  Shun Run/Walk 2012

  i am planning a public awareness event for april 1, 2012, i calling "shun run/walk 2012" to draw attention to shunning policies of jehovah's witnesses.

  i use to help out as a moderator on the ex-jehovah's witness recovery forum on yuku, so this is a cross post from that site.

  what you'll see below is a letter i have sent to "sdb:ssy", the otherwise anonymous jw author from us branch who wrote me.

  When will the awful shunning nightmares stop?

  it's bad enough that i am being shunned in real life by my family in ohio who i had always been close to.

  ever since i have had at least one dream a week about being around my family but they refuse to talk to me.. will the dreams ever stop?

  how can i make them stop?.

  serenitynow: However long it takes to work things out while awake (thinking about/dealing w/situations, problems and solutions) it takes the same amount of time in our dreams. You can't make them stop -- there's a drug for night tremors (Ativan?) but you still have to deal with the anxiety/pain while awake.

  Sorry you have to deal with problems caused by an evil cult.

  Twani -- I understand exactly how you feel whether hunger for God (there are many religious venues) or feel loving friends are there for your life. Be objective and know at the hall many are kind because they are "on stage" at meetings perhaps for promotion and it's anything but la la land (of course, just like the worldly losers there are exceptions) and accept reality, and that's the torturous part. People in the world are awful but then again, there are exceptions.

  Don't take anything personal but as info/knowledge for you to reflect on.

  the insidious bind the watchtower religion places on their members is unconscionable.. holding family and friends "hostage" as an extortion strategy may be their most potent weapon of enforced conformity.. .

  in effect, like an armed criminal who points a gun at you and threatens "your money or your life", the watchtower leadership.

  holds the power to separate dissenting members from those whom they most cherish.

  I liked all the fantasy --- perfect world very soon on the horizon and no sickness/no death. Had lost the major family (bio) members I dearly loved and could rely/depend on. I liked the fact they don't kill in wars and some how would listen to my sister talk about this religion that seemed so right (so right but so wrong!). I became brainwashed reading some of the mags (talk about stupid!). Once I was attending meetings/studying it didn't add up (the people were awful -- sure, a couple of decent ones) and had decided I would never be baptized. The power of wanting to fit in/be accepted --- more ignorance. This should have been a clue I needed a shrink not a religion. I'm sure it's coming from a dysfunctional family (not the grandparent/aunt I lost -- they were perfect to me) and trying to replace them or desperately needing God in my life. Trying to reconcile all the evil that had taken place and totally ignoring the evil inside the hall.

  What about alternative help for substance abuse?

  i am a recovering alcoholic and a former jw.

  my attempt to get help from the elders was only met with threats of judicial action.

  i stepped out of the box and sought help from aa.

  talesin -- I agree with you about those who imbibe are dealing w/pain/injustices. Some that drank the most were on the surface the most stable --- all a front I guess. What a toll that cult is on human beings.

  harleybear --- From this post I see AA helps more people than what I previously thought. You're one of the fortunate ones who made it out.

  Perfect timing and thanks for this great article before I'm conned into more charity work w/orgs run by cut-throat, power-hungry women (not all of them are bad, of course). It is difficult to say NO or fade.
