Double Standards
by seek2find inhi all, i've been thinking a lot lately about the chapter in coc where ray is talking about double standards and was wondering how many exist in the organization today.
one, that i've noticed is that employment issues seemed to be addressed differently depending on which congergation you are in.
for instance, in a congregation in one city, a brother might be removed from a position if he goes to work for a fire department or ems service because the shift work would require missing to many meetings, where as in another congergation you may have a respected elder that has such employment and everything is cool.

We were in one congregation in Connecticut where the brothers frowned on anyone who was an executive in business because it meant they could have to travel and/or miss meetings. The PO cleaned buildings for a living, one servant was a bricklayer and another collected the coins out of parking meters.
My husband always thought they were all losers!

Welcome Catfish - you're among friends!
Sasha - on this site you will find lots of "phrases" used to describe and/or taunt JWs - a few of the common ones are Hoho's, JDubs, Witlesses and Dubs just to name a few. You should understand, just use your "context clues."

This topic really hit home! Recently I called out one of my best friends - the kind of friend that you would get up at 3:00 in the morning because they needed to talk friend, the kind of friend that you would do just about anything for friend because I hadn't heard from them (both husband and wife) in almost a year. Mind you, we live 10 minutes away, and have both house and cell phones.
But anyway, my friend told me that the reason they hadn't been in contact was because they had "heard some things" about me and my husband! I had to pick myself up off the floor I was so shocked by the comment! If my BEST FRIENDS believe "something" they heard, what chance in hell do I have that the average joe-blow is gonna think the best of me?

It's when you don't expect to be SHUNNED...
by Ms. Whip in...that it hurts the most.
today, when i was walking into the grocery store entrance an old jw friend of mine was walking out.
it was one of those face to face akward moments where there's no way you can pretend the other person isn't there.

Isn't it just wonderful how they can choose to "mark" someone and "shun" them - all in the name of LOVE!

I'm not really sure what to say after reading all of that . . .
But this healing stuff, you're right, it is a process - and sometimes it hits you where it hurts. Breathe in, breathe out, cry, pray and rejoice that you have options.

WT desparate: Aug 15 WT- In Our Next Issue: When A Loved One Leaves Jehovah
by truthseeker inno, i don't have this article yet, it will appear in the sep 1, 2006 wt.
it may even be a wt study article.. in the august 15 watchtower, the box "in our next issue" has three forthcoming articles, and one of them is "when a loved one leaves jehovah".
of interest, it's not when a loved one leaves the society, it's jehovah.. will keep you posted.

Exactly Gary - THAT never made any sense to me.
I'm glad I could read this article - I was wondering what was in it. Now I know it's all MY fault that my best friend has dumped me.

When trying to talk to a JW what is the best method?
by omerp inif there is someone whom is a long time jw, how do you bring him back into reality or is that possible?
how do you make them reflect that it is possible that they are wrong about the bible track society?
anything you say they alway twist it around anyways with their prepared answers.

Watching the Dateline Show on child abuse in the witness organization was the first time I was able to listen to something negative - and hear it exactly for what it was - THE TRUTH. This show did an absolutely wonder job of explaining the procedures in the organization and shine the light on just how impossible it would be for a child molester to be properly punished for the crime. My husband, myself and my son watched it in awe - sat back and said "wow" - what now?
The only thing that bothered me then was hearing the organization referred to as a cult - it's another one of those trigger words - but fortunately, it didn't to turn me off from actually "hearing" what they had to say. I would recommend getting a copy of this show, if it's available, and having them watch it - of course, they may refuse because there's an "APOSTATE" on there. Apostates really are very dangerous people, they can open your eyes to the truth!

So....here's my story....
by CordyC inhey guys, it's me- cordy, again with my life story of being in the jws.
i've lived in new york city almost all of my life and have been associated with the jws way too long- since i was a little kid- 8 years old in 1987, plus my mom studied as early as 1983. my mom didn't get baptized until 1995 and i myself got baptized at the age of 17 iin 1996. i know we were probably on a list at some point as a "non-progressive" bible study since it took us so long to get baptized.
my mom and dad split in 1993 and that year was great because we were barely at meetings....then we got a shepherding call and my mom got sucked right back in.

Welcome to the Board.
One question: If you're gay, how would going to college have helped you get "married?"

Say it isn't so Josie - these parents of yours are Witnesses?
Too bad none of the congregation walked by and saw the commotion outside their house! That would've gotten a few tongues wagging!
Ohh and yes, welcome back - I wondered where sista-girl was ...
