My job is open late at night certain days, about a week ago around 2am some guy walked by, opened up the door and yelled in "jesus loves you, trust in him to be saved" or something of the sort, and then kept going. My co-workers and I were just kinda standing there going wtf?!

Cults
by darth frosty ini was just watching the repeat of the history channel cults program.
needless to say a lot of the cults they talked about and their beliefs reminded me of the dubs to an extent.
but, it got me to thinking...has the wt$ ever featured an article on cults and recognizing them?

A Dummies Discussion on God, the Universe and Everything.
by nicolaou inthought i'd try a different approach to the big questions but it'll probably descend into the usual disagreements.
still, no harm in trying .

I sat here for a moment actually trying to think about what has always existed...though philosophers may quibble, saying that time doesn't exist if it can't be measured (ie, if no planets revolve, no pulsars pulse, as in the riddle if a tree falls in a forest and nobody hears, does it make a sound?), to me, time is the only thing that always has existed, and always will. Therefore if god is eternal, god = time.
Let's test that theory: Change "God" to "Time" as in the following (mis)quotes:
TIME will destroy the world at Armageddon. (Eventually the earth's orbit may decay, the sun burn out, etc)
TIME created the heavens and the earth, and all the creatures in it. ("Big Bang", evolution.)
TIME is eternal, with no beginning and no end. It always has been and always will be.

I stumbled across the above article completely by accident, while searching Google for a music group called 'Bob to the Rescue', which triggered the keywords Bob Pardon, and the rescue of cult members. It intrigued me of course, even if my finding it was serendipity, and I read the whole thing despite it being a bit lengthy (4 pages). If it hasn't been posted here already, I think a lot of you would find it interesting... it mentions Rick Ross and Steve Hassan, with quotes from each (though whether the article writer was talking to them directly or just paraphrasing their material on the subject wasn't quite clear).
The article also quite clearly states that JWs are a cult:
"According to the AFF’s Carol Giambavo, there are between 2000 and 6000 cults in the United States. There are religious cults and therapy cults, marketing cults and UFO cults, yoga cults and political cults. The groups range in size from army-size outfits like the Moonies and Jehovah’s Witnesses to mini-cults like the one that held Elizabeth Smart and the one in which Kerry became ensnared. If there are any Al Qaeda cells in the US, then they are part of a large, destructive cult. Some marriages have an internal dynamic similar to that of cults, as do many street gangs. Locally, according to Bob Pardon, the groups the Twelve Tribes and the International Church of Christ fit the standard definition very well."
Pardon me if it was posted before, the date at the end of the article is July 2003.

"The state should sterilize them." - Buddy
That's an interesting comment. So...if the sole objection to incest other than "it's weird" is the possibility of genetic problems...should individuals who are willing to be sterilized be allowed to legally marry? Just playing devil's advocate, no flames please.

"Early settlers who came to Australia and New Zealand imported domestic cats, some of which became wild. According to NewScientist magazine, these feral cats now prey on 64 species of native Australian mammals." - from the official JW site, emphasis mine.
Those guys in the writing department better watch their arses, before they end up being branded as apostates...how can any species of animal be native if they got there after the 'deluge'?
"Why does everyone assume that the flood was Global? It was world wide not Global with the word world standing for that part of this planet where the humans in question resided. This is also the way it is used in: John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. And also Joh 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. (not the planet or entire Globe)" -JosephMalik, emphasis his.
By your logic, if the flood was only where man resided at the time, then Jesus only came to take away the sins of those who lived in that part of the world...the Aztecs and native peoples in the Americas were thus outside of salvation, and always will be, because their sin hasn't been taken away. So basically, if you aren't descended of Arabs, Jews, or Mediterranean area Europeans, you're doomed. If you live in South America and elsewhere in the world, might as well just save yourself the trouble and ignore those pesky missionaries. Or maybe they have some half-hope, if they are descended of mixed blood of the Cortez conquistadores and native peoples.

"I would conspire with my double to keep it a secret, and become the worlds greatest magician. I could even fake my own resurrection if my double should die." - Ronin You should rent the movie 'The Prestige', if you haven't seen it yet. Don't wanna say why because it would spoil it, but I'm pretty sure you'd enjoy it.

Specific banned shows, songs, etc...?
by AllAlongTheWatchtower ini know the society tells people not to listen to rock n roll cause its from teh satan, not to watch r rated movies because they're "worldly", etc.
but i was wondering if folks had any specific instances where one song, one show, one movie, or whatever was singled out as being particularly 'evil', and banned on an individual basis?
i was never a jw, but was in the worldwide church of god...the two are rather similar, i've seen many (and made quite a few myself) comparisons on the board; and i can remember as a child that every once in a while certain things would get brought up as being more evil and worldly than others.. examples of specific bans:.

Just thought of another one I forgot to mention in the original post; as a teen I was told AC/DC could not be listened to. The reason? (Other than being rock, which was banned anyway) Because, it was explained to me, "Back in the early days of electricity, there was no standardization...many appliances were either run on AC or DC, and useless if you had the wrong type in your town. So some began being made that could take either one, and were said to 'work both ways'. Bisexuals 'go both ways', so the band must be all a bunch of queers."

Examples of specific bans:
'I Did it My Way' - Frank Sinatra: Specifically mentioned in sermons and articles several times, saying that things should be done GOD'S way, not MY way, this is what's wrong with the world...etc etc.
'Its Hard to be Humble' - Mac Davis: Specifically mentioned because the lyrics go "oh lord its hard to be humble, when you're perfect in every way" -no mere man is perfect; obviously the song promotes a lack of humility.
'Papa Don't Preach' - Madonna: Often talked about as an example of today's youth in "satan's world", was usually mentioned in any sermon having to do with children being obedient, the evils of teen pregnancy and premarital sex, etc.
'Star Wars' Vilified on many occasions as being an allegory of good vs evil/god vs devil, and therefore bordering on sacrilege, it was often claimed that 'the force' was a reference to the holy spirit.
I'm sure if I thought on it, I could come up with some more of these, but you get the idea...anything like this in dubland?
