Crumpet: I haven't read The Night Listener yet nor have I seen the movie yet. I still have 3 books left of the tales of the city series to read although I do have them which are Babycakes, Significant Others and Sure of You but I do want to read them before Michael Tolliver Lives comes out this summer. I love the characters in Armistead Maupin's series.

Movies Better Than The Book
by littlerockguy inalthough it is sometimes hard to put so many elements of a novel into a 2 hour screenplay and motion picture and you end up reading the book and then watching the movie and wish they would have included stuff they left out.
however there are sometimes when you might watch the movie and end up more impressed with the movie and grown more attached to the movie than the book.
can you think of any movies you thought were better than the book it was based on?

My picks are Ordinary People and Tales of The City, although if I could probably name some more if I put more time into it but right now those stick out. Those movies along with others I have seen repeatedly and through the years during different times in my life as I grow and change I get something new out of those movies that I have never seen or thought about before; some of them work on so many different levels.

Songs that make you cry...
by El Kabong ini've been kind of sad the past few days for several reasons, but, there are certain songs that just cause the tears to flow whenever i hear them (and especially alone).
only time by enya.
i know that this song is often linked to the sept 11 attacks, but it really is just so hauntingly beautiful.

LadyLee:
That is an excellent parable! That reminds me of a book I read back in the late 90s called THE TIGHT WHITE COLLAR by the late Grace Metalious, the French Canadian writer of Peyton Place. The Tight White Collar actually is her first work and took her longer to write and she put more into the book than Peyton Place. Peyton Place was just her first published book. I used to have 2 copies but I am going to have to hunt them down from the people I loaned them to because they are hard to get hold off since just about all her books are out of print except Peyton Place. She only had about 4 books published because of her tragic death at the age of 39. If you could get a copy of it I would highly recommend it. She was such a gifted writer and that book will get you hooked just reading the first page. What is really interesting is learning about her life which makes reading her books more interesting.
Thanks for sharing the parable

Hiring a new fellow today and they must be white.
by hambeak inas some of you know i am a manager of an auto repair place that does it all.. the owner is ethiopian and hates blacks.
i had a great guy there who is black and did a great job.
the owner absolutely was rude and nasty to him calling him an animal and ordered him fired because he was slow in getting things done.. i am caught in the middle cuz i need my job to pay the bills so no more black or mexican workers just white folks even though most i have seen are not motivated or see something that has to be done so now i am a baby sitter and have to let them know what has to be done every minute of the day.. oh well such is the life working for foreigners here in the usa..

Ticket To Heaven has been out of print for a while and hard to get but it will be rereleased on DVD on April 3. There was a motion picture adaption of 1984 but I haven't seen it in years to really comment on it. The Village is a good one to break through cognitive dissonance but it depends on the individual watching it.

I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues
Don't wish it away
Don't look at it like it's forever
Between you and me I could honestly say
That things can only get better
And while I'm away
Dust out the demons inside
And it won't be long before you and me run
To the place in our hearts where we hide
And I guess that's why they call it the blues
Time on my hands could be time spent with you
Laughing like children, living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that's why they call it the blues
Just stare into space
Picture my face in your hands
Live for each second without hesitation
And never forget I'm your man
Wait on me girl
Cry in the night if it helps
But more than ever I simply love you
More than I love life itself -

"Be" love. For we must.

I read this on a blog online the other day and it is something I have to remind myself and keep in mind since it is so true.
"Something changed. It's the inability to be vulnerable... We have this great fear of being dependent... The inability to be vulnerable is the problem: it's the depth personality not the surface personality that has to fall in love."
...
Love requires vulnerability. Love is not a luxury. Love is a need. Love leads you to becoming dependent, not co-dependent, but needing someone in a way that feels uncomfortable according to our cultural standards. [note: even using the word dependent here seems strange - it's a word that seems more appropriate for tax returns than marriage, but perhaps that is my own bias. What word best expresses that deep bond?]
...
When we give of ourselves in an intimate way with another person, whether physical, emotional or spiritual, a bond is formed. I believe we can separate the physical from the other aspects of ourselves. Or at least we think we can. Love and sex divorce. We can seem to separate our bodies from our souls. Yet no matter what we do with our outsides, invisible imprints are left inside us. -

Abba's song about love parting ways; very melancholy
ABBA
"My Love My Life"
I've seen it on your face
Tells me more than any worn-out old phrase
So now we'll go separate ways
Never again we two
Never again, nothing I can do
Like an image passing by, my love, my life
In the mirror of your eyes, my love, my life
I can see it all so clearly
(See it all so clearly)
Answer me sincerely
(Answer me sincerely)
Was it a dream, a lie?
Like reflections of your mind, my love, my life
Are the words you try to find, my love, my life
But I know I don't possess you
So go away, God bless you
You are still my love and my life
Still my one and only
I've watched you look away
Tell me is it really so hard to say?
Oh, this has been my longest day
Sitting here close to you
Knowing that maybe tonight we're through
Like an image passing by, my love, my life
In the mirror of your eyes, my love, my life
I can see it all so clearly
(See it all so clearly)
Answer me sincerely
(Answer me sincerely)
Was it a dream, a lie?
Like reflections of your mind, my love, my life
Are the words you try to find, my love, my life
But I know I don't possess you
So go away, God bless you
You are still my love and my life
Yes I know I don't possess you
So go away, God bless you
You are still my love and my life
Still my one and onlyhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjRR3VdBS4E
And Cats in the Cradle by the late Harry Chapin. I cannot sing and finish that song without getting choked up
