Great, simple Watchtower quote to show their HYPOCRISY. Easy to use.
by nicolaou in"we cannot take part in any modern version of idolatry-be it worshipful gestures toward an image or symbol or the imputing of salvation to a person or an organization.
" the watchtower, 11/1/1990, p. 26. .
and from the very same month and year .

Dumbfounded by COC
by eyeslice inover the weekend, i read for the first time crisis of conscience.. whilst i was already familiar with much of the material on chronology, 1874, 1914, etc.
i was dumbfounded to learn how the governing body actually works and conducts itself.
i think that many of us who have been elders in the past can really relate to ray and the battle he faced.. i must admit, i thought it was just me, and the battles i have faced with local hard-line elders.

You had some of the same reactions I did. I read it while an elder and it amazed me how the GB functioned pretty much like the elder body when it came to the personalities. I was more convinced than ever that the whole "spirit directed" thing was bogus. After all the GB was just like an elder body and we were guided sometimes by good sense, sometimes by procedures, and sometimes by politics. But never could some "active force" be felt (though I know that's subjective as some elders did swear they could feel holy spirit).

New Here - Hi All
by findingme92 ini'm new to this forum and look forward to getting to know you guys.. just a short summary about me, i was raised a jw, baptized at 15, married at 25, moved a few states away, started fading away about a year and a half ago.
started doing some searching about some long-standing doubts and completely sure now that this isnt the truth.
being out is still new and very difficult, but i'm making strides every day.. as i said, i look forward to getting to know you all..

Funny you guys and gals mention children. I made such a sudden exit because of my daughter as well. I was happy making problems from the inside. I'd get people to post talk outlines (including here when we were JWD) and talk to the media. I associated with "apostates" and posted here. But when my daughter turned ten and pressure was on the horizon to make her a publisher, when her meeting attendance along with her mother's was being called into question, when she started to read WT publications on her own, I decided in a hurry it was time to leave. The rest is history.

I really can relate to a lot of what you said. Like about critical thinking skills not being taught so much in K-12, df'ing, 1914, college, double standards on weddings and "worldly" relations, and being born into the org. Many of these things always puzzled me and I truly feel that I would never have fallen for a group like this on my own. I was screwed by birth and had to find my way out. Good luck to you on doing the same.

The issues are probably complex, dealing with who knows what. But I will say it felt good to hear that the Seals took these guys out and the hostage was rescued.

We're not a cult because we don't have communes
by carla inhave you ever heard a dub say that they are not a cult because they don't live in a commune?
(aside from all the other reasons they are a cult- see other thread about wt mind control) my question is, isn't bethel rather like a commune?
and what about the wt farms?.

Lady Lee, I had the same problems thinking of the WT as a cult for a while. It wasn't till I realized that the control doesn't have to be physical (as in a commune) that it became clear. In many ways I think the mental bondage is way more powerful.
However, it is probably worth restating that WT does have something similar to communes as well. The Bethel's and branch offices, with members taking vows of poverty, and their inability to make their own money coupled with the tiny allowance they get functions similarly. One difference is the fact that Bethelites can get "green handshakes" and money from family if they have it that way.
So in the end it comes down to the mental control which to me is analogous to the commune which clinches them in my mind as a cult.

NARKISSOS need your input on Rev. 5:10
by IronClaw inmy wife just gave me notes that she took at this past memorial.
in her notes the speaker referring to the 144,000 and what they will be doing uses rev.5:10 as saying they will rule "over" the earth.
when reading this scripture in my tyndale bible it reads as "on" the earth.

It seems to me that this is another case of people following those who really are confused themselves. Of following those who sound educated but once you dig deeper it becomes apparent that they are confused themselves. The Society's misconstruing the Greek on the basis of the English is a mistake one would expect from someone who doesn't have a complete grasp of the issues, or someone who cares less about such a grasp and more about upholding their belief system. Interestingly, the latter is something the WT regularly accuses other religions of doing. Of course in the end it really doesn't matter since the Bible is a hodgepodge of ideas written by many individuals and to extract a cohesive belief system out of it is problematic at best.

WHY can't Jehovah "REINSTATE" Satan?
by african GB Member inand we can get on with our lives!
!......what is he "trying" to prove?
and for god's sakes,(pun intended)how long is this gonna take???.

Well I'll be damned, 177,000 years?! Now that's a twist. I like the one that Jehovah killed Jesus. Why even Isaiah says it if you believe the prophetic interpretation. You know, where Isaiah says that "Jehovah took delight in crushing him, he made him sick"? Jehovah, if he exists has a lot of crap to answer for.

Welcome from Queens New York City. Glad to hear your mate is so liberal. That's kind of how my ex is, which helps with our daughter.
