Umm, no, but pray tell I am most interested to see where you are going with this.

Were You Ever Counseled Because Of What You Wore (or didn't)?
by minimus inafter reading the thread about what is acceptable to wear and not wear in a factory run by jehovah's witnesses, i wondered whether any here ever got counseled or in trouble because of their fashion sense or attire.

Yes, I wore a very nice paintsuit to a Sunday meeting, I didn't care.
I dyed my hair a nice reddish color, it was not appropriate.
I didn't wear stockings in the summer, inappropriate.
I wore a denim dress, my grandmother brought me, was counseled, and I wore it whenever I wanted, I didn't care.

Former Mormon has a question about the JW cult
by FormerMormon ini have been reading a bit on other cults.
jim jones, david koresh, warren jeffs, sun myung moon etc.
i see a lot of similarity between these cult leaders and my lds cult leaders (joseph's myth, bring' em young, etc) all the aforementioned cult leaders had sexual issues.

I have always been curious about the Mormon religion. Not curious as in wanting to participate, but curious in all the different ideologies surrounding it. I have read some things, but in a lot of ways they (religions like Mormons/JWs/etc) to focus around the same cultish ideas.
I really believe they are interconnected somehow.

This is why I prefer foreign journalism to US media. Our newstories are so controlled and we are only shown probably 15% of what is actually going on across our country and 5% of the rest of the world.
Thanks for showing the link.

Who lets it be known that they were once a JW?
by lfcviking ini am curious, for those of us here who have left the jw org, who actually lets it be known to people that they were once a practicing jw.. for me, this is something i tend to keep quiet because it is something i'm not particularly proud of.
anyone else feel the same way?.

I try not to let it come up, but it does when everyone is going home for the holidays or celebrating the holidays. A lot of times, they know I am Buddhist, but some keep asking questions and then I let them know I have never celebrated holidays and thus it begins. I am not proud of it, but I am not ashamed of it either, it is what it is, I didn't have a choice growing up and when I did have a choice, at 18 I was out of there...

Not only is it nitpicky and ridiculous, it is quite sexist! I can't believe any logical woman would agree to these terms. What does wearing pants have to do with anything?!

Then we need to boycott Walmart, and all the other stores that have helped ushering in the China ownership of the US.

The angst of dealing with family when they are still in and you are not...
by Layla33 ini don't think you ever truly make peace with it, somehow you learn to maneveur and swim in it like most things.
i have been out for so long, it's almost like a shadowy memory when i was in, but for my family it is all they have ever known and dared to know.. i feel for the people whose parents have cut them out completely, but mine never truly did that.
i guess we just loved each other a little too much to even think about losing the other completely.

I received a nice little email this morning, thought I would share it:
"...the Memorial of Christ death is this Saturday, it would be nice if you could attend. I know you have differences in your belief system, but I think you still appreciate Christ dieing (sic) for us. Attending the Memorial is a way of showing that appreciation."
This is from a man with two Master's Degrees, highly intelligent and deeply caring, what do I say to this? I swear even when he discusses JW things, it is like he dumbs down.
Here's how I responded:
"Thanks for thinking of me. I appreciate the thought."
and then I talked about something completely not relevant to the subject of the email. LOL
What are you going to do, but deal with it? It's an interesting mix of complexity and compassion. I accept it for what it is.

How sweet is it to NOT be a JW?
by new light indo you ever revisit the old jw ways of thinking, and then compare it to the complete freedom that you have now?
do you remember judging and fearing the everyday activities of the people around you?
remember that dread of restating "your" position on holidays every few weeks, knowing you would just end up further alienated from coworkers?

I love it because I can live without worry and fear and guilt interjected into every moment. I am free to choose my friends, I dont' need to look over my back about looking at a magazine. I don't need to give up my weekends to knock on doors in something I had doubts about. I have let go of the "sermons". I can date, marry, have sex without guilt, my definitions of morality are created by me, and not be some elusive group of men, I have never seen.
I can get educated, I can go to different religions and talk to people, I don't have the Armeggedon dreams, I don't have to worry about dying on an operating table when I needed blood.
I am free. I am free...

Flipper, I think what you did was admirable and exactly what any of us should do when confronted with a witness. Tell them the truth and see how they make excuses for it. HOWEVER, the same exact behavior in other religions is condemned.
But any step, any crack opening the door, will help to at least bring about consideration. That's the point. We never know, she may wind up on here in a year or two.
Reading that made my day.
