You've just jogged my mind about an episode of Kavanagh Q.C. (love that series) called ''Bearing Witness', where a 13 year old (JW) lad is in hospital refusing a blood transfusion. If you haven't seen it, it makes very uncomfortable viewing (in my opinion). The mother is constantly carrying her copy of the NWT. I won't spoil the ending for you, lol.

They Don't Know dubs
by Farkel init's interesting how dubs are portrayed in tv shows.
what's interesting is how little the people who write those scripts know about the religion.
i'll give two examples and then solicit others you folks may recall.. the first example comes from the pilot episode of the tv series "lie to me.

When did the religion become a cult?
by Hermano inam i wrong in believing it was rutherford who took the religion from strange to cult?
under russell they had some strange beliefs but strange beliefs don't make a cult.
wasn't it rutherford who established and reinforced the hierarchichal structure and demanded absolute loyalty?.

I think it was 'born' a cult (as NVR2L8 said) - ''Russellites'' - so from the start members followed the direction and beliefs of one man who used the Bible in conjunction with his personal beliefs (eg., pyramids). The 'Truth' cannot evolve from a lie - instead it develops gathering more cult traits, eg., shunning

Waterspout - I don't think it's cricket for your nine year old's (a minor) name to be on any 'list' available for public viewing. Also, to label someone 'homosexual' as if it's a crime is inciting hatred and I think they're on very dodgy ground there.

Eric Sykes has died, one of the unrecognised comedy greats.
by Phizzy inthis thread is for those on the uk side of the pond, i guess our friends in the u.s would not have been exposed to the comedy genius of eric.. i say "unrecognised" in the thread title with recognition that many many people here in the u.k had great affection for eric and did appreciate his prodigious talent, but i still feel it would have been good if he had received even more in the of the way of approbation and appreciation in his lifetime.. r.i.p eric, you were one of a kind..

100% agree. He was a great character, very much loved by all accounts. Didn't he 'write' ''The Plank''?

Ten Years From Now .......
by Phizzy inwhat with the very low baptism rate, many leaving, many waking up and staying in for now, but not "zealous" any more, the wt/jw religion/scam is without doubt moribund.. i do not foresee a sudden end to the wt but what will it look llike in ten years time ??.
the late teens/early twenty year olds of today will i think be very thin on the ground as 30 year old jw's, so my view is that in ten years time it will be mainly old hardcore ones ,50 yr old and up, and even they will be aware that the org.
is dying..

I think it can go one of two ways. It appears that (in recent years) the Org has grown in numbers (mainly, I imagine, by breeding dubs and more 'converts' from developing countries - I would like to see what the 'shift' in statistics is). My CURRENT thinking (which could change overnight, lol) is that if scandals with widespread reporting continue, then a larger divide will develop between JWs and 'normal' Society. More of a separation - which the WT will encourage as 'no part of World' - but in reality, to prevent risking hard-core R&F (the consistent donors) coming into contact with too much adverse information. If publicity against the WT starts to threaten its credibilty, a 'good move' would be for the FDS to stop the preaching - without giving any reason, of course - this will 'plant the seed' that the End is close (and will draw the R&F into a tighter group). The preaching work could then restart at anytime (''we never said the end was close'' - 1975, anyone?). R&F would still then believe something is imminent, making up their own explanations.

Sparlock has a different name in some other languages
by cedars ini know for a fact that our beloved hero sparlock has been given a different name in at least one other language version of the "become jehovah's friend" dvd.
caleb has also been given a different name in the same video.
obviously it makes a degree of sense to rename caleb according to names that are common in various different countries.

That's exactly what I thought Open Mind - both parts of the name 'mean' something. So children will automatically 'respond' to 'sparring' and 'wizards'.

Ah yes, the connotations! No, the new name carries no "magical" connotations in our local language to my knowledge.
You are such a TEASE, lol
