this topic is to focus on status updates & advice (no opinion or politics please).. status.

latest status is that it's serious, probably isn't going to be contained and most large companies are making contingency plans, cancelling large events etc... which i don't think would happen if it was just people being alarmist.

the incubation period means it may have already spread further and infected many more people than are currently known, so expect jumps in the numbers over the coming days and weeks.. tracking.

I don't like this worrying about stockpiling extras -- have couple of elderly friends in my community who can't find paper products/hand sanitizers so at least I can share but I do need to replace. I don't keep as many backups as I use to - farmers always stock up but I broke that habit, unfortunately.

The grocery store this AM was short on many items - including some veggies to make my soup on my second trip. Packed with stressed shoppers. No hand sanitizer (again) and they told me it would be on shelves by 7:00 AM. The show rooms on strip are dark - nightclubs closed down - lots of people infected at MGM since they have more hotels/casinos on strip. Fearful of so cal's medieval diseases on streets with homeless population (and covid 19) and how many infected tourists have roamed around here.

Good luck catching any objective news out there -- anywhere!! Hope this ends soon - crazy!

Hoarders - no tissue, no hand sanitizer left on shelves. Do these morons realize others without these products are going to spread bacteria like never before! I keep extras but it will be another Russia diet for me (I lost about 15 lbs. and was few lbs underweight at time) food so bad but I'm not eating lentils, legumes, out of a can. Guess I'll be soaking/cleaning/cooking stored lentils 'round the clock.

Somewhere on twitter there's a MIT genius who is stating different opinion - I'll try to google his name - I was rushing out of a business and didn't jot his name. He's about 4 degrees and is not following the herd mentality.

NO -- the tests will show who has it - many have no symptoms and it will never tell us just how many have had it and SURVIVED this cold virus.

Check the history/facts - when the SWINE (most have selective memory or never heard in the first place) PIG FLU broke out CNN never reported it as a main topic (2009). MEDIA didn't even make it front page - NY Times - joke! They were all protecting Obama! AFTER WARNINGS from the World Health Organization. ONE THOUSAND PEOPLE DIED in the US before the administration (Obama) paid any attention. 300,000 were hospitalized; 60 MILLION infected. 18 THOUSAND died in the United States under Obama (PIG FLU/SWINE FLU).

40 People have died to date -- none under 50 yrs. old - that's still too many but why would we believe the fear or anything fake news says NOW!! The level of panic is unreal - wrecking the economy. I don't - I take all flus/yearly outbreaks seriously -- their tract record is mob driven.

Amazing how many people die of yearly influenza (and there are thousands here in the US like auto accidents) and no big deal because it's 'all factored in'.

Worldwide there's approximately 137,000 cases of the COVID 19; 81,000 are in China; 15,000 Italy; 11,000 Iran; 8,000 S. Korea per John Hopkins. US: 1,268 - 40 Deaths. 2010 there were 18,000 deaths in United States with Swine flu.

I'm not saying throw out your hand soap, stored beans (I'd rather starve) or chocolate, etc., etc. and NOT be cautious -- but really! This is authoritarian management for power/control and nothing new

I'm not finger pointing, however, at many nursing home/assisted facilities, etc., there are many medical/private physical therapy cos/staff (PTs, DOs, NPs, MDs, etc.) who are Asians coming/going. Many Chinese travel back and forth. They all weren't wearing masks prior to this outbreak. Our famous mall has customers traveling regularly to and fro China. A couple retailers have been quite nervous for many weeks and personnel spend most of their time sanitizing counters, registers - everything in site. It's unimaginable the bacteria on sample products sitting out on counters for customers - no guarantee every single item is cleaned/bacteria removed.

Many Chinese wear masks (even walking/strolling) and I'm sure take every precaution necessary but not all before this outbreak. From what I hear most shopping is electronically/phone these days - stores have been empty for mos but different dynamics for those in the medical field who have to show up after return visits.

I heard Viet Nam has/had no travel restrictions.

Celebs bring sanity - they'd be the last lot I'd listen to. I think there's only been a couple who Hollywood peeps raise concern over the homeless situation in California. Not to worry - it's only mid century diseases sweeping through the streets like typhus, tuberculosis, hepatitis A, bubonic plague - and more. Sea life dying because of the filth running through the drainage into the ocean - no problem.

LongHairGal - I know! I'm staying in town (again) canceling appointments here and there - (my beloved Australian hairdresser (cuts only) is in so cal and I've cancelled) plus life in general down there. Guess it's time to be a hippy or go grungy. I was told the closest hospital has locked down the front entrance - if emergency you must go around the back/whatever and use ER or special door like after hours. They must have the critically ill man who traveled to TX and Washington state - since then 3 more cases reported yesterday - one or 2 bad shape but I don't think in their 80s and this is the real beginning of the reality show here. I'm afraid to go outside and chat with my mailman when he walks the mail up to the door with online orders - I yell thru the intercom and tell him to throw through the gate - I'm seldom home or have the chance and now the COVID 19 horror! If I order any more soap - only thing left online to order for stockpiling (darn) - UPS guy is laughing as he drops at front entrance - we chat thru intercom. My nephew told me I have an Amazon in my garage. I'm ordering groceries online today/having delivered - I can't stand someone picking out my produce/shop for fruit almost daily - this is crazy so I'll probably race to store but it's crowded. I can't eat fruit out of a can - I'm not cutting up salads - my hands hurt from washing! Now I know how agoraphobics who are home bound live. Poor Howard Hughes.

Would be interesting to know how many people are walking around as carriers and where Tom Hanks and wife, Rita Wilson, contacted it - so cal or Australia. I thought Australia only had one case of it - they, too, are clueless how many people are infected. They just don't know yet.

Thx for the info - I read the link posted above and I'm overly cautious just trying not to cancel life yet that seems to be happening'! This will be 2nd wkend in a row to cancel so cal trips. It will mellow out like the Ebola but might be a few mos. Too many infected/ill people (around 15,000) entered US few mos ago and so many land at LAX -- before the restrictions were in place. It's distressing.

Dr. Fauci's - lead physician, indicated it's predicted to be lower than what they originally estimated. CNN took his comments out of context, of course, but it's COVID 19 for a reason - number 19 indicates it's not the first coronvirus.

China has been buying up Italy like crazy - many Chi-cons taking the virus there thus the spread of the virus. State of Washington same thing. I'm not undermining it - seasonal flu is bad enough.
