Watchtower contempt for higher education http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/7/136879/1.ashx This is from Saturday afternoon program. The speaker first starts with what he called the "alphabet soup" of degrees....A.A., B.A., M.A., Ph.D., etc.; he said they were nothing more than "sheepskins on the wall." One of his closing comments was that at Armageddon, educated people will be able to add a few more letters after their names...D.E.A.D. ....ah...yes, everyone laughed and clapped. How very Christian. http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/133804/1.ashx JWD long piece by Barbara Anderson
"A MIND is a TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE"
Yes,indeed anyone (USA), my age (49) grew up with this TV ad slogan from the:United Negro college fund.
It drives home the point how much normal worldly people appreciate the value of higher education.
By the same degree that non-JW's promote a college degree the Watchtower cult has despised it.
To the Watchtower defender:
Show us "proof" in their own publications of the Watchtower encouraging higher education.
Yes,the Watchtower cult wants their followers to be uneducated passive dumb sheep, they denounce worldly and "independent thinking" at every church service.
Just like they are rabid against the free flow of information on the Internet (like I'm posting right now) they don't want their followers to be 'enlightened' by higher education.
In 1984 a 19 y.o. publisher from the Rockland Massachusetts Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses was granted 'exemption' from the elders to attend a 2 year stint at the New England school of broadcasting.
I can remember this clearly and there was even a service meeting talk on how exceptions could be made in this 'special case' because the boy's unbelieving worldly father demanded it.
Anyone who has been a JW for decades like myself knows that college education was a defiant act which surely would get you sanctioned by the congregation.
We had a popular slogan called the "13 year plan" which was 12 years of public school which could include the vocational 'trade' schools, then one year of regular pioneering THEN you could get married.
Anyone who didn't abide by theses rules was less than exemplary.
"Less than exemplary" was a code word for congregation sluggard.
Now that the Watchtower is in dire straits for cheating millions of followers out of higher education with the "deliverance is at hand" slogan (still the 2006 district convention theme) the Watchtower is using apologist to discredit old timers who have been there.
Worldly secular statistics show the UU Unitarian universalism church as the most educated at 55% of members with a college degree and the Jehovah's Witnesses at 5%. The Watchtower NOW has lessened up the restrictions as the 'new system' is on hold and the younger JW generation won't tolerate the janitorial jobs of their parents.
Although they have recently changed their policy so that at least a technical education is now seen as appropriate, the vast majority of Witnesses still have a high school education or less, and any change in their education level will take years before it has any effect on the Society. Only 4.7 percent have been to college compared to over 49.5 percent for Unitarians 46.7 for Jews and 39.3 percent for Episcopalians (Kosmin and Lackman, 1993).
This DUMB DUB phenomena is consistent with the destructive cult practice of "Milieu Control" to keep it's members dumb 'barefoot N pregnant'
In 33 years of active Jehovah's Witnesses contacts 1957-1992 among thousands of members,I found a college education is probably slightly less common than a military record.
Remember that JW's totally shun military service,so anyone who had been in the army (same with college) would have been an adult new recruit and not 'born in' like me. -

Province denied parents fair hearing, lawyers say
Globe and Mail, Canada - 1 6 minutes ago
VANCOUVER -- The government was in such a rush to give transfusions to premature sextuplets last January that it denied the Jehovah's Witness parents their IN COURT: THE SEXTUPLETSProvince denied parents fair hearing, lawyers say
Jehovah's Witnesses say state seizure of babies for blood transfusions 'didn't meet principles of fundamental justice'
VANCOUVER -- The government was in such a rush to give transfusions to premature sextuplets last January that it denied the Jehovah's Witness parents their right to a fair judicial hearing, the Supreme Court of British Columbia was told yesterday. Lawyers for the Fraser Valley parents, who can't be identified because of a publication ban, are asking Chief Justice Donald Brenner to make a ruling that the process followed by the B.C. Ministry of Children and Families in apprehending four surviving babies so that they could be given blood transfusions "didn't meet the principles of fundamental justice." The six babies, which weighed only 700 to 800 grams each when they were born at 25 weeks gestation, struggled to survive from the outset and two died. The province seized the other four at the hospital, and took them away for transfusions before returning them to the care of the parents. The father, who attended the hearing yesterday, said the four babies "are doing really well," and that he and his wife are caring for them at home. As devout Jehovah's Witnesses, the parents opposed blood transfusions, and had been urging alternative medical care for the infants. Chief Justice Brenner noted in his comments in court that no decision he could make would turn back the clock for the parents concerning the blood transfusions, but he acknowledged that his decision might have significance in similar cases. "You can characterize this case as being not about religion at all, but about the right of parents to make decisions [on behalf of their children]," said Chief Justice Brenner. Shane Brady, one of two lawyers appearing for the parents, agreed with that assessment, but said the court should weigh the importance of the family's religious views because it explains the "great emotional and psychological impact," of the government's actions. He said the parents felt violated when blood transfusions were imposed on their babies. The state moved quickly to authorize transfusions after two babies died and the hemoglobin levels of the surviving four began to drop. But Mr. Brady said the government moved before the hemoglobin levels had reached a level that was of imminent medical concern. He presented a chart that showed a wide range of views among doctors over what hemoglobin levels are safe in premature infants, and said the babies had not yet fallen to the lower end of that spectrum. "Certainly by medical standards, transfusions weren't necessary [immediately]," he said. Mr. Brady said although there was "ample time" for the government to allow the parents to make a legal argument, authorities chose to authorize the transfusions without a judicial hearing. When the parents went to court to challenge the apprehension orders after three of the children had been transfused, the government filed a withdrawal form to return the babies formally to the parents. That negated the parents' opportunity to make their arguments in court. Mr. Brady said later that same day, only hours after leaving court, the government restarted the process and seized the fourth baby for treatment. "The parents' main attack is on the ... process," he said. "This is not a case saying a state never has a role," said John Burns, who is also representing the parents. "But state intervention must be justified." Responding to a question from Chief Justice Brenner about what happens when the urgency of a medical situation comes up against the rights of parents to a fair hearing, Mr. Burns laid out the timeline of the sextuplets' birth and subsequent treatment. He said that it is clear from the record that the government had planned for nine days to apprehend the babies, and that it did not hold a hearing during that period. "There was a reasonable opportunity ... [but] the state acted to avoid a fair judicial hearing," he said.

Church paedophile walks free comment here Weston & Somerset Mercury, UK -39 minutes ago Aug 29 2007
An elder in the Jehovah's Witness church who sexually assaulted a baby and a toddler will never be safe on the streets said his Clevedon sister as he walked ... An elder in the Jehovah's Witness church who sexually assaulted a baby and a toddler will never be safe on the streets said his Clevedon sister as he walked free from court.
Michael Frederick Porter molested 13 victims in North Somerset.
The married church elder, who grew up in Portishead , groped boys as they slept in bed or took advantage of tiny children as he babysat them.
The 38-year-old, of Friern Barnet , London , was only brought to book after he was reported to the elders of the Jehovah's Witness church in Portishead .
Porter then made a full confession to his own church group in London .
He admitted three charges of committing an act of gross indecency and 22 charges of indecent assault and was handed a three-year community rehabilitation order and a Sexual Offences Prevention Order stopping him from having unsupervised contact with children under the age of 18 and living or sleeping at an address where there are children under 18, until further order.
However his sentence outraged his sister, 40-year-old Tina Hughes, from Churchill Avenue, Clevedon.
Following the hearing at Bristol Crown Court she said she was 'absolutely distraught' for all her brother's victims and the fact he 'walked'.
"He has gone back to London and left us to pick up the pieces. He hasn't lost anything. He hasn't even lost his wife. He hasn't been affected in any way. He can go away and pretend nothing has happened because he doesn't have to live here.
"He is who he is, a paedophile. He will never be safe on the streets."
Robert Davies, prosecuting, said not all Porter's victims were aware they had been abused, including an 18-month-old baby and a three-year-old boy.
He said the sex attacks happened in the 1980s and 1990s. One victim was repeatedly molested as he slept in bed and woke once to find the defendant on top of him.
Mr Davies said the last victims Porter interfered with were aged just five and seven.
Telling how the paedophile was forced to confess his sins, Mr Davies said one victim reported him to the elders at the Jehovah's Witness church in Portishead where Porter's family were said to be members.
"Michael Porter was entirely apologetic for what he had done and said he would speak to his elders. He sent his order a text message to say others had been involved (victims).
"He arranged to make a confession to them. He was advised sensibly to go to the police," said Mr Davies.
He said the defendant handed himself in to police in Weston-super-Mare last October and confessed.
Tabitha Macfarlane, defending, said her client knew he had destroyed and injured people's lives.
"Any show of public hatred towards him he understands," she said.
She added: "But for his admissions, his incredibly full and frank admissions, the matter would not be before the court today."
Sentencing Porter, Judge Thomas Crowther QC said: "This is a case which in my experience is exceptional, in a sense historic and revealed by you in unusual circumstances which I am sure are linked with the faith by which you now run your life.
"I'm satisfied, having the advantage of a number of reports as to your early background, that the reasons for your behaving as you did are complex and personal and reveal that you were subject to pressures which make it understandable that you should have acted as you did in this case.
"What's important, in terms of sentence, to realise is that you had changed your life before there was any question of these matters being revealed and I'm as satisfied as I can be, whereas in some circumstances punishment by way of imprisonment is inevitable, this is not one of those, and the proper sentence is a community rehabilitation order. -------------- Danny's submitted comment: It's about time! Yes,the Jehovah's Witnesses religion is NOW reporting their criminal cases to the Police and claims to have handled this case properly. -
