Spiritual Paradise

how many of you really enjoyed any of the jw's spiritual paradise found in joe hoba's visble organisation?

Speaking of fixed grins, there was this woman in our cong who used to sit at every meeting with some kind of beatific smile on her face like she had just seen God and he'd told her a pretty swell secret. She used to have her face uplifted, as if to heaven. It would have been very moving to see, if she hadnt had a big wart on her chin with three quite long hairs growing out of it.

Buying Xmas & Birthday Cards

do any of you find it easier buying porn than buying a birthday card?.

i have been 'out' for apprx 12 years now and it still feels naughty buying xmas and birthday cards.

Awwww now thats just not fair on my nearly was ex father in law (thank god it was only a normal kiss and not a tongue kiss of he'd have had me married into the clan too!!)

I always suspected they were bending the rules...

Governing Body and rank and file liabilities

i get the impression that generally the rank and file jws are to be thought of as victims whereas the governing body are the real and only villains in this organisation.

do you think this is a valid opinion especially when it comes to the elders and circuit/district overseers who willingly enforce the gb's often criminal policies?

The witnoids themselves are very harsh on people - they say that everyone who does not take time out to measure their beliefs agains the bible deserve to die at the big A, them and all their children with them. If they were judged by their own standards then every last jack man of em would be slaughtered.

I find it hard to be that harsh. I think of my parents who freely chose to become dubs, then sunk into it and enforced it on me and the cong (my dad being an elder). I cant help thinking they were brainwashed and they were contacted when their lives couldnt have been worse - abject poverty no family or friends around. But at some level they chose to be brainwashed, and I still resent their choice a bit, which deprived me of a full education, friends, roots and balance.

So I am torn - I think there are definately some who know the score and still enforce it - they are evil. There are some who enjoy the power it gives them - they have potential for causing evil things to happen (think Hitlers henchmen and lesser lackeys), and there are those who have stupidly allowed themselve to be brainwashed. Its hard to decide how much culpability they bear. It depends on your view of human nature.

That is a fantastic story. Is it true? Im willing it to be true, id like to think people could be that big. Id like to think I was that big.

(Katie killjoy says - usually the reason you get those dumb 'pass this onto 10 people' e-mails is because they have been designed to spread viruses n stuff. At least thats what the I.T. guy told me at work, so I never pass them on, and also where am I gonna find 10 friends from?)

Governing body GUILTY of wife beatings

an ex-dub friend of mine and i were discussing the various ways in which the wts ( governing body) has in so many ways, been guilty of many ruined lives.

i mentioned to him something i had forgotten about......that being the policy the witnesses had in the past with regards to how a witness mate handled physical abuse by their non-believing mate who physically beat them over their religion.. i related to him how my wife and i used to take a sister with an abusive mate back and forth to meetings for quite some time.

many times she had black and blue marks on her face as well as other areas.

Yes I remember that too Gumby - dogs, chickens, it all really happened.

It makes me sick to think that the society encouraged these poor sisters to put up with domestic violence just so that the Borg had a couple of outstanding stories to put in their magazines. I also hate that sickly holier than thou attitude it encouraged. I mean, honestly If I was beating my partner up id really want to kill him if he went all limp and holy on me, and started saying 'go ahead kill me, I trust in god' Not exactly designed to help two people get on the same side of an issue is it. Im not making light of this - I think this is part of the passive / aggressive thing EF was talking about.

Surely the way to help an abuser is to get angry and tell him / her you are not willing to put up with it, not to go all limp an rightous and super holy.

Anyway, never having been in this awful situation Im not entitled to pass comment, but I dont think the Borg could have thought up a worse response designed to continue the abuse, if they had tried.

Cook at home or eat out?

do you know how to cook, even just a few simple recipes, or do you hate the idea of home cooking and prefer to always rely on restaurants and take aways, or just prepare easy snacks like sandwiches and melted cheese on toast?

I love to cook, and I have lost 16lb in the last 3 months by not eating any processed food at all, but just making all my meals from fresh ingredients.

A chef in the UK just did a programme on how awful school dinners are (Jamie Olivers School Dinners) and he showed the kids in one school how chicken nuggets were made, and every single kid at my school that saw it swore they would never eat nuggets again - they will, but at least it made them think for 5 seconds.

When we were dubs we used to celebrate my mum and dads wedding anniversary so that there was an excuse to buy me presents, and my uncle and aunty used to buy WINTER presents for their kids. I mean how ridiculous?

We used to joke at them waking up on christmas morning and telling each other 'happy winter', having a turkey ' winter dinner' and some winter crackers!

Sometimes I would sit in the meeting with a stupid self righteous grin on my face, and other times id be real depressed. There werent enough thinking people in my cong to feel any sense of belonging or connection. It was like being locked in a room with the less intelligent half of a medieval village.

The only paradise was the one you halucinated after chanting 'spiritual paradise' for too long.
