  Poor Witnesses

  my mum managed to secure a reasonable paying job, it asked that she worked basically full time till the new year because the place has just opened but it would give her a pension (instead of trying to live off a small state pension) when she is older, and there are a few nice 'perks' including staff discounts.. well, despite her managing to get the job while many failed to secure a position, and managing to get through the different interviews and processes she will now drop the job, before she even does the training, yet alone starting it because the wife of an elder on the phone convinced her to take up her daughters 'ironing round' and also give herself more free time, for jehoover things - although she mentioned my mums health and asked if she had energy to do that.. anyway, while i was sat next to mum she said "yeh, i can't see this system lasting much longer" - a stupid gambol i think, its all based on chance.. i shouted at her after, i said why are you doing this?

  you need to secure your future, because you don't know what might go wrong with this ironing round thingy and its going to mean travelling to peoples homes, you may lose customers and not gain them, and then i asked how long she's known about 'the witnesses' and we worked out, that since 1985 to now, she came from being disfellowshipped in 1996, meaning for at least 10 years she has been waiting for this end of the system...a long time eh?.

  I called my dad after we sold our house. We had some equity left, enough I figured to last my family a few years, even if I quit my job, so my wife and I could pioneer.

  He, also being a JW, said, "Hold on, son. Your family comes first. Let ones with less responsibility do that." Turned out to be good advice. The year was --

  Serendipity -- Also, alternative service became acceptable in the 90's.
  Yes, a great flip-flop. Terry spent some 3 years behind bars for that in the 60's. We should ask him if he ever got a letter of apology from the elders or the GB. I suspect we all know the answer to that one.

  Stephanus, whether mortal or venial is a good question. Worldly Andre sounds as if he has first hand knowledge of that. Here's what a Catholic Wiki entry says, "...As a consequence, the law of abstinence embodies a serious obligation whose transgression, objectively considered, ordinarily involves a mortal sin."

  Much of my JW time was in New Bedford, Massachusetts, a Catholic dominated city. I was a Catholic turned JW.

  Recall that prior to Vatican Council II it was a Catholic sin to eat meat on Fridays. Some of us loved to get Catholics at the door and rub their noses in that teaching change with wise-ass questions. We'd capitalize on that teaching that those who deliberately ate meat on Friday committed a 'mortal sin', before a certain date, went to hell. After that date, those same type people would go to heaven.

  Then, several things changed with us (the JW's at that time). There was that change in 1962 where their was a flip-flop on the Superior Authorities teaching. About that same time, smoking, which was frowned up became a disfellowshipping offense. These things, and more, used to bother me when I'd go to the door, fearing that someone would rub my nose in our flip-flops -- just like I'd done to the Catholics.

  Just a mistake -- the great alibi

  have you ever noticed when the wt changes a teaching and gets criticized for it, they say "it was only a mistake", or "we're only human"?.

  why is it their false teachings are mistakes and teachings of other religions are falsehoods and wicked lies.

  is a mistake as bad as a lie?

  Have you ever noticed when the WT changes a teaching and gets criticized for it, they say "It was only a mistake" , or "we're only human"?
  Why is it their false teachings are mistakes and teachings of other religions are falsehoods and wicked lies.
  Is a mistake as bad as a lie?
  My momma told me, "There's no such thing as an honest lie".

  it's been awhile since i've been out but i seem to recall that jesus returned to his temple in 1919 (or 1918?

  ) and at that time, the most reliable servant he could entrust with his belongings were those embodied by those under rutherford's watchful eye.

  at that time he found them immersed in pyramidology, they believed in the cross, and a list of other teachings they would rather leave buried ("damn that internet!").

  Hmmm ... I just got back from Reexamine.org. There is a precious download page (actually, 23 pages) with some great stuff, much of it old.

  I tried to download "Our Lord's Return", the only publication listed there from 1919 but got the "can't find" (or such) message.

  That said, it is still a great site and a good replacement for our friend Quotes. I have more questions about that site and if anyone knows the administrator, would you please have him PM me? I understand that person may not wish to divulge identity (for obvious reasons) so perhaps you can choose some in-between member on this forum and have that person serve as mediator for our email exchanges.

  For example, the organization had proclaimed that Jesus had returned invisibly in 1874 up until 1943, when the date changed to 1914. Even their own publications refer to this change of dates. The book continues by describing 48 teachings that have changed since "Jesus appointed the Watchtower Society as God's organization. " If Jesus really had selected the Watchtower on the basis of their teaching down till 1919, then He would be very upset that they have subsequently changed all those 48 teachings since.
