What's Your Favorite Brand of Beer?
by tfsm ini know this is slightly off-topic but i find alot of the discussion here somewhat depressing and most of it is far too cerebral for me.

When I went to Bethel I had a moustache. First day on the job the floor overseer drags me aside. You read whatever article it was in the magazine (I forget which). I say yes. Then he asks if I noticed the picture. The picture was a white scientist at a blackboard depicting evolution or something similar. In this elders mind, if you were white and had a moustache you believed in evolution. At that moment it occured to me that 1. I may have made a mistake in wanting to work here, and 2. this elder was a complete idiot, which I noticed time and time again with like minded elders like this guy.

That brings back memories... I still remember arriving at the 124 building and telling the guy at the reception desk, "reporting for duty" and getting a blank look along with this manual and told to read it.... right... thanks for posting this...

No pets here, but I've told people if I owned a dog and a cat I would name the dog "kittie" and the cat "doggie" to confuse the neighbors and visitors.....

Best, worst and weirdest assembly halls...
by Jamelle ina recent thread about the experience of attending the 1969 convention as a young child really started me thinking.
i have several fuzzy memories of assemblies i attended as very young child.
this got me onto the track of the rather odd, uncomfortable or even really cool buildings i have visited over the years as a result of those conventions.. so my questions to everyone are:.

The racetrack in Cicero, IL.
Went there for a DA. After arriving and seeing the facilities and saying, "you gotta be shittin' me" I left. There was no way I was going to agonize myself. Probably the worst facilities in the U.S. for DA use.

Anyone got any interesting stories on Albert Schroeder?
When I was at Bethel, Schroeder was one of the few GB members I liked. I think his having a son gave him a more a bit more realistic view, albeit just a bit more. His wife was my housekeeper for a while. A very nice woman from what interaction I had with her. I remember one time when Albert Schroeder came over to my room asking if I could do a favor for him. No atttitude about him the with I'm a GB member and I expect you to say yes.

When I was there, during the summer months there would be open seating, which meant I seldom would be there for breakfast. I'd show up afterwards to raid a few tables for food. Yep, summers meant sleeping in later.
As for those circular wash basins in the locker rrom. I remember a roomate telling a story when he walked into the locker room a new-boy was taking a leak in the wash basin. apparently the new-boy lived a overly sheltered life. After telling him thats what the urinal was for he moved to the correct target...while still peeing.... some guys...

Beards are evil, but do you know why?
by free2beme inas a witness, i knew several men who attempted to grow beards.
when they did, and attended meetings, it did not take long to be talked to by elders and told, "as spiritual men, they should not display an outward form of rebellion.
" why was this a form of rebellion?

At Bethel one guy grew a beard. He was exiled to the auto/truck repair shop from the factory office. Out of sight. I do not recall if he eventaully shaved it off or left... It did raise the issue of wearing a beard as has been touched by prior comments
Another guy I had heard about, new guy comes in with a moustache. The floor overseer pulls him aside and shows a picture in a then recent magazine. The picture is of a "bad' person with a moustache, which in this elders mind, if you had a moustache you were "bad". Unless you were black. White /w moustache bad, black /w moustache okay....

Did any of you head off to University after leaving the org
by yaddayadda inone of my biggest regrets is not getting a degree, due to the jw brain-washing against higher education.
i feel a strong sense of never having reached my academic potential and having been restricted in many ways by this.
i was a high achiever at high school + some teachers were bemused that i never went on to varsity.

Did any of you head off to University after leaving the org
...Before leaving.... Less than 90 days after leaving Bethel I started college and most of the elders in my then congregation thought it was a good idea for me to do so.
When I was at Bethel it was observed that the new guys that had college degrees prior to becoming JW's got the better jobs... a fact that was not lost when I left.
