Did you meet any con artist types there?
by LongHairGal init seemed to me that there were a number of con artist types of personalities i came across during my years there.
i am not referring to people who were actually doing anything illegal.
what i am referring to are people who were very adept at getting things out of other people.

Aaaah, let's see. I worked for an elder who had a cleaning business. The business was legitimate, but his management style was to kind of con people. He'd get them working for him and steadily ramp up their hours and responsibilities until they were working so much that it was hard to make meetings and things. If they complained it was like talking to a recording...you couldn't reason with him because he would simply ignore any arguments that he didn't like. He had circular logic down pat.
I remember one time he'd not put enough money in the payroll account and one poor girl's check bounced. She called because she'd gotten charged a fee by her bank when the check was returned and wanted reimbursement. He refused, saying that he wasn't responsible for fees her bank charged to her account. I couldn't believe it. I attempted to reason with him (we are talking like a whole $10 here), but he'd hem and haw and place the blame on the banking industry and even this employee. It was like talking to a stuffed monkey for all the sense he made. I tried discussing the matter with another brother who worked for him, and while I could tell he was troubled by our boss' questionable ethics, he would not come out and say anything. Unbelievable.
Another elder at another congregation brought a pyramid scheme back with him from Boca Raton where he and his wife wintered every year. He came across like he was only thinking of us lowly ones who didn't make much money...he just wanted to help, don't ya know. There were others with long distance schemes and other things too.
It always amazed me that so many JW's were on the lookout for something for nothing. I even know a few who played the lottery and justified it by saying that they would donate a sizeable portion of any winnings to the WTS.

The life of a confused, proud, ignorant JW youth.
by Daunt inthis is an email my sister receieved (i know im bad but she just left it running here how can you expect me not to) talking about the "dating scene" of jw youth, specifically girls.
we all know these guys... you'd think they'd change up their routine!
theocratic lookout .

Not sure how old your sis is, Daunt, but this looks fairly typical of young girls, JW or not. Group everybody into catagories, with yourself as a member of the "best" one.
I do find that JW courtship rituals are pretty unnatural and strange. All the females are supposed to be on the lookout for Brother MS/Elder-Material and how many of these guys are available? Seems that a guy just about has his pick of the crop which places the girls/ladies in pretty stiff competition with each other.

Why did you chose to join a cult?
by Gill inmany of us here were born into the jw cult and so had no real choice in life until we were much older.. however, those of you who actually chose to join the cult and be a jw, can you explain 'why' you wanted to believe 'the troof' that they claimed to have.
didn't it appear too good to be true?.
why would you want to put those kinds of restraints on your life and your mind?

Aaaah, that's it M.J. Thanks. LOL My memory seems to have blanked out on religious stuff over the last couple of years. Sometimes I have a hard time remembering even JW doctrine that was pounded into my head for almost two decades until I am reminded by reading various posts and things here.

I read or go to the movies. I'd like to start choosing more physically active type hobbies like bike riding or walking, but for some reason I feel odd about doing those things by myself.

this is ridiculous
by kittyeatzjdubs injehovah's witnesses as an organization have never covered up such a thing, and that is a bunch of ridiculous crap.
maybe you were molested, but you probably liked it.
anyone that does such a thing is removed from the congregation.

That was painful to read.

Does God speak directly to GB today?
by Bambie init's been 15 years since i was df'd, but i seem to recall as a jw that the belief was that the only human after adam that jehovah spoke directly to was jesus.. my question has to do with what the org.
teaches regarding modern day communication with jehovah.
it was my understand when i was a jw, that the gb does not say that jehovah speaks directly to them.

They speak out of both sides of their mouth by directly inferring that they are directed or at least influenced by Holy Spirit, but then denying it when cornered. The best of both worlds. They can ask for (and get) allegiance based on their being the FDS, but have an "out" when obvious mistakes are made.
I watch my father do this on a smaller scale here with the business. He hates to be held to anything, so he doesn't make policies as such. This often leads to confusion and the employees running to him to get "rulings" on various things....or they send all customers with questions about certain services, that we may or may not provide, to him because they know that if they (the employees) make a decision, he'll possibly get quite aggravated (depends on his mood on any given day).
This confusion discourages independant thinking and sets people up to be ready to accept blame or even complete 180 degree shifts. Its worked quite well for the WTS ...so far at least.

If I had known it was a cult I'm pretty sure I would have closed the door in their faces the first time they rang my doorbell. LOL Hell, even after being involved for 16-17 years and inactive for 3, I still didn't realize it was a cult....until I came here.
I was always interested in what mankind's purpose and destiny was. Don't know if growing up with the shadow of the Viet Nam War hanging ominously overhead had something to do with this or not, but what came after death was on my mind a lot from the time I was about 11 or so on. Did we go to a "heaven" or a "hell", did we go on to be born again as humans, forgetting our previous lives and hoping to improve until we graduated to.....? I was interested in mysticism, reading all about Edgar Casey and others who supposedly were in touch with the spirit realm. I didn't stress about these things, but I was very interested. I tried reading the Bible, but got pretty lost, especially in the Old Testament.
I grew up, got married and had kids and didn't have too much time to worry about this stuff much for a time. My marriage was pretty much crap from the beginning, but we (more like I) kept trying to pull it together for the next 9 years. I was finally coming to admit to myself that it was never going to work and that I needed to move on, which was very, very hard for me. I don't let go of anything easily or quickly.
I was miserable and searching for meaning in life when I saw a guy on TV, in a regular suit, sitting behind a desk, talking reasonably about the Bible...and actually explaining what stuff meant. I can't remember what the group is called now, but they are the ones with The Plain Truth magazine. I was impressed that they weren't crazy evangelical types screaming at their followers to repent with tears streaming down their faces or smacking people on the forehead declaring them healed in some dramatic display before begging for contributions. I would try to catch their half-hour show whenever I could, although there was some frustration with the way they always seemed to leave their explanations unfinished. They sure primed the pump, though, because when I first met the Witnesses, it was like I recognized them.
I'd just moved to Illinois from Alaska, and had just gotten settled in (alone...husband was still in Alaska and was scheduled to go straight from there to Georgia for Advanced Officer Training) when JW's knocked on my door. Here I was, lost, on my own with two young children, no friends in a new town, pretty sure I was about to be discarded by my husband, full of questions ....and they had answers. It was like finding water in the desert at the time. I didn't understand then that I was trading my freedom and my future for a utopian pipedream.

Please don't refer to your husband as...
by IronGland inhubby.
the term makes me nauseas.
carry on.

Hrm...well, I don't care for the term either, but "husband" or "spouse" sounds so formal. Got any good ideas for a substitute for "hubby"?

Ditto...what they said! LOL
