Postive USA thread - I think the USA is great because ......
by eyeslice ini started a somewhat tongue in cheek, perhaps slightly anti-usa thread yesterday.
i was really playing 'devil's advocate', so here is a chance to redress the balance.

Short of committing murder every time I encounter danger in the shape of a predatory woman to remove the competition, what can I do to control my jealousy for my own peace of mind?
Maybe you should start by attempting to view things through logic rather than emotion. I know that's easy to say, and I struggle with this issue myself from time to time.
What you seem to be saying is that deep down you're afraid he's going to cheat on you or leave with this other woman. If he does, what exactly does that say about him and the strength of your relationship? Would you want to keep a man who doesn't want to be with you? (I'm not saying he doesn't, but am speaking hypothetically)
I've learned to do this when it comes to relationships. You have to simply say f*ck it and let the other person be free. If they stay, it was meant to be. If not, well, what can you do? Just because society tells us that we MUST have a mate doesn't make it necessarily true. We can learn to be happy alone until the right person comes along, if they come along at all.

A question for my UK cousins: What are the different British accents?
by Check_Your_Premises insince i have so many brits and uk types in one place, i was wondering if you all could classify or tell me the names of the different british accents.
i think most in the states could be grouped by region and then each region divided into regular folks and folks with cash.
for instance in thestates, you basically have north east which is can be characterized by your classic new york or boston accents.

This reminds me of the Family Guy episode where Stewie was trying to teach the English girl to talk more proper.
"The loif of the woif was ended by the knoif." (it doesn't come out well in print).
Out of curiousity, what region of England puts an 'er' at the end of words that end with an 'a'? I'm cool with all accents, but hearing someone say Americer is like fingernails scraping on a chalkboard.

If The Elders Wanted To Disfellowship YOU, What Action Would YOU Take?

Have a celebration maybe?
I wish they'd disfellowship my parents so they'd stop bugging them to go to meetings every week. They can't take the hint that some people simply want to leave for one reason or another.

I'd tell him to start wearing a 'What would Jesus do?" bracelet so he'd remember whose example he's supposed to be following.

Starting diet again.
by greendawn ini have started my diet two days ago because eating too many nuts and chocolates over a couple of months made me gain quite a bit of weight.
now i have to lose 10kg (22 pounds)and in this diet i will be doing 1800 calories per day and go for a one hour walk along the beach.
no chocolates, biscuits, cakes, crisps (chips) or nuts and i should be on target by mid september.

Hitting the excercise bike for 10 - 20 minutes a day will get you more results than a 1 hour walk (I tried walking and it didn't help).
Exactly. Effective aerobic exercise keeps the heart rate at a certain elevation for a certain period of time (I don't remember the exact numbers, but it can be found on the Internet).
This is why many people hire personal trainers or go to the gym. They know all the secrets to help one lose weight.

Trying to find an old picture
by stevenyc ini wonder if anyone can remember a drawing, i think it was in the old children book (pink/orange hard cover if i remember correctly), of babies being offered up as sacrifies to a false god.
the god looked like a huge chair/alter with flames ( i think) and horns.. .

I haven't had to struggle much with weight (yet), but I learned in my fitness class that aerobic exercise is the number one factor in losing weight. Caloric intake is secondary. Sudden reduction in calories can cause the metabolism to slow down, making you gain even more weight in the long run.
It makes sense to me. I once worked with my stepfather for a week doing landscaping. It was backbreaking work, and every day for lunch we'd be so hungry that we'd eat at least two sandwiches, which is a lot for me. Even though I ate more than normal, I lost nearly 5 pounds during that week.

My stepsister in Washington has been on meth for 10 years. From what I've been told, rural, northern Washington is full of meth labs.
She first tried it when she was 13. By 14, she had her first child and was completely out of control. My parents couldn't leave her alone in the house for any length of time without her inviting a bunch of junkies over and trashing the place.
She's now 23 and has two children. She's been with an abusive man for all those years: the man who got her hooked in the first place (he wasn't only abusive to her, but to her mother and the rest of the family. He kicked one of my father's dogs so hard that he killed it). People always question why she won't leave this guy, but he's her supplier. He won't even let her associate with her parents anymore. Addicted people will do anything to assure that they continue getting a fix. She left him a few times when she went through rehab, but she always went back after she was released. She went through rehabilitation at least four times that I know of to no avail.
I'm not sure how much hope there is for her...she claims to be clean now, but there are too many indications that she's not. I'm also not sure why my father and stepmother aren't trying to get their grandkids out of that house. They haven't been able to see the kids for over 3 years and appear to be broken up about it. That's all they talk about. They practically raised the oldest child while my sister was younger and did nothing but party and go to rehab, and now they can't even see her.
I wish you luck with your friend. It seems that even if people have all the support in the world, the drug overpowers all. It can be done, but the person has to take control of his life. No one else can do it for him. The mind plays a huge role in successful rehabilitation; some people seem to think that a doctor is going to prescribe a magical drug in rehab that'll make them kick the habit, but without will power and determination, nothing will work.
