I agree - this site has been life-altering for me. Just as I was beginning to second guess my doubts and feel guilty about leaving, I found it. I'm grateful everyday that I didn't spend too much energy on those feelings.

Nelly is an abbreviation of my name (that no one uses and therefore would not recognize me by).

Double Standards
by seek2find inhi all, i've been thinking a lot lately about the chapter in coc where ray is talking about double standards and was wondering how many exist in the organization today.
one, that i've noticed is that employment issues seemed to be addressed differently depending on which congergation you are in.
for instance, in a congregation in one city, a brother might be removed from a position if he goes to work for a fire department or ems service because the shift work would require missing to many meetings, where as in another congergation you may have a respected elder that has such employment and everything is cool.

We were in one congregation in Connecticut where the brothers frowned on anyone who was an executive in business because it meant they could have to travel and/or miss meetings. The PO cleaned buildings for a living, one servant was a bricklayer and another collected the coins out of parking meters.
My husband always thought they were all losers!

Welcome Catfish - you're among friends!
Sasha - on this site you will find lots of "phrases" used to describe and/or taunt JWs - a few of the common ones are Hoho's, JDubs, Witlesses and Dubs just to name a few. You should understand, just use your "context clues."

This topic really hit home! Recently I called out one of my best friends - the kind of friend that you would get up at 3:00 in the morning because they needed to talk friend, the kind of friend that you would do just about anything for friend because I hadn't heard from them (both husband and wife) in almost a year. Mind you, we live 10 minutes away, and have both house and cell phones.
But anyway, my friend told me that the reason they hadn't been in contact was because they had "heard some things" about me and my husband! I had to pick myself up off the floor I was so shocked by the comment! If my BEST FRIENDS believe "something" they heard, what chance in hell do I have that the average joe-blow is gonna think the best of me?

It's when you don't expect to be SHUNNED...
by Ms. Whip in...that it hurts the most.
today, when i was walking into the grocery store entrance an old jw friend of mine was walking out.
it was one of those face to face akward moments where there's no way you can pretend the other person isn't there.

Isn't it just wonderful how they can choose to "mark" someone and "shun" them - all in the name of LOVE!
