Abiogenesis will no doubt one day have it's own theory, it won't require somebody going back in time to discover what happened, it will be based on the evidence around us.

Do you ignore the evidence for evolution because no-one has 'was there when it happened'? (of course also ignoring the fact that it is an ongoing process that is going on around us as we speak!)

It's a good job you aren't this skeptical regarding proof of ghosties and things that go bump in the night eh?

i don't believe in creationism now, but i do believe in a creator and that is different.

It seems to be quite common to belittle creationists so I thought I would post something in defense of it. I think we should be careful of just assuming that Scientists have all the answers cut and dried. I have learnt from experience not to put all my trust in what human being says as the indisputable truth. Just thought I'd mention it

I just thought I should mention that you are perfectly at liberty to repeat any of the many experiments that support the theory of evolution, then you can see if your results match that of those pesky scientists. There is no trust in science, if your experiment can't be repeated by others then it isn't science. So do you fancy putting your money where your mouth is?

I have never heard science claiming to have all the answers, because if they did then there wouldn't be a need for any more science.

I would agree that it is dangerous to accept what anyone says as being indisputable truth, luckily science doesn't make that claim and any creationist worth their salt would not do so either. So don't take my word for it or any other scientists, go look at the evidence, repeat the experiments and prove it yourself.

this thing is literally a fish-frog (even possibly a retarded fish-frog!).

Finally confronted my mother...

i finally had the chance to talk to my mum about growing up as a witness and my thoughts on her religion, needless to say it didn't go well.

i don't think she has ever really worked out the implications are of what she believes, i pointed out that it is really difficult to relate to (and have a relationship with) someone who is looking forward to the day when her murderous little god kills her children.

i don't think she really understood the point i was making or didn't want to think about the point i was making.

It was quite liberating to finally say at least some of the things I have been thinking about for all this time but was offset by the fact that she had so little to say for herself. I asked what she would have done if I had been in need of a blood transfusion as a child and her only response was that my dad would have stepped in, I asked again what she would have chosen and she couldn't bring herself to answer.

Every time she had a choice between her family and her religion, it was the religion every time. No words of encouragement for school or college, the only thing I ever heard off of her was 'when are you going to get baptised?'

At this point the conversation went rapidly downhill and she was crying, not for our relationship but because I don't accept Jehobahs right to rule.

I think that will be the last time I will see or speak to her as I really don't want to put myself through it again.

Although it in no way diminishes your point it had actually happened several times before (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angers_Bridge) and I have read that Roman soldiers used to break step when crossing bridges (Unfortunately I can't remember where I read it) to avoid the problem of resonance.

It makes you wonder if the author of that piece is aware that we have had whole civilisations that have managed without the christian god. The author also made the classic theist mistaken assumption of evolution = random chance.

Of course all that talk about shifting morals is all very interesting but is a bit lacking in examples, It seems to me that it is in fact theistic morals that have shifted the most, after all what was considered moral four thousand years ago are no longer moral absolutes in this day and age (except from a fundamentalist minority), although I am just assuming that christian morals have shifted since I don't see too many children being stoned to death outside the city walls.

My own worldview is one in which there is nothing supernatural (be it gods, ghosts or goblins) and the only fundamental worldview other than that is one where you believe in the supernatural to some degree or another.

But the supernatural worldview is based upon human imagination, after all what is the supernatural other than what we imagine made 'real' (in the minds of the believer).

What is god? god is what we imagine it would be like if we were able to shape reality using only our imagination (rather than tools). god is our ultimate genie in a bottle granting us unlimited wishes. god is our own egos, if they were able to shape reality in the same way they shape our dreams and aspirations.
