This reminds me of a friend of mine who was fired from his job because of sexual harrassment - Here's the harrassment: A woman co-worker overheard him having a conversation with another woman co-worker about the benefits of breastfeeding. Although the woman was not a part of the conversation, she was significantly disturbed by their conversation to report him and the corporation fired him. The good news - He sued them and got his job back with back pay. It took many months and lots of legal fees, but it was resolved.

What are JW's taught about friendships with worldlies?
by Worldly ini'm new to posting here, but i've been lurking for awhile trying to find out more about the jw life, as i have a dear friend who is a jw, but there are many things i don't understand about him, and how he treats our friendship.
i came right out and asked him once if it was true that he was not allowed to be friends with people outside of his religion, and he said "no, but we are encouraged to spend our time with "like-minded" people and that he had other friends besides me who weren't jw.
we met at work and seemed to be very close, but i've always felt some aloofness.

Welcome! I think Dave hit the nail on the head rather well. As a witness, we are told that "friendship with the world is emnity with God." I, however, could never accept this standard because I always thought that my mother (a non-witness) was one of the most spiritual and GOOD people I ever met. I could not accept that she was worthy of God's wrath. That mindset allowed me to have and make friends outside the organization - but I struggled with guilt about it from time-to-time. No doubt, your friend also has this same guilt and believes that the best thing for him to do is separate himself from you.
My advice, continue being his friend to the best of your ability. Apply the knowledge about the religion that you find here (but not necessarily share the fact that you've been here) and hope that he will find his path.
Earlier this year when I decided that I was through being a witness, I went to all my non-witness friends and explained to them my decision. While they supported me as a friend, I realized that they really didn't understand the significance of my decision. Whereas they are all different religions and freely welcome as friends, people of all religions (including me as a witness) - I had to tell them that as a practicing witness I was not supposed to have had THEM as MY friends. That allowing our relationship to develop to friendship had been a total act of rebellion on my part. Of course, they didn't know that and then could appreciate the place I had been in and then all that my decision meant. Curiously, none of my witness friends have continued to pursue my friendship.

The Watchtower's Unbalanced View of the Internet
by VM44 inin articles concerning the internet, some of which have been titled "a balanced view of the internet", the watchtower devotes the first paragraph or two to the benefits that the internet offers and has provided.
.
then for the rest of the article they go on and on about the dangers and evils of the internet.. they have been consistent in writing in this manner in all the articles they have written concerning the internet.. can the watchtower itself truly be said to have a "balanced" view of the internet?.

R6 - The other thing that cannot be overlooked are the comments that are made at the meeting discussions of these magazines. I remember about 2 1/2 years ago at a WT study discussing the internet someone commenting that "even off" viruses and demons could enter your computer. Needless to say, I rolled my eyes at the comment - but NO ONE corrected this person's viewpoint and I'm sure there are those who left the meeting believing this hogwash!

Man Sues Home Depot After Using Glue-Covered Toilet
BOULDER, Colo. (Nov. 3) - Home Depot was sued by a shopper who claims he got stuck to a restroom toilet seat because a prankster had smeared it with glue.
Bob Dougherty, 57, accused employees of ignoring his cries for help for about 15 minutes because they thought he was kidding.
"They left me there, going through all that stress," Dougherty told The (Boulder) Daily Camera. "They just let me rot."
The lawsuit, filed Friday, said Dougherty was recovering from heart bypass surgery and thought he was having a heart attack when he got stuck at the Louisville store on the day before Halloween 2003. A store employee who heard him calling for help informed the head clerk by radio, but the head clerk "believed it to be a hoax," the lawsuit said.
Home Depot spokeswoman Kathryn Gallagher said she could not comment on pending litigation.
The lawsuit said store officials called for an ambulance after about 15 minutes. Paramedics unbolted the toilet seat, and as they wheeled the "frightened and humiliated" Dougherty out of the store, he passed out.
The lawsuit said the toilet seat separated from his skin, leaving abrasions.
"This is not Home Depot's fault," he said. "But I am blaming them for letting me hang in there and just ignoring me."

Why DO you feel guilty? Because you choose to engage the "God-given" brain that God gave you? Remember that "free-moral agent" stuff we learned about? They were right, and as long as you remained chained to their "rules", it was all good. Once you start expressing that "god given, free-moral agent" abilitiy to question what the WT says, then you're wrong. God gave you a brain, and reasoning ability, so that you could engage your mind in reasonable thinking. If it doesn't seem reasonable to you, God gives you the right to question it and then CHOOSE not to believe or follow blindly.
Welcome to the Board. You are truly welcome here.

Christianity, Satan & Halloween
by Nellie inforget about being a witness - i never, ever understood how mainstream christian people could justify participating in a celebration that is so overtly satanic.
while i recognize the ability to dress up in non-satanic costumes, the participation aspect bothers me.
of course, now, my kids want to trick or treat, but i just can't bring myself to say "yes.

As always, I appreciate your comments.
Lonely - I wish I had seen the show! I appreciated the info on their site and spent quite some time looking at the other references too.
Once again I am amazed at how blindly I (and others I'm sure) accepted the explanations given for things from the GB, rather than researching myself to find the facts. I feel like someone from another planet, just arriving on earth, needing to learn all the customs of this planet. Hopefully, the day will come when I feel like I know what I'm doing! And don't worry, I know this is just the beginning . . .

About 2-3 years ago at the District Assembly it was said that voting was a matter of conscience. I'm sure it's been put in a WT somewhere. On the way home, I turned to my husband and said, "Did you hear what I heard?" Unbelievable!
It's also unbelievable to me that his parents let him play school sports! That is STILL a no-no!

Circumcision?
by jstalin indoes the wts have anything to say about circumcision?
is there an official doctrine?
-
Nellie
I agree that hygiene is not an issue in the debate - if an uncircumcised boy washes himself regularly, there is no more likelihood of an infection that if he were cut. And if a circumcised boy doesn't wash, he too can get an infection.
However, IMO - anyone who has ever been fortunate enough to "watch" an uncircumcised penis enlarge during foreplay would NEVER want to see it any other way. Just like men like to see a woman do a striptease dance, the unfolding of the glands is a beautiful thing to behold. I couldn't deny my son's future mates that pleasure!
