  Covid-19 (Coronavirus) - Status Update Thread

  this topic is to focus on status updates & advice (no opinion or politics please).. status.

  latest status is that it's serious, probably isn't going to be contained and most large companies are making contingency plans, cancelling large events etc... which i don't think would happen if it was just people being alarmist.

  the incubation period means it may have already spread further and infected many more people than are currently known, so expect jumps in the numbers over the coming days and weeks.. tracking.

  Even if the UK dramatically altered course tomorrow and shut down, it will still have been far slower
  than most other countries have managed. It is a complete disaster.

  I dunno, if you count "Florida" as a country:

  -- bars & nightclubs open until 3 days ago

  -- beaches open until 2 days ago, and still technically up to local jurisdictions about whether to close them

  -- thousands or tens of thousands of college-age spring breakers, after mingling in that environment for multiple days, are now driving back home, undoubtedly a huge proportion of them carrying the virus with them to infect their home towns.

  I would not be surprised if Florida, with so many people 65+ and being even worse prepared for testing than most of the rest of the USA, just by itself surpasses the UK's, or even Italy's, overall death count.

  Why would you think it's a conspiracy?

  Growth in the US is still exponential, even with only the inadequate testing done so far. Within about a month, if things go as they have up until now, we're going to need a few hundred, or a few thousand, of those field hospitals.

  they were told to risk imprisonment to keep meeting and preaching because "we must obey god rather than men".

  while here in the u s. we voluntarily cancel meetings and preaching because "we need to be in subjection to the superior authorities".

  Be careful that your hatred for all things WTS doesn't make you irrational.

  Would you be criticizing the WTS if they had taken the opposite position: "you must attend meetings, quarantine or no quarantine"? I suspect so.

  I agree the WTS is worthy of all the rancor you can muster, but in this case they got it right - shut everything down, meetings, field service, everything, right now, and until further notice.

  i went to my local walmart today and most of the can goods and frozen foods were sold out.

  i did a web search from where i buy ammo from, lucky gunner, sg ammo, buds and others.

  bulk ammo is sold out just over night.

  I suspect they will direct that the Memorial be observed in field service groups, in private homes.

  If things get much worse, they might even direct everyone to stay at home and watch via streaming.

  Baptisms exceeding 300K last year – a possible reason

  two facts to consider: 1) most baptisms take place during assemblies and conventions; 2) the theocratic year goes from september to august.

  my theory: the borg changed the calendar of conventions and assemblies so to concentrate the baptisms in a single theocratic year.

  if some conventions used to take place in july/august, for the 2018 series they moved them to september.

  Doesn't seem likely - that would provide for a one year boost, but the following year the numbers would go right back down again.

  What is far more likely:

  Like it or not, JWs continue to have success in making converts in poor countries and/or countries where internet access is far less widespread than in North America & Europe. Their message of "your wealthy oppressors are all going to be killed by God soon, and then you will live in their place in paradise, if you just do what we say" is appealing to people who live in rickety hovels with dirt floors with no opportunity to escape poverty.

  Those increases in South America & Africa are still (so far) more than offsetting the losses in NA, Europe, and Asia.
