How should I respond to a JW friend? (Australia)
by summerinvincible insorry if this isn't the right place to post this - brand new member here.. i recently caught up with an old friend who is a jw.
she's been witnessing to me, and i've accepted all her handouts because i don't want to hurt her feelings.
but now she's asking me for my "thoughts" about what i've read so far.

Over the years I've tried all sorts of differnt methods.. the only method that works is - dont try, they'll latch onto anything you say to get conversation going. Just tell them, thank you but no thank you, right off the bat. Believe me it works and don't worry about their feelings, I'm sure they don't even consider yours when wasting your time

Non JW celebrities that the JW's adopted as their own
by highdose indon't know if anyone else has ever seen this happen?
examples are princess diana, obama, pavorotti and then of course peter andre, cliff richard, the national geograpic magazine and the who.. all have been adopted as mascots by the jw's i've been around.
i was told about princess di etc that they had been wittnessed to ( someone they knew often sent them the magazines) which of course meant that they were secrect jw's(!).

What a dumb thing to have done!
by Fernando inat times i want to kick myself for mindlessly letting the "god of religion" teach me about the "god of abraham" for more than 40 years.
what was i thinking?.
then again i was a third generation born-in who simply and naively believed the "reality" i was presented with, whilst unknowingly being held captive by spiritually blind, confused, inebriated and insane watchtower religionists in a mental prison with invisible bars..

I felt sometimes the same. Like half of my life has been stolen from me. Even though I left wtbs over 12 years ago, aftermath was anything but painless because decisions and directions taken prior to the exit have had far reaching consequences. Its like when your car is hit on the motorway, it ain't over until it stops tumbling and then some.
After I left, deep down I was an upset, a bitter man. Everywhere I looked I saw evidence of wtbs ruining my life. I wanted to compensate for it so I went on a wild ride. Ride that left me feeling empty. I guess I was searching for something, something that wasn't there.
In the end I felt like Jack Nicholson in the movie Warren Schmidt "I know we're all pretty small in this big scheme of things, and I suppose the most you can hope for is to make some kind of difference, but what kind of difference have I made? What in the world is better because of me?"Then one day, about two years ago I got custody of my little angel. The only bright thing that happened to me because of wtbs. I will never forget one morning she got up early, saved a piece of chocolate. Wrapped in notebook paper like 10 times. Came to my room, looked me deep in the eyes and said "daddy are you happy? Here I saved this for you"
That was it. She made it all worthwhile. I realized then and there, everything I needed I already have. Its strange I should say that but the peace that came into me was almost 'spiritual'. I never looked back. Today I live in a moment and for the moment, after all that is all we have.
Its funny when you stop looking at the past, past loses its power.
Few days ago my x wife made admission to me that she now realizes everything I told her was the truth. In the end one realizes what you really need is peace, everything else flows from it. I can't change past, but I can change this moment, and that is exactly what I've been doing ever since.
And at the moment its time to watch a movie :)

The Control is simply amazing
by outsmartthesystem inat the kind advice of so many of you (and hassan) on this board....i ceased attempting to discuss doctrine/failures with my wife many months ago.
but unfortunately that does not prevent her from grilling me from time to time.
during one of our infamous "discussions" she said she was going to "investigate" this supposed "proof" that is out there regarding 587bc.

Some things take time. We all change and way we think and see things can radically change sometimes rapidly sometimes it takes few years. My ex has just graduated with her BA in psychology. Talking to her now and few years ago is like talking to a different person all together. In fact, I probably wouldn't be even coming to this board were it not for discussion we had in last few days. From a staunch pro-watchtower zealot she has turned into a person that now questions everything. Something I always hoped for her to become but eventually have given up on. She is still going to meetings every now and then apparently but if she continues thinking the same way she showed to me last couple of days I'd be surprised if before long she joins this forum lol
When people invest time and energy into something that has formed their opinions and ways of thinking they can't just turn around. They need to see things for themselves. And fair enough. I say people need space and time to collect facts, compare notes as it were, and re-form how they see things.
Don't forget first impressions are powerful thing regardless if they were wrong or factual. Likewise, her first impressions of 607 vs 587BC were formed through sanitized literature of WTBS. Then they got solidify through repetition and hammering of the same. Then all of a sudden you come with something that in one sweeping move topples the tower of her entire belief system. She's not gonna turn around and thank you for it. Everything that she is, is fighting inside of her. She is trying to find holes in your arguments, dismissing what you say as irrelevant or even accusing you of trying to control her thinking.
What she needs is time, space and freedom to see things for herself. -

The True Nature of Reality
by ballistic indoes any one have any good theories on the true nature of reality?.
if you google this you come up with lots and lots of really wacky fringe science.. it's one of those things that shows just how little humans know about our existance or the universe.. some of the more interesting things i've read, are that our 3 dimensions are just a construct, time doesn't really exist, and another essay explaining that we can't trust our senses and they actually tell us very little about the world around us which is really full of electromagnetic forces, waves of various types and sub atomic particles.. i have started a thread before something along the lines of, i think therefor i am.
i exist on some level.

Many once fringe ideas have eventually been accepted by mainstream physics and science in general. The fact that we have evolved with only 5 senses is only testament to what our ancestors needed to survive, if they didn't need it, it didn't evolve. If by some technology we were able to drop to the level of bacteria we might be amazed that they can live just fine without all these extra senses we have. And if they were able to reason would be dismayed by notion of needing to hear, smell, or see world around them.
Science is work in progress, and what we know today will no doubt be revised or in some cases even rejected once more information becomes available.
Like Shakespeare so eloquently said "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy."
Here is but one controversial finding. -

So have you told her she will not go to his place without you yet? Try it, calmly but firmly. Don't make a scene. I can go on and on why this is important but bottom-line is sitting on sidelines will do you no good and may well be the last nail. Maybe instead of essays and dates what she really needs is for you to be rock she can depend on and I don't mean paying your bills on time. Us guys can sometimes get so wrapped in our own thinking/feeling that we fail to see what we look like from the outside.
You have to make decision. And trust me problem is not in decision but in indecision, lingering over your own feelings. And if she decides to go without you anyway, well I would tell her she doesn't have to come back, but that's just me. It will hurt you next three days, after that you will recover and you will be a better man. You will have discovered something about yourself you never knew was there. Trust me, psychologists and reasoning with her over it will do you no good. My mate (who faced something similar) summed it up in one sentence over beer the other day. "Attraction is not a choice." So reasoning with her about it will do absolutely nothing. Just say your ultimatum calmly and whatever you do DO NOT let yourself be dragged into a verbal match. If you do you will feel like shit and lesser version than you really are. From what I read you are good man. Be great by drawing the line first for yourself, as to what you can live with, and then for her what is acceptable if you were to be in trusting union called marriage. -

Google predicts search - Jehovah's Witnesses mentally diseased
by slimboyfat inhave others noticed that if you enter "jehovah's witnesses" into a google search that the first alternative it predicts is "jehovah's witnesses mentally diseased"?.
i use firefox and am in the uk, if that makes a difference.. does that mean that "jehovah's witnesses mentally diseased" is currently the most popular jw related search?
if so i wonder how many of those searches are by jehovah's witnesses prompted by media exposure of the issue?.
