Ummm...I'm a bit slow (could be the three glasses of wine I suppose)...if I chose the third one, second point: the place on which you are standing is holy ground; you don't need to come here to be standing on holy ground - where you're standing is holy - so relax, you don't need walk any further to be in a holy place. What is that score wise?

What did you hear to get that fear? (No.1)
by A Paduan ini thought i might start a series of presentations to assist critical thinking and the dispelling of fearful conceptions about biblical text.
i have no particular order of study, just random as i think of it.
important to this examination of fearful assumptions is the input of your views, and/or the official jw thought on the topic particulars - anyway, here goes

Working for the State or Government
by jula71 inthe above thread got me thinking.
one of the main reasons dub's don't get involved with the military is that they do not want to "support" the government to which it serves.
ok, how about working for the government?

It's so stupid...I'm allowed to work for the Federal Government in any Department except Defence! It's still doing the same kind of work, just a different name on the letterhead!

"The Truth" about Higher Education
by Ozner ini am a longtime witness (35 years), born "in the truth" and raised up in the 70's.
higher education.
at that time, i agreed with it.
-
Del
Hi Ozner...do you think their intentions are a) get everyone to be a tradesperson so they can use the free labour, b) keep everyone as ill-educated as possible so they will be less likely to see the 'truth' or c) both of the above? The higher-education p'd me off as well...I love law and wanted nothing more than to study at uni, but nope I got discouraged and was told to do something practical like become a secretary. I'm studying law now...finally, and I think I'm managing to un-brainwash (or re-brainwash?) my mother. I've been harping at her for three years that it is getting more difficult to get well-paid jobs without a degree. It's getting really competitive and experience without the piece of paper loses out against experience with the piece of paper. She's actually starting to agree with me *gasp*. I can only hope I can de-program her in relation to other things.

JW dating sites and the number of divorced!
by toladest ini was curious to see if i knew anyone that would post on a jw dating site so i checked out jw connections that is linked to on this page.
i did not find anyone i know but i was kinda shocked to see the number of ones there that were "divorced, but free to marry".
is this a big problem now or is it just that more divorced jw's use the web to find "mates".

Just amazes me how sexist the WT org is. I try every week to influence my sister to wait before getting married, travel the world, live out of home as a single independent woman, make her own money and do NOT EVER EVER be a doormat for any man...hehehe, I'm creating a monster (well, the JWs would see it that way!). I can only plant the seeds and hope they take :))

Can someone help me to understand?
by hiccup ini am very new to this whole "religion" and although i have pulled up some information on jehovah's witnesses, i can't seem to get my arms around it.
the reason i have come here is because my father has been doing bible studies and readings for about 2 years now and over the last 6 months to a year he has been someone very different from who i used to know.
it all started with a near fatal car accident and then with my sister getting involved with drugs and running away with her boyfriend.

Hi Hiccup...my family was wealthy when my mum became a jw...then later on my dad became a jw and quit his job (they had enough wealth to live on indefinitely by that stage). Even though he quit his job and was baptised - still a kind of stigma attached to all of us because of money. It's not that we flaunted it, just had nice clothes, new car and a decent sized house. Anyway, my mum stopped wearing her suits and other nice clothes and instead started wearing these fugly skirts and cardigans things so she'd 'fit in' with all the other over 40 witness women that were at the kh. Just thankful that they didn't throw away all their money...it wasn't that the religion didn't accept wealth - just that it caused a lot of envy (lots of little green monsters attend that kh!). I hope you can get your dad to listen to reason...what happens if one of them gets sick? The organisation won't care for them or pay for treatment. And when people say but we need help! the org might just turn around and say "but you have to take the time to care for yourself and your family and that means providing the family with financial support". I saw it happen once and couldn't believe the orgs nerve after shoving down people's throats that field hours are MUCH more important than working, with the little addendum to negate liability of - but if you have to work to support yourself then keep it to a minimum. Is it possible for your parents to keep the house and rent it out? That way if things go South then they at least have 'investment' to fall back on.

JW women focused on appearance!
by Sirona init really gets on my nerves.. jw women used to be always focused, as their number one thing, on appearance.
they could be crap at the rest of the jw stuff, but if they turned up at the meeting dressed nice, thin, long hair, looking nice, all was forgiven.
of course it was because of the misogyny (sp?

You are all so right!! Aarggh, those shallow women/girls drove me nuts!! First time I went to KH (was only 14) the first thing they did was look me up and down head to toe! I couldn't BELIEVE it! To me that is so rude. Every assembly for five years it was the same thing, look you up and down before saying hello. All they cared about were their new outfits and shoes. I didn't really give a chit what I wore...I used to wear something that I knew they'd remember just to stir them (had to have some entertainment over the weekend). And almost all of them were 'boy' crazy, a lot of them got married very young. I think I was considered a trouble maker, wouldn't conform and kept questioning everything so I didn't make any real friends while I was held captive to WT. Of the few jw guys that took an 'interest' in me, three of them d'a or were d'f...like attracts like?

JW belief and Catholic Nicene Creed: resurrection of the dead
by Del ini'm confused...jw teaches that the dead will be resurrected and live in new world (simplified of course for this purpose) and nicene creed at end says "look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come"
so, scriptually, does this mean that there may be a resurrection of the dead upon the earth?
i'm not sure how old the nicene creed is...just strange that this line is even in it considering that catholic church teaches that our soul (if good) goes to heaven when we die (again simplified).
-
Del
Thanks M.J. I will read what's on those sites. the_classicist - I didn't know that other Christian denominations recited the Nicene Creed. I was raised a Catholic for 14 years before parents became involved with JW...haven't explored other Christian denominations as yet.

What do you feel when you see groups of Jehovah's Witnesses on the street?
by nicolaou inregret, anger frustration?
how about sadness, sorrow, sympathy, understanding, even yearning!.
it can be quite confusing at times.

Lol! Some of these posts are great. What do I feel...I get all paranoid and think "Cr*p, am I do anything wrong right now - don't want my family to hear anything bad!" Stupid, but trying to stay on good side of my family for my little sister's sake.

Why do active witnesses frequent the site?
by jimakazi ini'm somewhat currious why active witnesses appear to frequent the site, and if the information on this site causes any to "fade away" or "dis-associate"?.
personally if i have known 18 years ago what i know now i would have been a lot more active in trying to convince all i cared about to leave, instead of fading away [gone with a bang so to speak].
it's funny how when you are in it you can't see it for what it is.

I'm one of those visitors who have been reading a lot :)) I'm really glad I found all this information, I just hope my sister will come across this information and read it. I guess some of the active witnesses might be curious, disillusioned, scared...maybe some of the who's who of WT read to "check up" on what's being said (hehehe, excuse the conspiracy theory)
