

for some sort of structured and organized way of life.

I was raised in the truth - but I raised MYSELF in it. I was introduced to the witnesses by my adult sister (who was later DF'd), but I began studying at 8 - neither my mom or dad (divorced) were witnesses, and my father only offered mild resistance to it. My mother was so distraught over their breakup, that I think she welcomed the idea that I was getting involved in something that occupied so much time. (Plus how much harm is there in studying the bible, right?) Actually, I gloried in the fact that there was an adult paying so much attention to me at the time. Since the sister studying with me wasn't my mother, she couldn't impose things on me, she offered me choices, but of course encouraged me to do things the society's way. I got baptized at 13 - in 1976.
While I feel the fool for being duped, I can't have any anger towards my family, because I self-imposed the restrictions. I never had my parents telling the teacher "she can't participate" - I did it myself. I told them, "no thank you - I don't eat birthday cake." "Thank you for the invitation, but I don't go to birthday parties, celebrate christmas, etc."
The regrets I have are regrets of things that I gave up. But it is what it is. Interestingly though, I feel like this doesn't qualify me for either of the two listed categories. I wasn't really raised in the truth (i.e. there was nobody MAKING me go out in service, study, etc.), although I was there from childhood. And I was also looked at as a second-class witness, because I didn't have any family in the congregation either. When guest lists were being drawn up, not many remembered me. I constantly slipped through the cracks. I remember complaining about this to an elder when I was @ 16. He said he and his wife had always "meant to have me over." My response was, "and in four years you haven't managed to issue an invitation yet." Funny thing, they never did have me over.
Ohh well, that's the past - I'm free now!

Well, peach - there are all types here . . . like the logo says "everyone welcome" . . . however, the bulk of this site is geared towards sharing experiences and information about the organization of Jehovah's Witnesses. By virtue of it's existence, this site tends to bash JWs, but if you read through the bash you will understand the pain that many have suffered because of the requirements the organization demands of it's followers. There are some here who are still JW's. those who are not, as well as those who never were but are interested in the topic.
Grieving comes in stages, you will find those who are in the angry stage and hopefully those who are not can help them get through it. Some weren't angry before they got here, but after finding out information here have become angry. Not having experienced the organization and how destructive it has been to some, it would be difficult for you to understand.
Welcome and try not to prejudge. If you stay around long enough, you just might learn something.
Peace

Hamilton, welcome!
I'm curious. How did you happen upon this site?
Do yourself a favor - buy Ray Franz's book "Crisis of Conscience" - it's a long read, but the information is invaluable - what I most appreciated about it was his tone - it may help you get past the anger.

Ever met a CO's wife who was healthy and happy?
by Nellie ini just read another topic about cos and it got me thinking .
almost every single co's wife was sick and terribly unhappy.
i remember listening to them complain about not having a home, not having children, the accomodations of the friends, etc.

JWF - I don't think most of the friends who "helped" the overseers saw it as a bribe either - but I wonder how harsh a CO would be on a brother who just handed him a fat envelope? When I saw CO's they were all driving new society cars, wearing nice suits, shoes, etc. and I never for a minute thought that they were lacking financially. Call that the blindness of youth. As I got older, I learned better. Also, as I got older and tried to be "one of the sisters in the congregation" - no longer in the bloom of youth myself - I was subjected to the miserable woes of the women around me - including the COs wives. Just wondered if you all saw what I saw - I guess you did.

It was right about then that I saw a sister slip her an envelope of money!!! Boy was I shocked! In all my years, I never knew that went on. Boy was I naive!
