JWs who were actually cool
by Black Man inwe always talk about the crazy j-dub fundy types, but i knew some cool jws (co, do, bethelites, pio) during my time.
this is kind of a "where are they now" post along with acknowledginig some jws who were cool and down-to-earth.
as with most "cool" and good people in the borg, most of them are either not jws anymore (burned out) or are not "serving" in responsible positions (funny how that works, isn't it).

Lyn Newton - Elder in Phoenix, AZ He always had his own opinion about how things should be, was very daring when it came to the internet (JW related stuff) and didn't care what anyone thought about it. Could hold conversations about just about anything and he had a viewpoint, he liked to talk. He's no longer an elder and has alot to say about how the org operates. His wife is "odd" but they make it work. His son and I didn't see eye to eye. He was the perfect JW kid. Now I think he's in the military and I know he's df'd.
Tom Reid - ELder in Phoenix, AZ always nice and supportive to me, known him since I was a kid. I worked with him for a few years and we traveled together. He could hold his beer, and told good hunting and Navy stories. He was alot of fun to be around. Also, he was good at looking the other way. He's no longer an elder and barely makes meetings as he's pretty upset about how some brothers treated him. -

---"Do you want to live a life with a JW woman who gives you ultimatums for the rest of your life?"---
That's exactly what will happen.
A few years into the marriage you'll realize that everything you do is what SHE wants to do. HER vacations, HER friends, HER picking what to do everytime you go and do something. Is that the life you want? Don't you have any goals in your life? Do you think you'll ever reach them with someone who insists it's HER way or NO way?
Forget about all the MANY things she'll expect from you as a JW. How about just life in general? Do you really think that if she'll force you into this she'll never force you into anything else?
That was my marriage, and it SUCKED! I couldn't wait to get out and finally did. It's not a life, it's slavery.
You realize there are other single girls in the world, don't you? -

Interesting statistic about JWs in this week's Newsweek
by lucky ini just got this week's newsweek in the mail.
the cover story is "spirituality in america".
page 54 has a table listing change in religious self-identification between 1990 and 2001. the four bottom religions, with negative percentages, are jehovah's witnesses (-4%), jewish, rastafarian, and protestant.

I never noticed inflation of attendance numbers in the cong I was in where I was involved in the counting.
But I did find that before the C.O. visit, the Service Overseer would see to it that the territories were blitzed (once through, no going back to not homes). I hated those weeks, we all worked alone and just had a huge quota of doors to hit.
I told the C.O. of this and he said he suspected such. I don't know what became of it, but the Service Overseer a few months later found something to "get" me on and pushed it like a crazy man. I eventually couldn't take it anymore (even spent a couple days in hospital due to stress) and I had to leave the cong (left the state too). He won, as far as I know. -

WT speaks out on phone sex!! LOL!
by rebel8 ini was reading the "mobile phone" thread and then found the article below on the official wt web site.
i'm surprised they don't tell people to empty the garbage and polish their shoes when they get horny rather than engage in phone sex.
why the wt feels the need to comment on these topics is really beyond me, but it's good for a laugh.. http://www.watchtower.org/library/g/2004/2/22b/article_01.htm.

GB member: What are you doing???!!!
Writer: Uh... Uh... I... I uh, I was just researching for a new article. Yeah, a new article that I'm writing.
GB member: A new article huh? About internet stuff? Telling the R&F more bad things about the internet?
Writer: Yeah! That's what I'm doing. Yeah! It's coming along well.
GB member: Oh, I see. Ok... I look forward to reading it. Oh, and please would you give me that website address for reference when I review the article? Thanks!
Writer: No problem. Are you leaving now? -

If there was ONE thing you could ...
by talesin in... change about yourself, what would it be?.
i'm thinking along the lines of how you perceive/deal with other people, your attitudes, prejudices, learned behaviours, etc.
.... i'll get us started .... growing up jw, i was taught to expect perfection.

I'd have less fear of getting to know people. I keep to myself and am horrified at the idea that someone might ask me over or want to spend time with me.
Just tonight I was at my daughter's school for "curriculum night" and her best friends parents spent alot of time talking to me and following me around. I had a big fear that they might say that I should come by for dinner some time. That kind of thing makes me very uncomfortable. I wish I could change it. -

Death watch
by poppers init just occurred to me that if a family member were lying in their death bed, or that it was known they were about to die, that the family members would make an effort to spend as much time with them as possible.
afterall, they are going to die aren't they?
isn't it logical that you'd want to spend as much time as you could with them, or at least make the time that you still have together as enjoyable as possible?.
-
thom
Or they consider them as already dead, so why waste time with them.
I've heard it compared that those who leave "the truth" have basically committed suicide, so it's time to move on, get over it, and spend your time with the living. -

by horrible life ini know this isn't the place for math questions.

this is daughters homework.

I've been helping my daughter with math (7th grade) but I notice the terminology is so much different that I'm familiar with. I know how to do the math (math is a big part of my work), but the instructions are confusing. One problem last night I had to tell her I had no clue what they expected her to do and to skip it and ask the teacher today.

Most of us remember being 18. Especially the part about being way too self conscious around someone you like. But it sounds like you acted pretty mature in the situation so why worry about it?
When I was 18 I had my GF in the car and I pulled out into a busy road and realized I couldn't make it all the way without getting hit and had to stop right in the middle. I was stuck half way across with cars going around me and I felt like a big idiot. I think what you went through is just typical stuff and I can't see anything to be embarrassed about.
