So it is likely that he chose this? Could it have been done to him, as a sort of taking away privileges? He's not really the sort to give up power, but maybe he is having doubts. It's been so long, and buried, does that get announced to the congo?
I really want to know what is going on, and I'll have to wait until tomorrow.
Thanks for the help.

I just found out from my son that my father is not an elder anymore. He has no idea why. Of course I called home, but no one is there, probably at a meeting. I'm sort of stunned. What would happen to cause this? Is it a big deal?
of course there is the other question, why do I care? I doubt anyone can help me with that one, but can anyone give me some possible reasons for this step down the ladder? -

Need Help!!!
by TadSexington ini need help..... rather, my grandmother needs help..... okay... back story first..... i was (past tense emphasized) in the truth from the age of 4 until about 12 or so, when my parents divorced and my mother moved us halfway across country, and we eventually just stopped going to the meeting and practicing.... i'm not even going to get into how going from being a congregational poster boy (giving talks at since the age of 8, and all ways being the one out in service, having all the other parents say, "look at little brother 'sexington,' why cant you be more like him?
) would screw a kid up..... i'm almost 22 and haven't had a birthday party, and i'm still nervous about blood transfusions, and don't get me started about christmas........ i'm babbling on..... long short, most of my dad's side of the family is still the truth (except for him, which is kind of funny now that i think about it, seeing as he was the most gung ho one of us, being the ministerial servant, jockeying for elder status, forcing yours truly to make and deliver talks, and to kill every saturday and national holiday of my youth out in field service.).
jeez venting is nice..... but i'm going to try to stay on subject from here on out.... so, i'm in the midwest, and my dad's family is on the west coast, and about a month ago i get a call from my grandmother.

Welcome to the board TadSexington! Your post is another example of how messed up a family can get in this religion.
I know that the distance is making you feel like you can't be there for your grandmother. I understand. A long distance friend of mine recently had a break down. I found out that there was a lot I could do to give her support. I emailed, AND snail mailed every single day. I told her funny stories and sent her pictures to make her smile. (For instance I used the computer to put her face on a person sitting in an Italian cafe). The point was that she had a daily reminder that someone was there for her.
In my case I was also able to take one week off to visit her. It let me get a real look at how the situation was; was she maintaining herself, fuctioning? Did I need to find professional help?
I'm sure others here will also have great advice. Again, welcome, and let us know how it goes. -

It isn't easy to put my finger on, but it had something to do with my sense of justice. I didn't see justice being done. Not in the bible, not in the kingdom hall. I couldn't reconcile with it.

That's hard. There are plenty of bands that I know I'm probably going to buy, but the Internet and iTunes makes it possible for me to always listen before buying. It's habit at this point. Also, so many of my favorites have eventually put out a bad album...Ani Difranco, Counting Crows. So from my jaded perspective, I would only buy unheard if I absolutely could not find sound clips online.
M. Ward
He is fantastic. More people should know about him.

Paradise is hell

I agree that the "New System" I was raised to look forward to, now seems like a horrid place that I would never want to live in. Deciding that I would rather die then live forever in that place was certainly a step towards freedom from the borg, but I think that it is important not to get stuck in that phase (as I did). Choosing death over life is essentially suicide, and that's just not healthy.
gringojj, in addition to your line of reasoning here, please encourage your wife to learn more in hopes that her lingering fears will disappear in the light of reality. Don't let her make the same mistake I did.
I didn't really think the "Armageddon Survivor" was funny, or sad. Just terrifing. It reminded me of "A Handmaids Tale", one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing, Blondie. -

The saddest song you've ever heard
by littlerockguy inwhat is the saddest song that brings tears to your eyes just about every time you hear it?
mine is harry chapin's cats in the cradle

This post has made me terribly depressed, but I have to thank some of you for reminding me of songs that I had forgotten. "Wildfire" was a favorite of mine as a kid, and "Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word" has collected dust inside of my ipod.
Love "Passive" too, but maybe we need a angriest song post.
In the movie "Mulholland Dr." there is a version of the Roy Orbison classic "Crying" done acapella in Spanish by Rebekah Del Rio. It tears me up. I would have to give it the "Saddest song in the world" vote.
Other runners up include:
Patti Smith - Pissing in a River
Ani Difranco - Dilate
Alison Krauss & Union Station - It Doesn't Matter
Stereophonics - Rainbows and Pots of Gold
Tears for Fears - The Hurting (The whole album) -

The more the Governing Body warnsabout the dangers of the Internet the wors
by frankiespeakin inthe more the governing body warns about the dangers of the internet the worse it gets.
i think they are going to keep going in the direction of more and more warnings until everybody in jwsville sees the light.
-
ivy
They have as much chance of stopping the use of the internet as they have getting everyone to give up their cars. Kids are required to use the internet in school these days. They must be terrified knowing that all that information is right there, just a click away.
I question how seriously JW's are taking the warnings though. My father is an elder, and he uses the internet on a regular basis. (I won't tell you what sites I pulled up in his cache, because that's between him and his god). I didn't even know that they were warning against it until I joined the forum. -

the reasons why we leave makes a difference...
by littletree ini have a dilemma (did i spell dilemma correctly?
): i am the only person i know, of any of my former witness associates, who left because i started doubting/stopped believing the teachings.
i did research on the internet, read books, talked to people from different religions, etc.
-
ivy
I am a walk away believer. Those teachings are buried deep down in me, and getting rid of them isn't just a matter of someone pointing out a few inaccuracies. It's going to take time.
My decision to leave was due to a problem with the way god behaves, not the jws. I guess you could call it a morality issue. It took me years to realize that I couldn't just go on that way, believing that god is going to strike me down at any moment. So I joined this forum, and now I am finally starting to think that just maybe the jws don't have everything correct, and just maybe, if there is a creator to this world he's not the evil force that I have so much anger against.
I don't have any friends that are exjw. My friends are all "worldly" and I have always envied them because they didn't carry around such a heavy burden. I wish I did have exjw friends who could have shared their doubts with me.
I think that Charisma's experience with the friend that subtley introduced doubts and ideas is what I would have wanted. No, you can't force your friends to change their beliefs, but you might be able to help them. -

Commencement Exercises ??
by IT Support inwe received the following card in the mail today from a young us friend:
the senior class of xx high school announces the commencement exercise <at time> <at place>... .
she also enclosed in the envelope a couple of pretty photos of herself.

Commencement Exercises are just the graduation ceremony. You sit in a big room, listen to someone give an inspirational speech or two about the exciting future ahead of these potential-filled teenagers and wait while every single name is called up to take their diploma.
It's about as fun as an assembly, although shorter.
The idea is that the graduate has reached a milestone in life and friends and family are invited to commemorate the event.
