my inactive mum has an active jw friend with an elder husband.
But WHY? Why do they say they are doing it, and why are they really doing it?
My mum reckons its because they want to wean the R&F off being so dependent on the society (sigh - shes so naieve)
I reckon its because they have run out of things to say.
Theres probably some tax deductible reason behind it!

My inactive mum has an active JW friend with an elder husband. This friend e-mailed my mum last week and among other chit chat told her the public talk was being cut down to 30 minutes in order to accomodate congs where lots shared one hall.
Is this just local (UK - South West) or a global thing?
What are they gonna do with the spare 30 minutes? Teach surivalism? (how to make fire from twigs and live off berries and hedgerow plants??)
we know that we can't always take the direct approach and we know that even a short, reasonable discussion is often out of the question with jw's we may love dearly so we often try to place a little doubt in their minds.
we want them to start questioning cherished beliefs.. is this fair of us?
are we placing our our own agendas ahead of their needs?
Oh if you come to a discussion forum thats totally different.
You come to discuss and learn about other peoples opinions and to discuss, and IMO I think you only have the right to complain on a discussion forum if someone is rude to you in a personal way.
If you dont like what is being discussed theres a magic button on the computer called an off button! You vote with your feet and leave the discussion.

i say mine is english with an admixture of german (before the nazis ever existed, no need to go on about that) northern french and italian from venice.
i look northern european and feel close to that part of the world with family tradition being roman catholic.

this topic does make me laugh when I talk about it with my step mum. I think you phrased the question correctly, (heritage) which would have stopped a lot of stupid conversations ive had with SM along the lines of: SM:shes Italian ME:Really? Where was she born? SM:America ME: so shes American SM: No shes Italian cos her father on her mothers side is from Tuscany and her fathers parents came from Venice ME: But both her parents were born in Detroit and she was born in New York right? So shes not Italian, she American. DOH!

Raised. Totally bought it though for 30 years.
I worry about whether I would have converted had I not been raised. But on balance I think not (impossible to say, isnt it).
I think it must be harder to leave if you have put so much effort into converting - lets face it, its not the easiest religion to join. I mean, join the Church of England and all you have to do is drink tea and attend the odd bring and buy sale, shake hands with people nicely and smile.

Personally I wouldnt do it because I remember being a thoroughly GOOD JW, and I would have dismissed every single argument as 'satan seeking to dissuade the faithful' or 'apostacy' etc In addition I would have marked that person as someone I wouldnt bother talking to again.
I honestly think JW's only have doubts when they come to it themselves, and the best you can do is be there for them when they need someone sane to talk to when their belief system comes crashing down. I dont think it is possible to dissuade a JW ever with any argument or logical reasoning. The brainwashing is too effective to combat by logic.
But thats just my opinion. I couldnt be bothered to waste my energy on hiding to nothing, and at the same time have them think I was satans mouthpiece!
when it finally registered that you did not really have the "truth" after all, what went thru your mind?

when things "clicked", what was your emotional state and what did you about it?.
Total relief that I was going to be able to live until I died, and not be killed soon by god.

my wonderful son who as you know i always brag about.
Glastonbury Festival - although thank god I didnt go this year.
Ive seen more great groups than I can remember at Glasto over the years, but have to agree with some earlier posters - Paul McCartney was truly fantastic, as was Rod Stewart.
But the best thing about Glasto is coming across little stages or areas with half a dozen people listening to some priceless performer you have never heard of. Or falling asleep in a field while some legend plays, like Yes or Robert Plant.
since leaving the jws how has your opinion of "bringing children into this world" changed?.
it floored me the other day to hear a 19 year old non-jw say she didn't want to bring kids into the world because of the state it was in.
it struck me as a very jw thing to say, or at least something i would not expect from a young person..
My mother has always told me NEVER to fall pregnant because it ruins your life. So when I was contemplating having a baby with my partner I asked my dad what he thought about me having a baby.
As he stopped being a JW years ago I was gobsmacked when he said "The world is such a f**ked up place it wouldnt be fair to bring a child into it".
I guess I was hoping at least one of my parents would be able to say something nice about me having a baby. Anyway, im 21weeks pregnant now, so screw em both. My partner is happy and im happy.
