Hi Peter! Do you have the keys to heaven and earth? We had a "little Paul" on another board that thought he did! How's it being named after one o them apostles?
Just tying to rescue you from the filly chat! There's horses, cats and all kinds of weird animals here so beware when liquid drinks are offered! Some are just "waiting" to lure you into their trance then like a lady black widow bite you where you don't wanta be bit!

Thanks all for your inquiries and concern. Actually, living in Haifa is far safer in the worst of times than living in LA, Chicago or even Seattle. Believe me, we can walk around any time of the night and never see a gang member, road rage doesn't exist and no one is stumbling out of a bar and being mugged for a buck. There is a saying that goes " In Jerusalem they pray, Tel Aviv they party and in Haifa they work".
The Jews, Arabs, Europeans, Russians of all religions get alone very well in Haifa and no one wants anything to do with the problems of the occupied territories. We don't stand out as there are thousands of different types here from all over the world and noone knows your religion or politics unless you tell them. Well there's an exception or two, the ones in suits and ties are the Baha'is and the ones with the fur hats or beanies are Jews and the ones with crosses on their necks are christians. Oh, and the ones hanging around the building with all the windows bricked up are the JW's!!

Circ,
Palistine (where Israel is a nation/state) is made up of an odd mixture of religous groups. The Arab Christians trace their ancestory all the way back to the original followers of Jesus. Then there are the Muslim Arabs, Persian Arabs, Persian Jews, Etheopian Jews, Jews from Russian, Armenia and Eastern Europe. By far the largest percentage are the "secular" Jews that practice no religious ceremonies and would be right there at the shopping mall on Friday night and all day Saturday if they were open.
Then you have the proseltyzing groups, mostly Christian groups trying to save the holy land for Jesus, other Jewish groups that claim to be Davidic and pure and detached from all the land issues. The Baha'is have their spiritual and administrative world head quarters in northern Israel and there are a few Orthodox Christians, Zoroasterians, Buddists and others.

Zep,
I hope I didn't come across as a full blown supporter of US and/or UN position in the Israeli/Palistinian conflict. Chomsky is correct in much of his analysis especially his sensitivity to the rampant racism both in America and here in Israel. The Israeli's are even racist within their own kind. The Etheopian Jews here can hardly eek out an existance. Treated like garbage, made to live in compounds that in America are only reserved for the Hatian refugees.
Plenty of incivility to go around. However, I still contend the US and western powers are not about to let Israel screw up their oil supply by going too far with their dirty little tactics of settlements in areas that were supposed to be handed back to Palistine. Add to that Mr. Arrafat has the propensity to set up his family with illegal gains so that when he goes they are well healed financially.
So it goes, the disfunctionality of materialistic politics. I'm still betting on some kind of concession to Palistine and a bigger one to Israel by the West before long.

Well sir,
Nothing is purely religious, or geopolitical, but it is the hardline conservative Jews that take literally the biblical reference to this being their land bequethed by God that are in my humble opinion, the cause of the problem. They have a guaranteed number of seats in the Kinnesset regardless of how small a percentage they are in the total polulation. Their power is linked to the diapora of Jews that finance their fanaticism.
Like most everything, the Palistinians have their radicals as well. The wild card here is mid east oil and Bill Clinton. I think his ego and American interest in oil will combine to do anything to get a peace accord. My guess? A significant concession by the US to both sides to seal a deal before Clinton ceases to become a lame duck and is a dead duck. 2001 will see a seminal agreement that will be the begining of the end of the religious state of Israel and eventually regional stability.

Hi Frenchy,
It seems to me you are asking the question to inforce the idea of personal literal resurrection. There are other possible ways of understanding "inherit the earth". One, it could be a collective inheritance in that humble, loving, nurturing and honest people will as humanity evolves (hope that word doesn't offend)replace the rapacious, agressive competitive types. I think you can see that process in play as we speak. It is becoming increasingly obvious that the masculine qualities no longer are effective in virtually all walks of life, other than making war, and are being modified by the inclusive, multi-cultural, multi-racial tolerant attitudes.
Setting in Israel, I can assure you the makers of war will not inherit this land for long term as the loosers would surely extend the conflict. Those that are willing to compromise, willing to see the other sides' perspective, those that are "peace makers" are "blessed" and inherit the earth.
This can also be looked at individually on spiritual level where the meek and humble in manner inherit or have the "kingdom within them". Perhaps another way of understanding sovereignty other than purely in a temporal way.
