this is one of the things i felt could get really petty in the congregation i attended, sometimes over the top, in my opinion.. one time a group of us sisters went on a shopping trip.
the driver was knocking herself out trying to find some "decent" music on the radio.
finally gave up and put a john mellencamp tape in.

when we were once jehovah's witnesses , and after we left jehovah's witnesses, this organization controls it's rank and file members to view themselves as " temporary residents" who are waiting for a better world to live in the future , and are told to not put too much faith or stock in this world because it has nothing to offer them .
in this way the watchtower society controls the individual witnesses view of living towards the future, but not for today - in the real world.
ways that the watchtower society does this is as follows .
Great Thread Mr. Flipper. That list is perfect.
I don't have any ans. either, I just know that for me.... personal tragedy & "Time Away" from the congregation, and the daily mantra, allowed reality to set in.
I do remember when my Study Conductor was telling me the "Wonders of Paradise"... I looked at her and said... "You people don't live in the real world do you ?" And she responded by saying... "No, xxxxxxx, you're the one thats not living in the real world."
Can't believe a year later... I bought into that.

Wow, MsDucket....
I don't blame you one bit..!! There would have been "Hell" to pay, if I'd seen one of them smacking on my babies... So glad you and your Hubby were united in that situation. I do believe "ALL" my worldly words would have come back to me in a heart beat...!!!!
Both of your daughters are Jws'... odd how things work out........

It mae me feel good because I hate having to hear about how others might be stumbled. To me, whenever I saw something 'stumbling' i saw something rather 'human'.
I agree Saywhat29... Concerning the small petty actions that some said they were stumbled over.
When I saw something out of the ordinary... I saw people being "Human"... I certainly didn't get all freaked out over it and run to the Elders concerned about my faith...
jws are so concerned about "gnat" things and overlook the really important things such as not reporting pedophiles, using "fractions" of blood, etc.
So true Blondie...

being raised in a fairly prominent witness family was a challenge for me growing up .
my dad was city overseer for 30 years in the same city .
older brother in bethel for 8 years, has been an elder 35 years , an older sister who went to gilead school and regular pioneered for years .
The word, " privilege" ... makes me cringe..!! We heard it so much. As you said Mr. Flipper, it was a " privilege" to clean toliets.
A " privilege" to vacuum the hall, feed the speaker, mow the grass, etc, etc, etc.... We were "USED"...as free labor. They could have had some of this done, just as you mentioned.
I was never coerced, so to speak, into these things, but if you were not doing your part, you were made to feel guilty. And treated as such.
The only thing I was coerced into doing, was aux. pioneering, so much so, that the Elder that pushed me so hard called the next day to apologize and offered to take my name off the list. Can you imagine that...!! I went ahead and did it anyway.

Thank You, Mr. Flipper... you are always such an encouragement.
I can totally see how the "Bigger Issues" ...can, and rightly do, stumble people. I am glad you stuck to your guns and did things the way you saw fit to do...
I guess, I was mainly referring to the small petty things that happen. I am beginning to believe the Elders were just throwing the word "stumbled" around as a scare tactic...or at least, trying to instill guilt on my part ...for thinking on my own.
Great replies, everyone........So good to see I wasn't the only one experiencing such nonsense..

I always thought the whole concept was pretty silly. If this is 'The Truth', how can it be so easy for anyone to fall away, whether it be someone else's actions, the internet, or whatever?
I agree Robert7... if their faith is so shallow... it wasn't much to begin with. I certainly never felt the need to give up my "then" faith over a pair of shoes someone may have worn. Just so picky.
Also agree with others, looking back, it was "Control" to the max. I was just too blind to see, and these little things built into major resentment towards them on my part.
Nomoreguilt, .... He hummed the "National Anthem".... that is unreal...lol
Voideater, My Point exactly. Couldn't agree more.

One time a group of us sisters went on a shopping trip. The driver was knocking herself out trying to find some "decent" music on the radio. Finally gave up and put a John Mellencamp tape in. (which I love). Later that evening she called and wanted to apologize for allowing the song "Jack and Diane" to play thru. She called everyone in the group. She was so afraid she had "stumbled one of us. Personally I thought it was ridiculous...and hadn't given it a thought.
As for myself, I had a 4" by 4" decal on the rear window of my car, that had my brother's race car number on it. I was told by an Elder that some were "stumbled" by it and I would have to remove it. I thought, " This is BS"... I am proud of my brother and his racing accomplishments, but I removed it anyway...
Another time I got counsled because I wore tennis shoes from my car to my seat at the DC...we had a long walk, with lots to carry plus an active 2 year old. It was just easier. "BUT" some were stumbled. Said I looked too Churchy. I changed into heels as soon as I got to my seat... What was the Freaking Big Deal...how asinine can you get.
So, was just wondering ... Were any of you ever "REALLY" effected by such small things, to the point you felt "Stumbled" ?

greetings, my friends:.
the above question is not in regard to one's weight.
that would be a rude question .... in terms of your jw experience, have the losses you've suffered been offset by the good you've gained?.
Absolutely...!! I have no family in or associated with the witnesses, therefore NOTHING to leave behind.
I gained my entire "wordly" family back into my life, along with getting to share in their interests. I regret the 13 years that I missed out on.
I have also gained my freedom, thinking ability, and desire to Live....

i leave for work later now than i did for many years - i now leave the house at 3:30 am for work.
it is very dark of course.
sunday morning - about 2 miles south of my home, i was traveling a state hi-way, good, dry conditions, probably right at the limit - 55 mph.
Amazing ...!!! So glad that you are okay.
