Saw 'The Exorcist' first time last night. You'll NEVER guess what happened!
by nicolaou innothing.. ten years ago i'd have chosen to have a limb amputated rather than let 'satan' into my head by watching such a 'demonic' movie.
well i watched it right through and i thought it was a good movie - if a little dated.
it finished just after midnight and i went straight to bed having turned all the lights out (and brushed my teeth .

I'm with Brooke, I'm not a scary movie fan (although I did mostly like Jurrasic Park lol).
Can't remember when the Exorcist came out, but I had no desire to try to see it. I did read the book, however. I stayed up until 2:30 in the morning finishing it and couldn't sleep that night at all. Had to leave a light on for the following week...ugh. Since then, I have avoided horror books as well as movies. LOL

LOL, vitty! When it's late and I'm tired and hungry, my willpower is usually at zero. I tend to want comfort food (like anything fried). I will eat fruit if I have it around (just bought some blueberries and Clementines...those little seedless oranges) or maybe vegetables ...if I have something to dip them in. Which reminds me that I should buy more celery and carrots.

New member - quick hello
by melmoth injust registered and thought i'd say hello.
been browsing the board here occasionally for a while, and thought i might want to join in now and then, so here i am.
for me, a lot of this brings up odd memories from long ago - though for many struggling in the jehovah's witless grip currently, it's clearly a lifeline and i wish it had been around when i was 'doing the fade' (as i've seen it referred to, and a great way to put it, btw) nearly 20 years ago.

Learning surprising things about the jws
by greendawn inafter you left the jws and entered your post wts era what sort of things did you learn about them that you found surprising?
there are some recent jws that haven't even heard of russell or even rutherford let alone of their objectionable conduct especially that of rutherford.
or they don't know anything about malawi and mexico, the ray franz incident and the witchhunt of the early 80's, or the organ transplant ban.
-

I knew very little about either C.T. Russell or "Judge" Rutherford. I found both of their histories disturbing.
I knew nothing about Malawi/Mexico.
I knew a little bit about the UN thing, but didn't really understand what it meant until I saw more information both here and at other sites. Cavorting with the wild beast anyone? Good going, FDS!
I hadn't watched the program on pedophiles within the organization...figured it was an isolated thing. Now I know better.
I didn't know about Ray Franz or about his books exposing what goes on at Bethel.
I was pretty blind and pretty brainwashed. Even after several years of inactivity, it took a real effort of will to start researching. I'm still stunned at how I fell for all of this. That's almost the worst part...that I'm not the person I thought I was.

First congregation I attended, I worked for one of the elders. He was an idiot. He'd grown up in the troof and was completely steeped in Watchtower logic and double speak. I'm not even sure he was capable of being honest with himself, let alone anyone else. He tended to lecture others in his public prayers and comments...very rarely did I ever hear an expression that related to himself and something he needed to improve on.
The PO of this congregation was a rather judgmental, punitive, old boys club sort of guy. He allowed the above elder to abuse people and make a mockery of supposed JW values in his business dealings and never (to my knowledge) did anything to curb this moron.
Another elder hated going out in service and avoided it whenever possible (I sympathized). In other ways it seemed like he was a hospitible person and concerned for the fatherless boys in the congregation. It later came to light that for all his concern for other people's kids, he was abusive towards his stepsons.
I never got to know the other elders well enough to form an opinion much. Fact is, they were just men. Some were good, kind people trying their best, and others were petty dictators in love with the little bit of power and prestige that being an elder afforded them.

Ham Sandwich.
by Blueblades infor centuries the catholic church stated that it was a mortal sin to eat meat on fridays, which theoretically meant that anyone who intentionally ate a ham sandwich on a friday and died thereafter was sent to hell for an eternity.
now, centuries later, rational, logical and appropiate changes were made by the church to make teachings ( like the other one on st. christopher ) reflect the different epistemology and ontology and changing circumstances of the times.
sound familiar?

I'll bet there are Catholics who aren't pleased that this has changed.
I knew of one guy who was so pissed off that his church wasn't doing a Latin mass any more that he caused a ruckas and left off training to be a monk. I guess it's okay if you actually understand Latin, but are there many Catholics nowadays who do?
I'd think that repealing the no-meat on Fridays thing would make life a lot easier, but then people do love their little traditions.
