Smoking when pregnant.
by Moomin inon the radio today they spoke about people who smoke when pregnant.
a woman rang in and said it was probably absolutely fine as her mum smoked when pregnant with her and she turned out alright?!?
the news was that some young mothers-to-be are deliberately smoking as they heard that it will make the babies smaller and therefore easier to give birth to.

The physicians, OBGYN, etc. we spoke with when my ex-wife was pregnant with our son, all said that as she was a 1-pack a day smoker, it would be best not to quit entirely due to the withdrawal, but to cut down fairly dramatically.
Our son came out with an appropriate weight and was fine.

Have you ever noticed how "Born-Agains" get angry when you don't believe?
by booker-t insince you have been out of the jw's have you ever noticed how born-again christians get angry when you don't believe in their "interpretation of the bible"?
it never fails since i have been out for over 15 years when i run across a born-again and they don't know my past they will try to force their interpretation down my throat until i show them that i am very versed in the old and new testaments.
i know all of the scriptures that they will bring up and if i disagree with them then i am going to "hell" according to them.

8pm for us. I'm so there! Now just to either make sure the kiddo's asleep in bed, or kept otherwise occupied so I can watch it intently. (No TiVO or other DVR for this boy at the moment.)

The JWs still blind to the implications of the 1995 generation change
by greendawn inin 1995 the wts as time finally caught up with them, they had to yield to the inevitable and admit that its hitherto interpretation of the so called 1914 last generation was erroneous.
to all intents and purposes the end was indefinitely posrponed it could be centuries away according to the new explanation.
yet the r&f do not seem to realise these implications and are apparently suffering from collective blindness they still believe the end is as near as it was before 1995, just round the corner.

I think a more distressing symptom of this is how it shows that their "Truth" seems to be so elastic.
How can one expect to guide her life so rigidly (and they do rather demand rigid obeyance) by the laws passed down from the WBTS as "The Truth", when "new light" can come along at any time and trump it?
And if you were to use the argument that they're just coming to a better understanding of "The Truth", doesn't that necessarily make it less "The Truth" than just "The Opinion That We Happen to Hold At This Moment"?
This would all be resolved if they could just admit that they aren't guided by some infallible Holy Spirit and are just floundering around trying to make sense of everything just like the rest of humanity. That could be forgiven I think.

Greendawn, I don't think it has anything to do with intelligence. Iannacconne has observed that otherwise perfectly rational, intelligent people can fall victim to such cognitive dissonance relatively easily when it comes to matters of faith.
I was utterly floored by the "generation change" when I found out about it around 2000. Then again, I'd been out for 9 years. If I'd still been in, I may very well have towed the line just like the rest, bending my logic to allow for this irrationality.

New Urban Legend! Anyone heard about Hormel?
by gaiagirl ina member of another conservative cult (calls itself a bible fellowship) where i work told me that hormel, the makers of canned chili and other foods, is run by homosexuals, and that i shouldn't buy or eat their products.
i asked how the bedroom practices of the company owners or employees affected the quality of the food?
their reply was that "everything gives off something" and that the food would be tainted by some kind of deviant unnatural vibes because the owners/employees were deviant and following an unnatural lifestyle.

you mean you can actually get chilli in a can over there? I don't care what its sexual preferences are - that sounds amazing!
Yeah!! But Wolf Brand is much better than Hormel, IMO.
