Kyrias story is a stand-out example of life as a JW, because of the deadly combination of things that went wrong. For me the funny became exhaustingly sad at about the halfway point, but that doesn't make it a bad book. She's describing a crazy life; it's not just the cult, there's also the massive family problem, some horrific incidents, the OCD... so I think she has an excuse to have been a loon of a kid and a self-centered young adult. I'm just glad she had the guts to publish it.
At most, the marriage exit plan was poorly executed, but as she says, in that world, in her head at that time, there was no choice. I think about her ex sometimes and hope that he is okay, or whatever he considers okay, since we only got her side of the story. He was also just a victim of a maniacal life, like so many of us were. I hope that he got it together.
Even if I hadn't liked the book, I'd be glad I bought it because I was able to contribute a few cents towards the KA rehabilitation fund. Kyria is so vibrant and creative - she's moved so far since then. I find her story inspiring, and I'm really grateful that she told it.

When will they realise that the bus isn't coming?
by eyeslice ini was still a kid and living at home at the time, and so that must have been well over 30 years ago, that i heard ron drage (now a senior member of the uk bethel) say "if you are waiting at the bus stop it, is better to be 10 minutes early rather than miss it".
what he was referring to of course was the then then 1975 issue; in other words armageddon has arrived yet but it just round the corner and we are a little early for it.. i don't know what brought this to my mind the other day but i got to thinking, surely if you are waiting for a bus and you get there 10 minutes early and it doesn't then turn up, how long do you wait?
10 minutes, 15 minutes, half an hour, an hour, two hours?

Maybe the bus changed route really quickly like a chariot with spherical wheels, and a new timetable wasn't ever published.
Most of them can happily get through life just waiting at the bus stop. Frankly, most of them are better off there than going through the trauma of changing transport providers so late in life.

The movie 'Doubt'
by sass_my_frass inthis has probably come up before but i thought it was worth suggesting: this movie is quite intense but meryl streep and philip hoffman are just magnificent (as always), and it really portrays what members of an organisation do when confronted with abuse.
the leaders of the church handle it internally, but if it's the leaders who are the perpetrators, what can be done?
it doesn't even occur to the members of the organisation to go to the police on their own; they trust the system they know.

"Too smart for your own good" was used a lot in my vicinity. I fell for it too. Clearly I wasn't that smart.

As a JW Did other Witnesses Annoy you by Condemning " Worldly Music" ?
by flipper ini know i got bothered by all the self righteous music police who would condemn me or others for our awesome record collections from early years as a teenager .
several experiences were really quite odd .
one brother came up to me saying i was wrong to listen to the moody blues " nights in white satin "!

I threw out some great CDs when I was baptised. A couple of years later I bought them all again.

With deep respect for what you're going through.... I hope that you have other things going on in your life, and lined up to cushion you from this one, so that you can put it behind you quickly. It's okay that it's gotten you for a time, but make sure it isn't the driving force of your life.

If it's true, I hope those guys are ok. It couldn't be easy to enter the workforce in a recession when you've been working for free all your life and none of your referees will ever talk to you again. Good luck to them!

Jehovah's Witnesses & their cynical lust for negativity
by jambon1 infor me this is one of the most hideous things about the jw's.. it's like they are willing on the next world disaster.
they are gleeful if anyone that they know comes into some sort of trouble if they are not following 'bible standards'.
they simply aren't interested in anything good.

Negativity certainly caught on to my mum and always my mum's daughter. I think a couple of my sibling let it bypass them but another couple went a bit down. I agree that it's top-led; anytime we heard a talk by a bethelite they were the angriest, crankiest old buggers who had no joy in their lives now that they were looking into death in the near future and they hadn't got what they wanted out of life. (Okay, that last sentence was probably drawing a long bow...)
