Can someone explain the generation change?

after being on here now for a little while, i decided to ask my mother this weekend about whether armageddon is still supposed to come before the generation of 1914 is gone.

so this leaves me a little confused- is this right, is this what they still teach?

or has something changed?

Steve2: It was an utter shock to me that these people who had put so much pressure on "interested" persons checking out the facts and to be totally honest when doing so, could themselves be so complacent about a significant (and convenient) change in a central teaching.

Exactly!

All my life I looked up to some in the congregation I thought were so "educated" and "intellectual" - it was hard for me to get the fact that THEY weren't having a problem with this! I began to doubt myself and my ability to reason out what I had heard and read!

I had to give myself permission to believe that I could be right and they could be wrong! That was the turning point for me.

I remember that this was a turning point for me too. The year prior to the change I had been conducting a study with a young girl who was about to go off to college. I remembered impressing upon her the urgency of the fact that "the generation" of 1914 was about to end and that that had to mean the end was imminent... As I sat there during the convention listening to them tell me that there was a "new understanding", excuse me "new light", I got sick to my stomach. I remember telling my husband that I felt like I owed her an apology. I was also floored at the fact that no one else seemed to get it! Same thing happened again with the NGO thing! It physically makes me sick!

i have been reading a lot here and there the past year about humanism, etc...and i am curious who else on this board that have left jwism has gone that route?.

it took me a few years, but this is where i am at now, and i have been looking into local groups in my area (dallas, tx) that meet together.

i will probably be going in september when the next meeting is.

Is this what dubs do on a convention night now??????

hi everyone.. there is a huge dub convention on this weekend where i live.

i can remember how spiritually full i felt on those weekends as i enjoyed a spritual banquet and an abubdance of spiritual food at jehovah's table, in the spiritual paradise, surrounded by spiritual people.

so what's going on these days???????

Wow Bliss! Sounds like a fun night! Nothing like that ever happened when we went out after a convention. But there was this one time ....

Picture this, I'm sitting at the table (there's like 30 of us) and some of the adults decided to have drinks (of course in moderation it's okay) and the drink that I want is ..... drumroll .... a "screaming orgasm" - you should have seen me trying to get the waiter to come closer so that I didn't have to say that out loud across the table. He looked at me as I was trying to find a "spiritually correct" term to use and fortunately knew what I wanted! My husband started laughing at me and those immediately around me started cracking up when they figured out what was going on! All I kept thinking was, "why ohh why don't I like beer?"

Do you have a 'canned' presentation for when you run into dubs?

when you're in the process of fading, especially in the early months, there's this constant fear (or at least uneasiness) that you will run into a jw every time you walk into a supermarket, department store, movie theater, etc.

i'm thinking the best way to deal with this concern is to prepare a "presentation" in advance -- a sentence or two, or some talking points, so that when it happens i don't have to wonder what i'm going to say.

the problem is, i keep changing the message in my head.

I remember running into an inactive witness about 20 years ago (I was still active then) and saying to him, "I haven't seen you in a while." He looked at me and said, "That's because I haven't been anywhere for you to see me!" I was so taken back because his comment seemed so harsh - i was geniunely surprised by his response.

Now, I'm the one who hasn't been seen in a while... and when I run into them, I smile - and greet them. No one has put me in the position to have to answer any questions. If it comes up, I plan on politely saying "I'm not attending anymore."

Biting the bullet is just the first step. And like any major life change, you will notice that your emotions can change not only from day to day, but also moment to moment. Congratulations on being brave enough to post. Many here share your anger - personally, I don't. But I've also found that there is a big difference in the org between a man vs. a woman's point of view. My husband is also inactive, and from time to time, his anger gets to him. Mostly, we are just enjoying life and coming to grips with where we're headed now.

Again, welcome - hope you find comfort and understanding here. You are not alone!

of all the holidays that witnesses shun, this was the one i could understand most.

but after leaving the organization, how do you feel about it now?

Wow! I feel like I opened up a can of worms.

Costumes, candy and friends does sound like fun. But I exit stage left when you add that dash of satanism!

Obviously, you can dress up in non-satanic costumes and try to make it all cute and cuddly. But I just don't know if I want the association.

I really enjoyed the comment that asked, "If I were never a JW, would I do it?" That's a great question - I think even if I were never a JW, I'd still be uncomfortable associating with satanic stuff. I guess I find this a little too close for comfort.

since being raised a jw, everything unexplainable has been attributed to demons.

I didn't read the original thread, but the reader's digest version of my story is that I did have an encounter with a demon when I was a little girl around 9. I had been studying for a few months, WAS NOT ASLEEP, and know to this day that it was VERY real. It gave me a healthy fear of them.

Actually, it was that experience that shaped my belief in God. I knew he must be real, because the demons are real.
