JW's going door to door in poor neighborhoods
by Wordly Andre ini'm not sure if its just me, but i've noticed that every time i drive through the "ghetto part of my city" ok maybe ghetto is a poor choice of words but poor neighborhood, i always see jw's out in the streets.
i live in the same city only in the better part and i hardly ever see jw's on my street?
not that i am complaining about it but, i was thinking do they target lower income families, or in their eyes uneducated people for their ministry?

My mom is always happy when bad things happen. The other day when all the mess in the middle east broke out, I forgot who I was talking to(!!)and said wow, looks like armageddon is breaking out(not serious, just a passing kind of comment) and my mom was excited and perturbed at the same time, "This crazy old system of things needs to end soon, I just hope its over fast!" OMG!!!! I know who she is and how she thinks, but all I could think of was the decades of pain and suffering that she has been rejoicing over all my life, knowing it is all going to bring about Jehovahs kingdom. aaaarrrrrgggggghhhhh!!!

Can you prepare solid meals?
by greendawn incan you prepare interesting solid meals or do you not have the flare for it and instead prefer to live on take aways, restaurant meals or simple casual snack meals at home?
i find it hard to concentrate on cooking though i always want to do it and i have actually put together some interesting recipes several times.
there is a strange resistance blocking me.

I love to cook and try new recipes. I read cookbooks like some read novels. If you resist the time it takes, try Rachel Ray-she specializes in delish food that only takes a half hour to prepare(for real!)
I am training my daughter to cook and plan meals. Getting out of food ruts is a great way to get busy cooking. Find 3 recipes, make sure you have the ingredients and try new things.
Spaghetti carbonara-totally delicious, easy, fast and really bad for you(in a really good way!)
Stir Fry anything
Breakfast for dinner (some family favorites)

So, he talks to this cute little housewife shopping for her husbands dinner and strikes up a conversation with her, finds out what she had planned for the day.
She teaches Bible lessons to people and that is how she was going to spend her afternoon. He jokes, saying he ought to go along with her-how does she do it? She goes Door-to-Door. He says he ought to do that. . .anyway, after she tells him that to do it he would need to set a good example, not have any vices(she was buying wine when he approached her and used Kahlua in the Tiramisu, but I guess that is only a vice if you are LDS), and do something with his hair I knew she was JW. . .which she soon stated. He, not suprisingly, shut up and said not another word about going out in door to door ministry with her!
Anyway, she was a cute lady, and nice, and there were a couple of non JW'y "Oh MY GODS" when hubby came home, but it was otherwise unremarkable.

#1 My first drink was at 14 at a JW gathering at the Philips house.
#2 My mom and her brother both have severe alcohol issues, one denies, the other is past denial. Both are JWs. My mom drinks more when she is being a good witness. . .go figure.
Another aunt who was seriously JW for some years has fought substance abuse of various kinds most of her adult life. Two other siblings(raised by my mom and her JW leaning mom)both suffered from alcohol issues-one had a totally loser life and the other died at 36 from a heart attack.(Alcohol had a great deal to do with his health issues) One sibling, not a JW married an alcoholic, but her life is pretty much intact.
#3 They don't get to do anything ELSE, if they took away the binky, there would be mass defections.

Speech on Jehovah's Witnesses for College
by jayhawk1 ini have a speech to do for college speech class.
it is to be a persuasive speech and i figured a good topic would be; "are jehovah's witnesses rational?
" certainly with my background (being raised as one of jehovah's witnesses, then shown the ugly side while still an active member, and finally researching the truth about jehovah's witnesses) gives me a wealth of information to pull from.

i think that a speech about how they control their sheep would be interesting. Catch phrases, doctrines, circular reasonings. If the focus is on the 'thought control' aspect of it or even controlling religions in general, you might give them a real defense when they come upon that kind of thing, other than simply a morbid curiosity about the org. which might lead them into it. let them know how folks are manipulated, typical cult methods etc. good luck! shelly

As I was reading the various posts to this thread. I considered the damage done to so many through this (and other)religion(s). I think it is quite akin to marital or spousal abuse. Is a person any less abused because they never get the courage to escape? Or if they are too dim to realize it is possible? My mother in law was abused for 20 years by her husband. Physically and emotionally-and so were some of her (8) children. When she tried to leave him after only one child, her family told her that she married him, she had to deal with it! That was in the 50's. How difficult was it for women over the ages to leave an abusive relationship? How hard was it for you? Did you hesitate? Fade? Are you still faking it? Did you run like hell and change your identity, get a new phone number, leave no forwarding address? You all KNOW how hard it is. How many lost parents, spouses, children to this organization or its power over others in your life? Whether they are in or out, in positions of (relative) power or simply answering the easy question at the very end of the WT study-you are well and truly stuck in a very difficult situation to get out of. Some of you still are. And the deluded ones who still believe it is actually the truth and who are hurt by the organization are like poor kicked dogs-loyal to their owner and accepting the abuse as their due. THAT is sad. I was wondering if Cano was disfellowshipped 'scripturally', or if he was thrust out because of legal evidence. Legal evidence would not necessarily constitute biblical grounds according to the society.

I got mine a few weeks ago, although the JWs stopped 'stopping by' years ago. Just an interesting aside-our area used to have 3 weekends in a row at the Tacoma Dome. This year there are 2 conventions. My mom has an interesting memory about visits. . .when my dad was dying of cancer, she spent the last 6 months of his life with him constantly at his side in various nursing homes and hospitals(she spent maybe 3 nights at home during that time and one night in the emergency room after a panic attack.) She had ONE visit during that time by JWs, even after requesting through the congregations and the hospital chaplains. SIX months. She took to drinking A LOT during that time. You all know that if you don't go to the meetings, you don't get your 'food'. Well, for six months she wasn't getting the current kool-aid. Recently when discussing it(one of our discussions on the subject that surprisingly didn't get icky), I reminded her that she did not get much support from the 'brothers' during the hardest time in her life. Suddenly, she has memories of regular visits! I know for a fact that she didn't get any current magazines for months on end-I had even contacted the local congregations MYSELF, IN PERSON because no one ever answers the darn phones. I brought her the latest magazines myself. It is so pathetic the 'loving support' that these 'the happiest people on earth' offered my mom as her unbelieving husband died slowly before her eyes.
