Sorry for barging in on the discussion, I would just like to say something about "democratic thought"...seriously: In certain (not all) academic matters, there is no such thing. When it comes to history, and historical research, it`s not simply ok for "anyone" to come up with "anything", because history is something that has actually happened, that is, there is an actual empirical basis (and past...) to take into consideration. If someone claims something that can be proved to be historically false, or even extremely unlikely, then it`s not ok to simply say "well, he`s entitled to his opinion". By doing so, not only will you support a line of thought that is completely absurd (although it may suit you in this particular matter), but by justifying this approach and this line of though, you will also have to accept that others take the same approach! (For example, in this perspective, you would have no right to criticise the Jehovahs Witnesses for their ridicolous 607-theory).
There is nothing, nor should it be, anything "democratic" about knowledge.

Narkissos:
This is complete nonsense, but the very fact that some fairly educated people can buy into it (even for a short while) is quite revealing of the epistemological crisis that the internet age is just starting to bring about imo.
This is SO true! Semi-or no-scholarship + the internet = conspiracy theories.
I`d go as far as to say the internet is a curse.

Ridiculous JW superstitions
by B_Deserter ini'm not talking about the stuff you hear at the kingdom hall, i'm talking about the "experiences" you were told of by people you knew.

3) Superstition: You can actually be attacked by demons while in bed at night. But if they attack you, yell as loud as you can; "Jehovaaaaahhh", and the demons will run away, cause they are afraid of his name, ha ha.

2) Superstition: The husband of one of the "sisters" in the congregation, was not a jw. And, he had been in Africa in his youth, and had brought back African masks, and he insisted on having them hanging on the wall in the livingroom. They were of course demon-posessed. In fact, they were so demon-posessed that one hot summer day, when the "sister" came back from the grocery store, an egg popped out of the egg-carton, and started frying on the kitchen table, all by itself.
Whether the demon also cooked up some bacons to go with that, the story does not say.

Nr. 1 superstition: Jehovah would never allow anyone to call their child (or pet) his name (Jehovah). If anyone would dare do this, they would die (on the spot).
It`s true, I heard it from my grandmother...so it`s an old one. It came up when I asked her why it was ok that people named their son Jesus (f.ex. in south america), but not "Jehovah". I was 11 or 12 at the time. So I got this explanation. Now I`m thinking, that if I ever get a dog, I`ll call him "Jehovah". Or maybe Satan, I haven`t decided yet...

Study shows Jehovah's Witnesses heart surgery patients do better than patie
by whereami inthis was sent to me by a jw, trying to convince me how correct they are to refuse blood.
it's one of those, "see i told you we were wright" things.
enjoy.

Yes, I have read about this too. It appears that heart surgery-patients who receives a blood transfusion have a higher mortality rate than those that don`t. Of course, the jws are gonna use this study for all its worth, blowing it all out of proportions, "see, we told you so, blood is baaaad", and then they won`t mention all the cases in which people will actually DIE without a transfusion (severe bloodloss as a result of accidents, major surgery, etc). The logical conclusion to this should of course be that heart-surgery-patients should not receive blood transfusions unless they really need one. That`s all. It`s no biggie, and nothing to get hyped about. If they bring up this argument, just show them the article from that 80s Watchtower, with the faces of all the children who did NOT have heart surgery, but they still f##king died. And if they HAD received blood transfusions, they would still have been around today. Murderous cult.

Jephthah's Sacrifice of his Daughter - real or figurative "burnt offering?"
by B_Deserter inwhile reading richard dawkins' book "the god delusion," he talked about jephthah's sacrificial slaughter of his own daughter.
i was utterly shocked.
after all, "my book of bible stories" taught me that he sent her away to jehovah's service, like a nun or something.

Narkissos: WoW ! I would like to see how the jw`s justify/explain that one. After all, these "false gods" are not supposed to have existed... Maybe they would say that "Satan" helped the king of Moab, or something.

New date for Armegeddon???

B_Deserter: I know exactly how you feel. In the 80s, I remember my mother making a big deal about the S.A.L.T-meetings between the U.S. and the Soviet union, and when that term was used, "peace and security", or something similar, that was it, Armageddon was coming. Talk about scaring the sh!t out of a child. Damn stupid people.

Great stuff, although there are some errors here and there ((who will be ressurected, that the religion has changed its name "many times", that it was started by "an 18-yearold" (Russell was in his late twenties when organizing the little group in Allegheny)), etc. But all in all, a very heartbreaking story, and I love the fact that the writer is from Melbourne. That magazine, is it situated in Melbourne? Because I have Jehovahs Witness-family there. They are real assholes, and I hope they read this article...
