Elsewhere you are so right, it is a problem the car dealers, but more the manufacturers(which nobody blames) have created. When you have 3 Toyota dealerhsips within 25 miles, thats where the problem starts. Just to let you know here in Mass there are laws against raping people on interest rates. We can only make 2 points on a loan i think, could be wrong. That doesnt mean some people dont get high rates, because if they have bad credit they do. The point is that with the internet now, you can figure out what is a fair price, go to your local dealer, and try and get it. But-If they cant give you the deal you want, ask them why dont just storm out. Alot of times the internet will give you options and pricing that may not be totally correct. So see if the saleperson can explain things to you, thats what they are there for.

I got lucky with that one!
Elsewhere,
You got lucky yes, but at the expense of the car dealership. Did you ever stop to think that the dealer probably lost thousands of dollars on your car? Now I am not saying you should go and pay them back, thats not how it works. But its a calculated risk when we trade in a car. Some you make some money, and some you lose. But there have to be some winners in order for us to stay in business. Everyone wants to rape the car dealer, but do they realize the big picture? If we lost money on every deal, we would go out of business. Then you would have to drive that much farther next time you want to rape the dealer, so will everyone else, soon he will go out. Then where do you get you service done? If people effectively cut out al the dealers there will be no place to buy cars and service them. What does that accomplish?

Elsewhere,
You traded you car in(sold it to the dealer) and a week later it burned to a cinder. Isnt that great to know you dont have to worry about that kind of stuff when you trade it in? Now, what would you do if you bought a car from a dealer and it started smoking? You would flip out and say the dealer was a scumbag.
Isnt it nice to know you can sell your car to the dealer and not be called a scumbag if it burns up a week later, but if a dealer sells a car and it burns a week later he is a scumbag. Great to have that type of immunity?
Have you ever lied to a car salesman?

What I am not able to do - when I go car shopping, is to see a price tag on the vehicle.
Some car dealers do not put prices on used cars and the reason is simple. A car dealer starts negotiation at market value, and that changes sometimes on a daily basis. For example, I would sell a Ford Expedition cheaper today than last fall. It will be worth more towards this winter. Many people go out to car lots after hours and if they see a price on a car and it hasnt been updated then they will never come back the next day if they think its too high, and it may be too high, but the market value is less. With the internet these days, everyone should be prepared when they go out shopping, if they know what they want.
New cars all have prices on them. The way it works is very simple, and its the same as all other business. If you buy a car for 15000 bucks, the dealer makes about 1000. I think thats very fair. If you are spending more money, and want more options, the dealer should make more money. The higher the cost, the more the mark-up. Again any business is like that. Do you think people try and bargain down the price on a 100,000 BMW? They know the dealer is making a good chunk on them, but its ok. I have sold 50,000 dollar vehicles, and made the same amount of money as selling a 13000 car. That isnt right. We are in SALES, and if I sell you all the benefits and features of the higher priced car, I should get paid for that. That is my job. I am not asking for any one to feel sorry for me, I just wanted to give you another perspective.
One thing that gets me, I am a very honest salesman. Many many times I have had customers lie to me. In the end I always tell them "Oh thats good. So I see you were lying to me, its better off that you bought somewhere else because I dont lie and I dont want to do business with liers. Have fun driving to such and such a town to have your service done. Good bye." I love to say that but I hate when I realize they wasted all my time.

Just for the record I am a Toyota car salesman. I find it very sad the situation that car dealerships have gotten themselves into. All it has done is made people not care about the car, options, value, and just be worried about price the whole time. My job is to slow the customer down, find the car they like, show them the car, make sure they like and want the car, and then make the deal. 75 percent of my customers are too concerned about price and dont care about the car. Often I get people who call me and say "how come my car doesnt have this option"? Its because all they cared about was price. I was trying to sell them the car, and all they were buying was a price. Its sad but what can I do. I hate people like the guy who said he wont buy from his local dealer. Theres nothing worse than spending time with someone who just goes and buys somewhere else. At the end of the day, my family has to eat, and I have to pay the bills. As a car salesman, I am an expert in my field. People come to my business to buy something between 10-60,000 dollars. Even at the lower end, its a huge purchase. The fact that someone will come in to see me and get all the info they want and then take my info down the street to the next dealer and buy there for 100 bucks less makes me sick. I often say "I sold you the car, but you bought it somewhere else". It happens. To the guy who wont buy from his local dealer, I hope you dont use thier service department. If you do your an asshole. The bottom line is, if you like the salesman, you like the car, and you like the dealership, just buy the car. Honestly you cant go wrong.
To the author of this thread:
A good salesman will never give a rate, it sets you up for disaster. When you ask a salesman what your rate will be, we dont know because rate is dependent on credit. You may say "well my credit is perfect". It may be, but if I say to you "OK then you will get 6 percent" and then the finance manager runs your credit and its not perfect, you get 10 percent, it causes a big problem in the finance office, and the deal may fall apart. We are salesmen, we sell cars, the loan is not our department. All you have to do is call your local bank and ask what the rates are, and what they can get you. Then you can ask the salesman if there are any subvented rates, and that he can tell you.
As far as dealer premiums on Priuses, we have that. The reason is simple, supply and demand. Remember MSRP is the suggested price. People seem to forget that and just think invoice is the price of the car. If the demand is high for a vehicle, we have every right to ask for more. Why should I sell one guy the car for 23000 when the next guy is willing to pay me 25000 for the same car? Id be a fool to sell it to the first guy. When I take a deposit on a Prius right now, there is a 4 to 6 week waiting period, I require a 2000 non-refundable deposit, and I tell the customer there is currently a 2000 dealer premium, and that is at current market conditions, and we will adjust accordingly. If there is a surplus of Priuses in 2 weeks, obviously I will not be charging a premium.
When all is said and done, car dealerships are a business. The goal of a business is to make money. If we dont make any money, we will go out of business. It is not wrong for us to make 1, 2, 3, even 4 thousand bucks on a car. If the customer is completely happy, then we have done our job well. Nobody goes into walmart and bargains down the price on a tv. You KNOW walmart is making money on the tv, but you are happy and you buy it. Thats all if anyone has any questions on car buying and whatnot just email me I would be glad to tell you what I know.

WTBTS: Do Not Mark Donations For Relief Efforts - Mark World Wide Work
by Honesty ini have just talked with the wtbts service department at 718-560-5000.. you can contribute for hurricane katrina relief efforts through your local kingdom hall and put your donation in the contribution box marked for the world wide work.
you may also send donations directly to the branch office... to the brooklyn address.
donations should be marked for the world wide work and not specificically reserved for relief efforts.

Watch CNN @ 8 PM EDST Tonght
by Honesty inlarry king hosts this special that details how viewers can help with the hurricane katrina relief efforts.
the red cross president is expected to be interviewed.. usually there is a viewer call-in portion on the program.
i wonder what the reaction would be if it was known that a non-profit organisation like the wtbts instructed people to mark their donations for the world wide work and not specifically for hurricane katrina relief efforts?
